Job Description

Delivery of contracts in line with safety requirements, on time, budget and in conformance to specification and to the client’s satisfaction.

Take responsibility for on-site work & liaise closely with the contract manager to deliver landscape projects.

  • Manage all contracts efficiently to ensure delivery on time and to specification whilst achieving at least the tendered margins
  • Strong operational experience, particularly of hard landscape construction, being able to confidentially lead on construction matters.
  • A good understanding of health & safety Lead the team to ensure that they deliver the contracted specification within the set timescales
  • Ensure all required resources, vehicles, machinery and materials are on site by working closely with the responsible contract manager for the project
  • Responsible for onsite health and safety
  • Provide clear instructions and taking the initiative with the on-site team to push forward the job in line with programme
  • Accurate recording of times and materials used on site
  • Deliver all works to a high quality
  • Liaising with client/customers in a courteous and professional manner
  • Delivery of all operational responsibilities in line with the company's policy and procedures
Key Skills:

Highly experienced Landscape Foreman ideally having worked within a landscape construction environment

  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • A good understanding of hard and soft landscape construction
  • Ideally hold CSCS and plant operator tickets such as NPORS/LANTRA/CPCS (but if not training will be provided)
  • Experienced in managing & motivating teams on site
General:

This is a hands-on position working with a team of 2 to 4 employees at any one time. The company works in a close geographical area travelling no more than 90 minutes and usually under 60 minutes.

This role entails being the representative of the company on the ground and will need to conduct yourself that portrays the business in accordance with its values and approach at all times.

This is also a route for someone who is ambitious to join a progressive company and develop into a role with more seniority.

A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced individual to develop a large market garden on a sizeable estate in Maidstone, Kent.

Currently the market garden occupies 10 acres and it is likely that this would be expanded in the future. The garden comprises of apple, pear, plum and cherry orchards chosen for flavour not yield. A dozen varieties of strawberries and raspberries are grown mainly of rare heritage varieties. The glass houses are derelict and will require replacement.

The mission is to grow the very finest varieties of the very finest fruits, vegetables and herbs. These may be traditional or non-traditional. The estate is associated with an artisanal food business so that although this is not a commercial enterprise the produce would be supplied to the business as well as to the family. For this reason, knowledge of prevailing rules and regulations is vital.

The project will include the reinstatement of the glasshouses and a full landscaping program. It is envisaged that the landscaping element would be a joint project with the estate head gardener. The role will require a Market gardener of exceptional knowledge and experience in succession planting, cultivation of vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers and micro herbs. He / she will be capable of building a team with the aim of creating a market garden of scale, productivity, diversity and beauty using the most effective sustainable methods. The position is autonomous but would require cooperation with the estate head gardener.

Applicants for this role must have extensive horticultural knowledge in terms of market/kitchen garden management and the continuous supply of high-quality produce.  Clear and regular communication with the owners will be required throughout the development of the garden and to supply the required fruit and vegetables. A good working knowledge of propagation, organic pest and disease management and good plant husbandry is essential. As well as good understanding of Health and safety legislation is also required.

This exciting position will suit an applicant of great knowledge and enthusiasm who has the desire and ambition to create a garden of rare distinction growing superior produce. Great technical skill is a must as is a high level of organisational skill. A two- or three-bedroom cottage could be provided for the successful applicant if they require and salary would be adjusted accordingly.

Their portfolio of contracts range from small domestic gardens to large commercial estates and university grounds. This gives candidates an opportunity to experience a variety of work and client interfaces. Key points

Plant knowledge is an essential part of the role, along with a keen eye for detail and precision. Proven experience in all aspects of grounds maintenance and a good understanding of safe working practices is essential. Experience using garden maintenance machinery and tools e.g. pedestrian mowers; strimmers; leaf blowers etc. is required. 

Work hours are a minimum of 40 hrs a week Monday-Friday. Candidates must be flexible to work additional hours if required, and willing to work across a number of sites and in all weather conditions. Reliability and punctuality must be maintained at all times. The company vans are stocked with quality tools and are provided as part of the role. Initially you will be working under an experienced team leader to familiarise yourself with the sites and client requirements.

Must haves

Candidates will have good horticultural knowledge and practical ability. Essential skills will include:

  • Good knowledge of horticultural maintenance techniques
  • Excellent customer liaison skills
  • Practical skills using garden maintenance machinery and tools
  • Full UK driving licence preferred but not essential

An RHS Level 2 in Horticulture or similar is highly desirable for this role. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in both commercial and domestic environments.

PA1/PA6 and LANTRA/NPTC certificates in any other relevant machinery and equipment use will further strengthen a candidate’s application.

As part of our Landscape Team you will work both independently and as part of the team in surveying all 28,000 trees that WDH manage to determine their current health, condition and of any maintenance work that is required. The role may also require you to respond to emergency situations on our estates which will include work out of normal office hours as required.
