Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity for a skilled Sole Gardener has arisen on a beautifully established private garden in North Wiltshire, located approximately 10 minutes’ drive from near Hungerford.

The property is positioned in a stunning 10-acre well-manicured garden, on a large in hand farming estate surrounded by expansive views of fields and native woodlands. Structurally re-designed in 2011, the formal garden consists of ornamental parterres, lawns with shrub beds and borders, azaleas and rhododendron borders, an ornamental lake and fountain.  There is also a walled garden with herbaceous borders, a large Alitex greenhouse and mature trees. Areas of hard landscaping have been established to make the management of the grounds as easy as possible.

The ideal candidate will have clear enthusiasm for maintaining and enhancing the garden and will be someone who takes pride in their work. He/she will be responsible for the onward development of the borders in conjunction with the owners and will maintain the garden to a high standard. The successful candidate will be organised, able to plan and prioritise the workload and must be prepared to work outside in all weathers.  Good timekeeping is essential for this role to ensure the harmonious and smooth running of the estate.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants and be fully conversant with planting methods, soil properties, pest control, pruning and cultivation.  Trees are a major part of the landscape; therefore, a chainsaw certificate is essential for the role; however, if the applicant is willing to acquire the certification, training can be arranged by the employer.  A spraying certificate (PA1 and PA6) is required.  A full clean driving licence is essential for the role as some driving duties may be expected.

Additional duties will include basic maintenance such as painting and repairs, therefore previous experience in the estate maintenance aspect of a Sole Gardening role would be beneficial.  Applicants should be trustworthy and when the owners are travelling, will collaborate with the house sitter for the security of the property.  He/she must be dog friendly and willing to walk the owner’s Labrador if/when necessary.  The successful applicant will be entitled to 28-days holiday including bank holidays.
