Job Description:
Day to day
  • Watering, pruning, weeding and treating plant stock for pests and disease
  • Putting plants into pots and trays, ready to sell
  • Setting out displays of plants
  • Using a wheelbarrow or trolley to move heavy items such as trees or bags of soil
  • Helping to carry and load heavy items to customers’ cars
  • Operating the till at the checkout, taking cash and card payments
  • Pricing stock and filling the benches
  • Organising new stock from the nursery
  • Advising customers on plant choice and care
Key Skills:
  • Good horticultural knowledge of different types of plant, including where they grow best and how to care for them
  • to enjoy working with plants
  • good customer service and retail skills, selling products and services to clients including garden centres.
  • good verbal communication skills
  • physical skills such as mobility and co-ordination
  • to work outside in all types of weather
  • to follow health and safety rules and wear protective clothing like gloves and boots for some jobs.

Average 40 hours per week. This role will require weekend and bank holiday working, and hours will vary depending on the season.

Working Environment

You will spend time working outdoors at the centre contributing to deliveries, and movement and care of stock in all weathers. You may also spend time inside the centre’s shop or taking payments for sales from customers at cash desks.

Junior Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Gardener to join the mature garden of an 18th-century private estate located near Pewsey, Wiltshire. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a genuine passion for working outdoors and a keen interest in horticulture. As a Junior Gardener, you will have the chance to learn and develop your skills whilst assisting in the maintenance to enhance a beautiful, mature English country garden. This is a permanent role, based on a 4-day week.

The idyllic 3-acre garden borders the River Avon and features many wonderful elements including formal lawns, a mini moat which runs into a large lily pond, mature trees, a walled garden and lots of pots containing coloured annual plants. Other features include beds and borders with cottage garden favourites such as centranthus, lavender, Alchemilla mollis and peony, with the main building clad in climbing roses and wisteria. The gardens are also host to a productive kitchen garden with fruit cages growing a variety of fruits and vegetables for the main house. The garden is mature and has been professionally maintained therefore the owners are looking for passionate and enthusiastic candidates to help keep the gardens at a high standard.

Some experience within the horticultural sector is essential and it will be important for candidates to demonstrate a commitment to furthering their career in amenity horticulture. As such, it would be advantageous for candidates to show a background in gardening on private estates, volunteering or paid employment.

Under the guidance of the existing Skilled Gardener, the Junior Gardener will be involved with a variety of horticultural practices to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Duties will include but are not limited to, propagation, weeding, preparing & rejuvenating flower beds, planting and pruning as well as all aspects of lawn care. Other duties will include the use of a wide range of garden machinery. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, or be looking to engage in an academic programme to obtain the qualification to assist in furthering your knowledge.

The job is, of necessity outdoors, with the requirement to work in all weathers and is physically demanding. Candidates will be able to communicate well and possess a friendly and helpful personality. A self-motivated, enthusiastic individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work within a small and friendly team and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. The owners are passionate about their garden and want likeminded people to help the gardens continue to flourish. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed.

This role is based on a 4-day week with working hours 8am – 4pm, on a PAYE basis.
