Main Responsibilities

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, RHS Level 1, 2 or 3, HND, OND, City & Guilds.
  • At least three years relevant experience in horticulture together with 1 year’s proven supervisory experience, together with comprehensive plant knowledge.

A sole gardener is sought for an exciting role on this newly developing project in Cheshire. The site consists of approximately four acres of gardens surrounding the main house, and includes parterres, pools, terraces, wisteria walks, greenhouse/kitchen gardens, and herbaceous borders. The wider grounds include mixed native and specimen woods, wildflower meadows and the historic ‘Ladies Walk’ with pools and waterfalls.

Duties will include care of the gardens; ensuring the gardens and grounds are presented to a high standard at all times. Working with the designer to continue developing the gardens and grounds. Propagation. Control of pests, diseases and plant health. Maintenance and mowing of lawns. Keeping pathways and driveways weed free. Care and basic maintenance of garden machinery and tools, As Sole Gardener, there will occasionally be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out, which will include ad hoc caretaking and house plant care.

Applicants should ideally have 3 years’ experience in horticulture, a minimum level 2 RHS qualification, PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates and a full driving license. Chainsaw certification would be advantageous but not essential. However, we are open to hearing from all levels of experience; and would welcome a candidate with less than 3 years’ experience, should you be willing to learn and grow with the role. The role requires a self-motivated individual happy to work alone. An enhanced DBS will be required. A 40-hour week is offered on a permanent basis, with a generous salary for the ideal candidate.

Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a live in Sole Gardener to join the garden of a 16th century Grade II* listed private property located near Ludlow, Shropshire. The owners now require an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large, high-end garden, to assist with the ongoing maintenance and future development of the garden and grounds to a continued high standard. This is a full-time permanent position.

Boasting magnificent views, the gardens are roughly 11-acres in size, with elements including formal lawns, herbaceous borders, perennial beds, small pond, organic vegetable garden, greenhouse, a small woodland and orchard. The gardens are currently under construction with a swimming pool and gym in the process of being built, with completion estimated for 2025. After completion there will be extensive work carried out within the garden, with the client bringing in a Chelsea multi-award winner to create bespoke new areas. The Sole Gardener will be directly involved with the implementation of the scheme and with its development and maintenance thereafter.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with at least 3 years’ experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards, are qualities which are essential for this role. The individual should be an excellent communicator and have a good sense of humour. Working closely with the Estate Manager, there will be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out within the estate therefore candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General gardening duties will include but are not limited to fine lawn care, pruning, propagating, kitchen gardening, weeding, hoeing, clearing, topiary management, edging and hedge cutting. The Sole Gardener will also be responsible for seasonal planting and providing cut flowers for the main house. Also on site are 2 beehives of which the Sole Gardener will maintain and manage, with training provided if the successful candidate does not have experience with bees. The owners are passionate about their garden and want to keep them to an immaculate standard. Experience in the use of and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery including tractors, as well as a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. 

A 2-bedroom coach house on site, is available to the successful candidate. Council tax and utility bills are covered by the employer, with partners, dependants and pets welcome; dogs must be well behaved and socialise well with other dogs. The owners divide their time between properties and as this is a live in role the Sole Gardener will share security responsibilities with other staff on site. Candidates will need to hold a full driver’s licence due to the location of the property.

Working hours for this role are 8am – 5pm Sunday to Thursday, or Tuesday to Saturday; with annual leave bring 20 days plus Bank Holidays.

Skilled Gardener

An excellent opportunity for a Skilled Gardener has arisen on an historic private estate in Cambridgeshire.  This role would suit an academically qualified and experienced gardener with a demonstrable background on private estates.  A generous salary is offered in addition to a cottage on site, if required.

At almost 500 years old, the Grade 2 Parkland estate exudes character and plays host to several archaeological features throughout its several hundred acres of land.  A one-acre walled garden is divided into six compartments and includes a parterre, a rose garden and ornamental planting.  The expansive grounds include lawns and a Ha-ha, a lake, mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, hedging, a sculpture garden, glasshouse (hot and cold), terraces and a ½ acre kitchen garden.  Native and specimen trees provide structure and depth to the property, as well as some privacy. 

