An exciting Head Gardener role has become available to take responsibility for a historically renowned landscape set within a diversified rural estate in southwest Scotland. The gardens are open to the public for 7 months of the year and home to a wide collection of mature tree specimens and diverse range of Rhododendron species. The remarkable micro-climate of the area means that many exotic plants can grow and flourish. These important historic gardens are located on an isthmus, covering an area of 75 acres. Landscape features include sculpted landforms, tree lined avenues, Rhododendron collection, round pond, champion trees and variety of rare species. Formal areas include an ornamental walled garden with herbaceous planting, mixed perennial planting, and formal lawns.
The successful applicant will be responsible for planning, overseeing, and implementing the seasonal operations throughout the gardens. Managing an existing small team of committed gardeners with the intention of growing the team by recruiting additional team members and the implementation of a volunteer programme. An awareness of good health and safety practices is essential, as the successful applicant will be responsible for compliance with Estate Health and Safety Policy for all gardening staff and contractors. Moving forward the gardens will require someone to be invested in the development and improvement of the landscape, key responsibilities moving forward will include management of the tree and plant collections, identifying, labelling, and recording the historic collection. The successful applicant will work closely with the owners to design and implement planting plans and displays for all areas of the gardens, particularly utilising the unique microclimate.
Applicants must have previous Head Gardener experience, extensive plant knowledge, strong staff management skills and the passion and drive to develop and promote a diverse plant collection within a historic landscape. Applicants must have clear and demonstratable experience as Head Gardener, excellent attention to detail and a positive, enthusiastic attitude towards their work and colleagues. At least six seasons experience of garden management is essential along with a detailed knowledge and experience of plants and good hands-on gardening skills. Job Description:
The role of Nursery Manager would involve reporting to the Executive Chairman to ensure the continuation of growing top quality nursery stock. Developing, motivating and training your team, and ensuring a safe working environment.
Main Duties Include:
- Effectively managing growing teams, systems, and resources to produce crops of optimal quality at the right time, by specifying, monitoring, and giving technical guidance
- Carrying out regular crop walks to identify cultural requirements and monitor pest and disease, as well as leading the walks for the buying department
- Recruiting team colleagues as required to meet seasonal peaks, as well as staff training, conducting performance reviews and disciplinaries as required.
- Ensuring all growing environments are effectively controlled and crops manipulated to ensure sales timings and targets are achieved, and waste percentages reduced
- Work with the buying team to look at new crop opportunities, as well as ensuring stock control systems are kept up to date, including quarterly stock takes
- Continually improving the efficiency of the growing processes and labour efficiency
- Liaising with internal departments to ensure facilities and equipment are in good working order, and pests and diseases are identified and dealt with at the earliest opportunity
- Using horticultural production software to input data and reference production plans
- Overseeing weekly programme of plant maintenance is in place at all times to ensure preventative crop protection and crop management are in place for the best quality plants for the garden centre market at their seasonal peak.
- Work with the Head of Estates to ensure all areas of nursery operations remain a safe place to work, adhering to all health and safety measures, completing the required training, risk assessments and any accident information where necessary.
- Participating in the weekend duty rota
- Line managing staff, taking responsibility for yearly appraisals, training needs and disciplinary matters
Candidates must have a number of years growing experience, and will preferably hold a qualification in commercial Horticulture, however this is desirable and not essential. With experience growing a wide range of quality, garden centre standard, stock; from bedding to hardy nursery stock.
- Must be IT literate in Office, and hold a strong working knowledge of Excel
- Strong leadership skills with the capacity to listen and respond
- Proven coaching skills, with the ability to give constructive feedback
- Hold a good working knowledge of irrigation and sand filter systems, modern potting machines
- Candidates must hold their PA1&PA6 spraying certificates
Standard working week for this role is 39.5 hours, with flexible working options – peak seasonal hours with some weekend working and reduced off season hours.

An attractive opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener on a beautiful private estate in much sought-after location 7 miles from Hereford. The position would suit an experienced and skilled gardener with an active interest in biodiversity.
The stunning 17th century grade II listed building is surrounded by an interesting and diverse garden containing a Venetian Garden, Mediterranean garden, rose garden, walled garden modelled on an alpine garden with lawns, borders, flower beds and rose bushes. The formal gardens are about 3 acres including a vegetable plot, large and small greenhouse and a fruit cage that will need tending to by the successful applicant, as will climbing wisteria on the walls of the main house. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for reinstating but also shaping the future of the garden. They will have initiative and a creative eye to contribute new ideas to improve and develop the gardens and estate e.g. irrigation, pollarding, hedging. The successful candidate will take ownership and great pride in their work delivering beautiful results.
Applicants should have experience of the above, be confident and skilled in pruning methods, i.e., of wisteria and roses, and be physically fit with good horticultural knowledge and plant identification skills. Excellent knowledge of lawn maintenance, shrubs and herbaceous plants is important. Candidates will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification e.g. RHS level 2 or similar, previous experience delivering maintenance for a high quality garden. As the position is singlehanded, discipline, time management and organisation are essential. As is the ability to work alone and within a wider team and supervise and manage outside contractors e.g. tree surgeons.
Applicants will ideally hold spray tickets (PA1/PA6) however training can be provided as long as there is the willingness to acquire. A full driving licence may be useful as the property is located in a small village.

Job Brief
With a high demand for our client’s services, a Senior Gardener is required. He / She will work with one other colleague; take full responsibility of a van and tools and lead the decision-making process on what needs doing with each gardening maintenance visit. As a Senior and professional Gardener, you will be hands-on and knowledgeable in all areas of gardening and experienced in leading a small team. The successful candidate will have a professional approach in all dealings with the client and whilst on their property. He / She will demonstrate the ability to prioritise and problem solve when required to be cost and time effective. Attention to detail is really important in all aspects of the job.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible to train and develop their team to produce the best results.
- Guide and support team members to ensure that jobs are completed as per quote within the allotted timescale and with 100% customer satisfaction.
- Ensuring health and safety is adhered to at all times, and a safe working practice is undertaken
- Daily cleaning and inspection of equipment and ensuring that the team respect all tools, equipment and machinery including the van and treat it as their own
Candidate Skills
Applicants will have a proven record of professionally maintaining gardens to a high standard, skills must include mowing, weeding, lawn care, seasonal pruning, topiary work and hedge cutting. Good general plant knowledge on trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and weed identification is a requirement. He / She will be good at working towards deadlines, be able to identify, plan and action short and long-term improvements to the gardens in their care, have a high attention to detail and have effective and respectful communication skills with other members of the team, the public and clients. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, physically fit and enjoy working in all weathers. A good knowledge of Health and Safety with respects to gardening and landscaping.
The ideal candidate will hold:
- A full clean UK manual driving licence held for 2 years + (required).
- Several years’ experience working within a similar environment
- Experience using a range of machinery
- Good horticultural knowledge
- A good understanding of pests and diseases and their treatment
PA1/PA6a, NVQ are desirable, but not essential
Each morning, the day will start at 7:15am meeting on site in Fulham and the van will be ready for leaving the unit by 7:30am ready to begin work at 8am with a finish time of 5pm (season allowing).
The position is Monday to Friday, 45 hours per week. Overtime is available during the summer months.
