The Role

As part of our gardens team, you will be presented with many opportunities for PD as well as working closely with a team of horticulturalists and industry professionals on a wide range of estate gardening practices. Hedging, habitat and woodland management, planting, meadow management, pruning and water conservation are a few of the topics our gardeners cover, as well as an understanding of IPM controls and irrigation systems.

The successful applicant will be given their own area of responsibility to maintain and develop. They will be expected to work on their own, in small groups and with the whole team on specific projects. They will need to use their initiative to enhance the plants under their care and utilise their skills for the benefit of the gardens and team. With an area of responsibility, each gardener must demonstrate good time management skills in which they can balance the demands of their areas with the ongoing, seasonal team tasks they will be involved in. Working Schedule

As Gardener you will work a 39-hour week, plus regular weekend overtime – one in three weekend mornings. This is a fixed term role. Candidates must be available from February/March through to the end of November.

The Candidate

 

We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is experienced with estate horticulture and who has a high level of professionalism and horticultural knowledge. A specialism with aquatics, roses, exotics or indoor plants is desirable but not essential. An RHS Level 2 or equivalent qualification is required as well as previous practical experience in the industry, however more practical experience would be an advantage.

Previous experience in tractor driving and operating small machinery, as well as a spraying certificate PA1/6 would also be beneficial to any applicant, but not essential.

We offer a substantial and varied schedule of training including but not limited to in-house workshops, webinars, practical machinery training, garden visits and horticultural placements.

Skilled Gardener

An enthusiastic and passionate Skilled Gardener is sought on a full-time permanent basis to care for a beautiful 2-acre garden surrounded by fields of about 30 acres. The garden is maintained to a high standard and has been open to the NGS for 7 years in the past.

The garden consists of herbaceous borders, shrubberies, a pebble garden, a separate blue and white garden, box parterres, yew hedges, lawns (main lawn and 3 smaller ones) and a vegetable garden which is divided into narrow beds by brick paths, with a fruit cage and a heated greenhouse.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the maintenance of the garden to a high horticultural standard as well as enhancing the garden when required. There are a small number of other duties such as looking after a Labrador dog when the owners are away, occasional driving and some security etc.

It is important that applicants are enthusiastic and self-motivated and able to work on their own initiative as well as liaise well with the owners who are knowledgeable and take great pleasure in the garden. Excellent plant knowledge is essential and ideally, candidates should have the ability to use and carry out basic maintenance on a wide range of garden machinery. A driving licence is essential as are spray certificates. A chainsaw certificate is desirable but not essential for the role.

A two-bedroom cottage constructed in 2010 with a small garden adjacent to the main house is available for the successful candidate. Partners and small pets are welcome. Council Tax paid by the employer. The working hours are 40 per week and holiday entitlement is 20 days plus bank holidays.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to join a close estate team on a beautiful private property in Central Dorset, on a full-time basis.

The rural property is situated in a beautiful location, approximately 20-miles from the Dorset coast.  The historic main house is surrounded by formal gardens with parkland, mature trees and managed paddocks beyond.  Within the estate a small team of staff ensure the smooth running of the grounds, of which the successful applicant will play an integral part. The 100-acre estate houses a variety of formal gardens including ornamental bedding, borders and lawns, a glasshouse, walled vegetable garden, a swimming pool, 2 lakes’, an orchard and mature trees throughout.  This position will require applicants to have a good understanding of, and experience in kitchen gardening, as a wide variety of produce is grown for the house on an ongoing basis, along with a comprehensive plant knowledge and the maintenance of to provide the estate with fresh cut flowers.   

The Gardener will play an important role in ensuring the formal gardens are maintained to high standards while working closely alongside the wider team, that include the Head Gardener, a full time Groundsman and a part time colleague.

Suitable applicants for this role will have experience of working within a private estate environment from a hands-on perspective.  Applicants should have good plant identification skills, excellent attention to detail and a methodological approach to their work.  Demonstrable experience in kitchen gardening and plant propagation/glasshouse work is essential, as is competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Spraying qualifications (PA1/PA6), an in-date First Aid certificate, and chainsaw certificate would be desirable, though training can be provided in the areas necessary for otherwise suitable candidates. Applicants must be tidy in their work, presentable, positive in attitude and possess a working understanding of the considerations required of gardeners on private estates.

An exciting opportunity has become available for a hands-on gardener with general handyperson skills, to maintain the gardens and assist on the wider estate of this beautiful private property based near Watton, Norfolk.  This is a live in position, with accommodation provided at a reduced rate in addition to the stated salary. This opportunity would suit an all- rounded gardener with a flexible approach to additional grounds duties as required.

The gardens surrounding the main house are 3 acres in size, featuring diverse areas such as topiary garden, main borders, walled vegetable garden, wood garden and lawns. The successful applicant will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of these areas, therefore ideally having experience and knowledge of pruning, weeding, sowing of seeds, planting, lawncare, hedge cutting and strimming etc. Industry related tickets such as PA1/PA6 spraying, and Chainsaw certificates would be advantageous, however not essential as the owners would be willing to provide additional training as required.

Additional duties and responsibilities include collecting of leaves in winter, collecting eggs and feeding chickens, filling of eco wood boiler, maintenance of swimming pool, feeding and walking the dogs when owners are away (2-gun dogs & 3 terriers) and general basic handyperson skills would be an advantage. A driving licence is essential as occasional driving of owners to and from events/airport may be required.

Applicants will work closely with the owner on the gardening and will be able to take direction where necessary, but also be able to work under their own initiative.  Experience with the use and basic maintenance of garden machinery such as cylinder mowers and ride on mowers is important.