The welcoming property owners help in the garden in certain areas and are knowledgeable gardeners themselves.  The estate currently benefits from a team of two part-time contract gardeners, with assistance in general maintenance also being on hand.  The need for a full-time Skilled Gardener has arisen, with the candidate to be employed on a full-time permanent basis and to play a key role in the ongoing development and enhancement of the gardens.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5-years’ experience on private estate gardens and with an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 2 or above/similar being advantageous.  Strong plant knowledge and species-specific pruning skills are essential, as is good physical fitness and a willingness to help on the estate wherever necessary. This is a horticulturally focussed role, with enthusiasm and dedication required alongside a positive attitude and a desire to work with the owners and employees in maintaining a positive, happy environment.  Experience in kitchen gardening, rose pruning, bed/border management and the safe operation of a range of garden machinery is required.  Applicants must be happy to carry out the physically demanding aspects of the role, such as hedge cutting, as well as the finer aspects such as plant propagation and glasshouse work.

Accommodation on site is offered by way of a cottage 3-bedroom cottage. All applicants must hold a full driving licence and their own transport as the property is located rurally with no public transport available in the vicinity.

Pashley Manor Gardens is a privately owned 11-acre garden with woodlands on the East Sussex/Kent border – open to visitors seasonally from April to September, with several garden based special events organised throughout the open season – we are most well-known for our Tulip Festival, Rose Week and Dahlia event.

To keep these gardens at their best, and develop them for the future, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Gardener to join the garden team.

Applicants should have practical horticultural experience, preferably in amenity horticulture (appropriate qualifications at RHS level 2/3 or equivalent desirable but not necessary if there is sufficient practical experience).

You’ll have a passion for gardening and deliver excellent standards of garden maintenance and presentation over the whole garden.  Genuine enthusiasm, keen eye for detail and appreciation of quality, pro-active approach and ability to work calmly under pressure are essential.

This is a hands-on role so applicants must have a good level of fitness and be able and willing to work outside throughout the year.

As a garden open to the public there is also a focus on providing a great experience for our visitors – which will involve answering questions in the garden, developing an understanding of the garden’s history and using it to encourage our visitor’s interest in the garden.

This can be a full-time or part-time position – either way we’ll need you to help with special events that are happening – including at weekends/bank holidays (time off in lieu for extra time worked).  This role may require weekend working on a rota basis and willingness to be one of our first aiders (training can be given).

What you’ll be doing:

  • Seasonal maintenance of flowers, shrubs, walled gardens, woodland gardens and pots, including trees, hedges, shrubs, roses, climbers, herbaceous plants, fruits and vegetables and annuals.
  • Propagation and plant production and maintenance under glass.
  • Formative, seasonal and rejuvenative pruning of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, climbers and hedges.
  • Use of garden machinery as necessary including mowers, strimmers, tractor and trailers, scarifiers and other machinery and hired plant.

Certificate in chainsaw competency desirable.

  • Mowing and edging.
  • Watering and organising watering/best use of water supply.
  • Helping to care for and re-stock plants for our plant sales area.
  • The appropriate, timely and safe use of pesticides.

PA1 and PA6a spraying certificates desirable.

  • Optimum use of composting systems.
  • Maintenance of paths, gates, pools, ponds, fencing and other hard landscaping features.
  • Ensure efficient, cost-effective use of resources ensure garden machinery and equipment is properly maintained and stored
  • Understand and encourage wildlife diversity in order to give our fauna the best care possible.
  • Assist with the accurate recording and labelling of the plant collection – particularly tulips, roses and dahlias.
  • Willingness to pass on your craft gardening skills to the whole garden team.
  • Being familiar with the majority of plants within the garden.
  • Carrying out tasks related to the garden being open to the public – e.g. placing and maintaining signs, helping organise sculpture placement and cleaning, furniture placement/cleaning on the terrace etc. etc.
  • Assist with horticultural/hard landscaping works as required.
  • Awareness of health and safety for yourself, the garden team and our visitors.
