Role Overview:

We are seeking a PlantArea Supervisor to support the day-to-day operations of both the retail plant area and on-site nursery. This role involves maintaining high standards of plant care and presentation, ensuring stock is well-maintained, healthy, and visually appealing for customers.

The position includes working with plant deliveries and plug stock rather than propagation from seed or cuttings, with responsibilities covering watering, spacing, feeding, and general plant maintenance. The successful candidate will also assist customers with plant advice, support merchandising within the retail area, and help ensure a clean, organised, and efficient working environment across both nursery and shop floor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily maintenance and presentation of the plantArea
  • Water, feed, and care for plant stock to ensure high quality and health
  • Handle, pot, and maintain plug plants (no propagation from seed or cuttings)
  • Receive, check, and organise plant deliveries
  • Ensure plants are correctly labelled, priced, and displayed
  • Provide knowledgeable advice and assistance to customers
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation across the site
  • Support visual merchandising to create attractive plant displays
  • Monitor stock levels and assist with ordering as required
  • Work across both the retail area and nursery as needed
  • Follow health and safety procedures at all times

Skills & Experience Required:

  • Previous experience in a garden centre, nursery, or horticultural environment
  • Good plant knowledge, including care requirements and seasonal varieties
  • Experience handling and maintaining plug plants (desirable)

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Physically fit and able to carry out manual tasks (lifting, moving stock, outdoor work)

Landscape Construction Supervisor

The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden was identified as a special place for a new landscape project where designs and collaborations have been developing since 2011. This year will see an increase in the construction of key landscape features involving earth moving, levelling, service provision and setting foundations in preparation for creating ornamental landscapes including large natural rock installations, water features, paths and tracks. These special places will provide the settings to curate the SBG Living Collection for research and recreation.

A Landscape Construction Supervisor is now needed to assist in the construction of SBG’s hard landscape features. Working with SBG staff, designers, contractors and suppliers you will have opportunities to demonstrate your abilities and experience in site supervision, construction and health and safety. As well as competence in understanding design plans, attending to administration and liaising with all other relative parties you are expected to be hands on accepting responsibility leading to the successful completion of hard landscape features.

This position requires someone who wants to be involved in both overseeing projects and physically participating in building these special assets. Leading by example you will demonstrate problem solving skills, determination and attention to detail and quality. The role requires someone who is capable of proactively supervising each project, recording and reporting on key elements and adjusting schedules and designs as instructed.

The successful candidate should be qualified in a relative subject to HND level with a minimum of 5 years professional experience demonstrating achievement. A driving licence is needed to perform all required duties. This role will allow the right person to create valuable landscape features and to work with a multi-disciplinary team.

The role

Working alongside the Head Gardener and wider team, you’ll help maintain and develop a diverse range of outdoor spaces including woodland, landscaped gardens, flower beds and productive growing areas.

Requirements of the role include;

Leadership:

  • Contribute to monthly and weekly planning of the Garden and Grounds Team work schedule.
  • Work alongside the Head Gardener to support all members of the Garden Team in their tasks, including daily check ins and collaboration.
  • Maintain and develop relevant knowledge and skills that support the teams long term objectives.

Responsibilities:

Work within the Garden Team to maintain a variety of gardens and outdoor areas within the hotel grounds, including woodland, landscaped gardens, flower beds and food production areas.

  • Groundskeeping: Perform regular maintenance tasks such as mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, and planting to maintain the pristine condition of the hotel's woodland and landscaped garden ground.
  • Irrigation and Water Management: Monitor and manage irrigation systems, ensuring proper watering schedules and identifying any repairs or improvements needed to conserve water and maintain healthy vegetation.
  • Pest Control: Implement appropriate pest control measures to protect the grounds from pests and invasive species, including identifying potential threats and taking necessary actions in accordance with eco-friendly practices.
  • Landscape Design: Collaborate with the Garden Team and management to develop and implement planting schemes. Ensure they align with the hotel's aesthetic vision, complement the surrounding environment and sustainability objectives of the Garden Team.
  • Production: Work closely with team members looking after the kitchen garden, gourmet garden and poly-tunnels to aid with the production, care and harvest of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. Contribute to crop and planting plans as required.
  • Tree Care: Conduct regular inspections of trees on the property, identifying and addressing any potential risks, and coordinating with professional arborists for tree maintenance, pruning, and removal when necessary.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee the proper maintenance and repair of groundskeeping equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition, safely stored, and ready for use when needed.
  • Waste Management: Coordinate the proper disposal and recycling of waste materials generated from groundskeeping activities, following environmental regulations and hotel policies.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety guidelines, including the proper handling of equipment and chemicals, to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and team members. Comply with all relevant regulations and protocols related to environmental and sustainability practices.
  • Guest Interaction: Engage with guests in a friendly and professional manner, answering their questions and providing information about the hotel's outdoor spaces when required. Contribute to guest experience tours and workshops as required throughout the year.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with other departments, such as, maintenance staff, and management, to ensure effective communication and coordination for achieving the highest standards of garden and grounds maintenance. Work alongside and support any contractors supporting the Garden Team’s objectives.

