Sole Gardener - A600

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a qualified, skilled and experienced Sole Gardener to take ownership of one of Yorkshire’s stunning stately homes. This position is offered as a live-in or live-out, with a generous salary to reflect your preferred option.

Set in a wider 2000 acres of the Yorkshire countryside, a picturesque 250 acres of parkland houses one of Yorkshire’s largest and most majestic estate buildings.  Rare breed free-range livestock roam the park outside the main estate gardens; themselves a key backdrop for the many weddings and events held at the venue each year.  A new vineyard is enclosed by a 1.7 acre walled garden with raised beds and livestock providing produce for the established cooking school on site.  Immaculate box hedging provides the centre point to a formal lawn located adjacent to the beautiful yet imposing main residence.  The existing site is stunning by any measure, yet future plans at the estate in which you will play a key role, is perhaps the most attractive aspect of this rare position offering.

The ideal candidate will share the drive and enthusiasm of the estate owner, and will see potential in terms of the quality and variety of the planned service offerings.  The Sole Gardener will be responsible for basic management of the newly-planted vineyard, established gardens, and will be confident in giving tours of the gardens to visitors when required.  You will not be required to have an in-depth knowledge of viticulture, but rather an awareness and enthusiasm for the developing estate gardens and associated services. A genuine opportunity to grow with the estate is offered with regard to future responsibilities in line with the overall vision.

Applicants should possess an academic horticultural qualification, good horticultural knowledge and extensive demonstrable experience.  Experience in the growing and management of cut flowers, roses, vegetables and fruit is required, as is a basic understanding of associated pest and disease management.  Applicants should be physically fit with the ability and willingness to undertake planting and pruning, and the operation and basic maintenance of a range of garden machinery.  Experience with plant propagation and glasshouses is desired, as is an ability to produce cut flowers for display in the main house.  Additional rose beds and espalier-trained fruit trees are planned, so experience in these areas would be beneficial.  As some chainsaw and spray work will be required in specific areas of the estate, appropriate certification is desired (PA1/PA6 and CS30/CS31).  A positive attitude and good sense of humour is essential, as is the desire to become a key player in the development of this stunning and unique family-owned estate.
