An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Gardener to join the existing small team on a stunning private estate in Turville Heath, Henley-on-Thames. The position would suit an experienced and qualified gardener with demonstrable experience on private estates.
The traditional English country garden consists of several formal gardens covering 5 to 6 acres, located within a wider 56 acres in Henley-on-Thames. The successful applicant will join the existing team in the upkeep of the formal, walled, sunken and kitchen gardens, cut flowers, soft fruits and large greenhouse. Applicants must be physically fit and confident in the operation of a range of garden machinery.
Candidates should have experience in each of the above areas of horticulture and be dedicated gardeners with the willingness to undertake additional garden estate duties if required. Such duties may include operation of the irrigation system, general soft landscaping and the provision of assistance to the live-in maintenance person, e.g. setting up garden furniture prior to events.
Applicants should be confident and skilled in pruning methods, i.e. of wisteria and roses, and have good horticultural knowledge and plant identification skills. The ideal candidate will possess a recognised academic horticultural qualification and well-rounded experience in a similar hands-on role.
Candidates should hold a full driving licence, your own transport for commuting to and from site and ideally spray tickets (PA1/PA6). A chainsaw licence would also be beneficial. The role would suit someone who is hard-working, flexible, with a positive attitude and an ability to follow instructions from a Head Gardener. The property owners are involved in the ongoing development of the garden, so you must be presentable, have excellent attention to detail, and a genuine enthusiasm for gardening.

An enthusiastic and passionate Sole Gardener is required to maintain and further develop a small Estate of approximately 20 acres. This includes a number of fields grazed by sheep, long tree lined drive, wooded areas, hedging, and 3acres of formal gardens around the house, including lawns, box and yew hedging, mixed borders, potager, fruit trees, wild flowers and a pond. The owners have developed the gardens over the last 6 years and now seek a full time Sole Gardener bring the gardens and grounds up to their full potential.
Applicants must be experienced and knowledgeable gardeners, ideally with a recognised horticultural qualification and previous experience working in a similar role as Sole Gardener on a private estate. A good knowledge of plants and a broad range of technical skills will be required as well as a desire and ability to work to a high standard.
It is important that applicants are enthusiastic and self-motivated and able to work on their own initiative. Applicants should have a range of practical skills and be able to turn their hands to a number of jobs, such as managing the grassland and woodland and keeping the barn and fencing in good order. A proportion of the job will involve working as a Sole Gardener at times.
Applicants must be very experienced and skilled Senior or Head Gardeners with a demonstrable ability to manage Under Gardeners in a private estate setting. Applicants should hold a level 3 horticultural qualification or higher as well as experience of kitchen gardens, cut flowers, greenhouse and propagation work. Spray certificates (PA1/6) are desired.