As a Maintenance Gardener your responsibilities will include general garden maintenance and development of various private gardens and commercial sites in North/East London/Essex and surrounding areas; creating tidy, safe garden environments which are enjoyable for residents, owners and visitors.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out a wide range of gardening duties including soil cultivation, lawn maintenance, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, litter and debris clearing, hedge reductions, edging, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation and planting
  • Use a wide range of hand tools, horticultural machinery and powered hand tools, such as lawn movers, strimmers, hedge cutters etc. Ensuring the safe operation of all tools, keeping in good and safe working order
  • Liaising with property management agents, residents and clients representing the company being courteous, knowledgeable, helpful and polite at all times.
  • Communicate regularly with the senior staff regarding day-to-day operations. Completing site checklists, and taking photographs daily to record work completed on each visit.
  • Adhering to all health and safety legislations, reporting accidents, incidents and near misses.
  • Care for the vehicle that is assigned, including cleaning and basic maintenance i.e., oil checks, screen wash, tyre pressure check (where applicable)
  • Ensuring the appearance of clients’ grounds and gardens meet and exceed expectations and excellent customer service is always delivered.

Candidate Skills:

Plant knowledge is an essential part of the role, along with a keen eye for detail and precision. Proven experience in all aspects of grounds maintenance and a good understanding of safe working practices is essential. Experience using garden maintenance machinery and tools e.g., pedestrian mowers; strimmers; leaf blowers etc. is required. Candidates must be flexible to work additional hours if required, and willing to work across a number of sites and in all weather conditions. Reliability and punctuality must be maintained at all times. The company vans are stocked with quality tools and are provided as part of the role. Initially you will be working under an experienced team leader to familiarize yourself with the sites and client requirements.

Candidates will have good horticultural knowledge and practical ability. Essential skills will include:

  • Good knowledge of horticultural maintenance techniques
  • Excellent customer liaison skills
  • Practical skills using garden maintenance machinery and tools
  • Full UK driving licence is essential

An RHS Level 2 in Horticulture or similar is highly desirable for this role. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in both commercial and domestic environments. PA1/PA6 and LANTRA/NPTC certificates in any other relevant machinery and equipment use will further strengthen a candidate’s application.

Work hours are a minimum of 40 hours a week Monday-Friday.

Due to continued growth, they are now looking to bring in a horticulturist who is keen to develop into a client-facing, sales-focused role.

Role Overview:
This is an excellent opportunity for an entry level horticulturist who has ambitions to progress into sales. The successful candidate will receive full training and support, working closely with the Operations Manager and Projects Manager, learning how projects are costed, sold and delivered.

Initially the role will be hands-on and horticulturally focused, gradually developing into a more client-facing position as confidence and experience grow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the maintenance and aftercare of high-end domestic and commercial gardens
  • Assisting with planting, pruning, general garden maintenance and presentation of sites

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, reliable and keen to learn. This role would suit someone who enjoys horticulture but is also interested in developing commercial and design skills.

  • Willing to learn and take on feedback
  • Comfortable working as part of a team and developing independence over time
  • Passionate about plants and outdoor environments

Requirements:

  • Some formal horticultural training or practical experience (Level 2 desirable but not essential)
  • Good plant knowledge and interest in developing further
  • Physically fit and happy working outdoors in all weathers
  • Eligible to work in the UK

Working Hours:

  • Monday-Friday; 7:30am – 4:30pm
