Skilled Gardener - Live Out - EC7688

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to work alongside, and provide guidance to, an existing small team on a beautiful private estate in Hertfordshire.  The impressive period property is framed by gardens designed by a highly respected Chelsea Gold Medal winning designer.

The new Skilled Gardener, along with the team, will liaise with the Head Gardener on a regular basis and impart their horticultural knowledge to the team from a hands-on perspective.

The privately-owned estate encompasses approximately 40-acres, of which five are gardens maintained to a very high standard. The gardens are open once a year at the end of May as part of the NGS scheme, and as testament to their popularity, have broken the regional record for the most successful turnout in a day. The varied site includes a ¾ acre walled garden containing ornamental borders, fruit trees, bushes and beds dedicated to vegetable production, and a 4 ¼ acre ornamental garden with water features, trees, shrubs, perennials borders, rose parterre, formal hedging and many other elements.  Glasshouses on site are used for propagation, growing vegetables, overwintering citrus and a few ornamentals.  The remainder of the estate encompasses paddocks/ménage, a tennis court, swimming pool and parkland.

The garden team are noted for their small but much-praised production of fruit and vegetables, of which some are used for home-made preserves and juices. The estate also provides a home for various animals; a small herd of Dexter cattle, Texel sheep, chickens and horses.

A vacancy has arisen for a Skilled Gardener with a particular passion and skill for productive kitchen gardening.  Applications are sought from experienced private estate gardeners who have excellent experience and understanding of ornamental and productive horticulture, seasonal garden management, a great work ethic and communication skills and a positive, friendly character.  Skill in seasonal fruit and vegetable propagation, care and harvesting are required as the Skilled Gardener will be, alongside the Head Gardener, responsible for the management of the productive side of the garden.

Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is necessary, as is the ability to provide guidance to colleagues with diplomacy and a positive attitude.  Chemical spray certificate and chainsaw licenses are both desirable, but not essential.  A full driving license and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is situated in a rural location.

Sole Gardener - Live In - EC7646 - This position has now been filled

A unique opportunity has arisen on a beautiful private estate near Winchester, for a hands-on Sole Gardener with a talent for creative plant use, to help complete the re-establishment of a garden.  This is a live-in position with a two-bedroom cottage offered to the successful candidate.  The position is also open to couples, as a vacancy for a housekeeper exists in addition to that of a Sole Gardener, however this opportunity is not open exclusively to couples so experienced gardeners are encouraged to submit an application, independent of the client’s requirement for a Housekeeper.

The property itself is surrounded by expansive views and is set within 112 acres of land (used primarily for livestock and managed by a neighbouring farmer) in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, approximately 8-miles east of the historic city of Winchester.  Due to recently completed development work on the site, the 3-4-acre garden offers huge potential but is currently in a condition that requires your creative input in conjunction with the owners’ ideas.

Newly established garden features include a Ha-ha, terraced lawns, York stone paving, yew hedging, a roomed and walled rose garden with climbers (yet to be planted), and an Orangery/garden room.  Existing areas include maturing trees, long grass with mown paths, orchids, ornamental grasses and wildflowers.  Plans to plant an orchard are being discussed, so the successful applicant would be involved with this from the start of their employment.  There are no plans at present to create a kitchen garden, but the owners are open to the idea if the successful applicant has a passion for this aspect of horticulture.  An existing swimming pool will require basic maintenance and is to be surrounded with new planting.  This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and flexible gardener with good physical fitness and plant knowledge, to play a leading role in the development of a low maintenance, yet beautiful garden.

The ideal candidate will hold spray and chainsaw certification and demonstrable gardening experience on private estates and/or horticulturally diverse gardens. Academic horticultural qualifications are desired but are not essential if considerable gardening experience can be demonstrated.  The ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery is essential, as is possession of a full UK driving licence.  Basic Arboricultural knowledge will be of benefit to ensure successful development and care of young trees.

In addition to gardening duties, the new Sole Gardener should be willing to undertake general estate management tasks; basic swimming pool maintenance, general handyman duties and occasional walking/feeding of the 18-month-old black Labrador when the owners are away (typically a couple of nights per week and when on holiday).  General indoor/outdoor tasks will fall to the Sole Gardener or Housekeeper respectively, with the latter being responsible for security of the house (and shared care of the dog), for example.

A Housekeeper is required to fulfil duties such as cleaning, washing, ironing, occasional cooking and helping with entertaining/dinner parties.  The property owners have three grown children who visit at weekends and holidays.  The housekeeper will be required to liaise with the Sole Gardener about certain aspects of the property.  It is essential that the Housekeeper possesses a full UK driving licence and their own car.  The position requires commitment of approximately 25hrs/week and is offered with on-site accommodation in addition to the stated salary.   Flexibility on accommodation is available as two vacant cottages are present on site; one for the Sole Gardener and one for the Housekeeper if these positions are not held by a couple.

As stated above, this opportunity is not exclusively open to couples.  Experienced gardeners are encouraged to apply, independent of the client’s requirement for a Housekeeper.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside the owners to collaborate on the design and ongoing development of the garden.  Each of the above vacancies are full-time permanent roles and are available for immediate start, allowing for notice periods of the successful candidate(s)
