Senior Gardener
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Gardener to manage the gardens of a beautiful 15 -acre private estate based in the countryside in North Norfolk, on a full time and permanent basis.
The garden includes a 0.3-acre kitchen garden and a 1-acre orchards so applicants should have previous experience with pruning and training top and soft fruits. The estate also includes around 0.5 acre of formal gardens, which includes a rose garden, herbaceous boarders, shrubs, lawns, hedges and topiary. There is also a polytunnel for propagating. The owners have a building programme which will create new glasshouses and develop further growing areas within the grounds.
A significant portion of the duties will include propagating and growing vegetables through the year in the kitchen garden. Equally important duties include pruning fruit trees, managing espalier and fan trained trees and managing soft fruits. Additionally, the owners are creating new herbaceous borders and the successful candidate will play a key role in shaping these and maintaining them.
The successful candidate will join another part-time gardener. The owners are looking for candidates with horticultural experience, enthusiasm and a passion for kitchen and fruit gardening. The candidate will need to be dynamic, knowledgeable and able to work on their own initiative. The candidate is likely to have qualifications at RHS level 2 (or equivalent) but this is not essential. More important is the applicant’s passion for gardening and learning together with a strong estate gardening background. The gardens are almost entirely organic and biodynamic - no pesticides or herbicides have been used on the land for many years. The main front driveway is occasionally treated so a PA1/6 certification may be helpful (but is not essential). Experience with livestock would be helpful, but again not essential.
