An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join the garden and grounds of a beautiful residential property located near Flitwick in Bedfordshire. The owner requires a skilled gardener to manage the ongoing maintenance of the gardens and grounds.

The estate is a total of 72 acres, which is a mixture of farmland, pastures, parkland and formal garden. The gardens surround the principal dwelling, with a lawned area to the front elevation, either side of the driveway and to the rear, leading out to an area of parkland of about 37 acres. To the side of the house is a further lawn with a water feature with paved walkway and herbaceous borders together with a sunken pond with landscaped banks and mature trees. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the parkland and about a 5-acre formal garden which includes lawns, formal bed planting, water features including two large ponds, extensive hedging, planted pots and containers. The formal gardens are enclosed predominantly by parkland fencing.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for maintaining the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with several years’ experience working in a similar role. Excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position. General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, planting, weeding, mowing, strimming, and edging.

Our client is looking for someone with a proactive approach, who can offer suggestions for the management and improvement of the gardens and parklands and who can work independently to bring these improvements to fruition. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

Applicants should have a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery is required as well as a full driving licence to the rural location of the property. PA1 and PA6 spraying, and chainsaw certification are a requirement for this position or the willingness to acquire the tickets for the role.

The hours of work for this position are 8:00am-4.30pm, Monday-Friday with a coffee break 10:00-10:30am, and lunch break 1pm-1:30pm. Please note, the successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check.

Main Responsibilities

This is an exciting position and would suit an experienced gardener who has the ability to make a lasting impact for the gardens and their visitors. The wonderful gardens are roughly 5-acres in size and feature formal lawns, 2 large natural ponds full of wildlife, extensive hedges, and a large paddock. A selection of shrubs and grasses as well as a collection of mature trees. To the front of the house is a stunning courtyard surrounded by raised beds containing a variety of geraniums. The property is a fairly new build, that my client has owned for roughly 2 years. My client’s main residency is at another property located in Jersey, spending roughly 4 months of the year in Surrey.

Our client seeks a skilled Gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants should ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with several years’ experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in propagation. General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, planting, weeding, mowing, strimming, and edging. The owner is a keen gardener, and where they can, get stuck in with the garden; they are open to ideas the Gardener will have with regards to the development of the gardens.

In addition to gardening responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to be fully competent in maintenance and groundsman activities, which include but are not limited to, power washing the paths and driveway, monitoring irrigation, leaf blowing, raking, digging, and managing compost. Sole Gardener

An experienced Sole Gardener is sought to manage a stunning private estate which is located approximately a mile from the north Norfolk coast. The appointed gardener will be responsible for 5 acres of mature gardens which form part of the overall 25-acre estate.

The gardens, which are surrounded by woodlands and fields, predominantly consist of herbaceous borders, a wildflower meadow, formal lawns along with a kitchen garden with raised beds and a greenhouse. As such, the gardener will be responsible for the upkeep of the aforementioned garden features in addition to the driveways and paved areas. Tasks include but are not limited to seasonal pruning, weeding, hedge trimming, maintenance of equipment and additional handyman/groundsperson responsibilities when required. The successful candidate will receive the assistance of external contractors during the busy summer period and therefore, their supervision and direction will fall under the remit of the Sole Gardener.

Applicants will need to have a relevant horticultural qualification and proven gardening experience in a similar role. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive knowledge of plants and capability to manage a garden of this size. Previous experience and competency with a wide range of gardening machinery is a requirement for this position, with chainsaw certification being advantageous. Applicants must also be well organised, capable of working using their own initiative and fit and healthy - you should have a friendly disposition and be happy to fit in with the family but mainly be independent.
