Experienced Gardener

An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to manage and maintain a beautiful traditional English garden near Dorking in Surrey.  The role is permanent and would suit a passionate, energetic and experienced horticulturist with a flexible and positive attitude towards their work.  The position is offered as a 4 day per week position, however, the owners would consider applicants looking for 3 days / week.

The property comes with 9 acres of land, a river that runs along one side of the garden and about 3 acres of which are woodland. There is a large gravel driveway leading to the house that will require regular maintenance. A large terraced area overlooks expansive lawns with formal sections consisting of mixed beds and borders, topiary, a variety of mature and young trees, and wildflower meadows. There is also a pond with a water feature, swimming pool and tennis court. To the back of the house there is wisteria on the property and a collection of roses.

Currently the gardens are managed by contractors and the owners are looking for an experienced gardener to focus on their garden and drive it forward. The new Gardener will be responsible for management and enhancement of the gardens in general as well as developing new areas such as clearing and replanting an overgrown kitchen garden, creating an orchard and redesigning beds. As it is a sole position, the successful candidate will be hands on and confident with their horticultural knowledge and have a good understanding of the seasons and specialist pruning knowledge to execute and carry out the role to a high horticultural standard.

Additional duties will be part of the role particularly in the winter such as fixing fences, painting rails, cutting wood etc. Therefore, a chainsaw ticket or experience using a chainsaw is required. A recognised horticultural qualification would be desirable, though not essential if evidence of adequate experience can be provided. Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is useful.
