A rare and exciting full-time opportunity has arisen for a passionate and self-motivated Skilled Gardener to join a small team on a beautiful Hotel in Florence, Italy.

This lovely quaint hotel has approximately 3,000m2 gardens for the guests to enjoy and stroll amongst flowers, through the secret passages and hidden corners, with incredible views of Florence from the hill. The gardens are modelled on an English Country Garden and consist of mixed and herbaceous beds and borders including an intensely planted 20-meter border.   The hotel also an organic vegetable garden that provides fresh fruits and vegetables for breakfast and snacks for by the pool.

The pool area is currently being developed with a planting scheme to create a spectacular setting with the aim to be ready by Easter. The owner of the hotel is looking for an ambitious and driven skilled gardener to continue to grow as a horticulturalist on this beautiful garden.

The ideal candidate will have good all-rounded horticultural knowledge either from years of experience or, shorter experience with relevant qualifications. They will have a ‘can do attitude’ and be friendly and clear in communication when dealing with others. It is not essential that applicants speak Italian however, it would be advantageous to help with settling in Florence.

The role will entail general maintenance of the garden to a high horticultural standard such as the border maintenance, pruning, weeding, kitchen gardening, mowing, strimming, and hedge cutting as well as continuing to enhance and develop the gardens by carrying out planting improvements. Experience with operate and maintain a range of garden machinery as well as using a chainsaw would be advantageous.

The position comes with onsite accommodation, a studio apartment with electricity and heating paid which is suitable for single occupancy. The client is also open to a gardener / housekeeper couple where the housekeeper will work in the hotel on a full-time basis.

Senior Gardener

Our client is a school with a global reputation and inspiring facilities based in Shropshire. The Estates department is looking for a qualified, self-motivated, and efficient Senior Gardener to join their friendly and hardworking team. This is a full time, permanent and varied role which will involve assisting with the maintenance and development of the gardens and grounds.

The 110-acre grounds contain stunning architecture that compliments the natural beauty of ancient trees and open spaces that are meticulously maintained to a horticultural high standard by a dedicated Grounds and Gardens team. The grounds contain many elements including multiple sports pitches including football and rugby pitches, artificial hockey fields, grass squares and nets, artificial nets, cricket squares as well as multiple tennis and netball courts. The trees, plants and green spaces at the school contribute to biodiversity and enrich the lives of all students and staff, with wildflower meadows and over 750 trees within the 50-acres of amenity areas.

The Senior Gardener will report to the Grounds Manager and help guide the gardens team, working collaboratively with colleagues as part of a professional team. The role will involve being responsible for preparing grounds for the planting of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants as well as maintain borders, hedges, fences, walls, paths, roadways, and woodlands. He / She will carry out horticultural operations, such as planting, pruning and maintenance of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Lawn maintenance is part of the role with the use of pedestrian and ride-on equipment to scarify, aerate, top-dress, over-seed, lift and lay turf, feed, irrigate and cut.

Specialist duties will include organising the daily work schedules and ensuring the continued delivery of high standards throughout the team, as well as working to agreed budgets and timescales. The Senior Gardener will also be required to design and organise specific gardening projects for the school and implement summer and winter bedding schemes.

The successful applicant will hold a relevant horticultural qualification and spraying certificates, PA1 & PA6 as well as have experience maintaining large or historic gardens. He / She work on own and as part of a team as well as use their own initiative and will be self-motivated, adaptable and be willing to undertake tasks to given time constraints. Experience maintaining and cleaning horticultural equipment including hand tools, strimmers, hedge-cutters, pedestrian and ride on mowers, scarifiers, aerators, tractors and any other machinery required to undertake allocated tasks is important to continue working in a tidy and safe manner. The Senior Gardener will be comfortable working outside in all weathers and the role may require heavy lifting occasionally. Please note candidates will need to hold a full clean drivers licence.  

A competitive salary is provided as well as additional benefits such as free lunch during term-time, free car parking, free use of the school’s facilities when not in use by the pupils (library, swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, squash courts). 28 days paid holiday per calendar year including public holidays, pension, and life insurance scheme. The basic hours are 39 hours per week working during term-time and during school holidays. Normal working days are Monday to Thursday 8:am-5:00pm and from 8:00am to 4:00pm on a Friday with a 1-hour unpaid lunchbreak, however the Senior Gardener will be expected to be flexible to meet the needs of the school. The successful applicant will be required to work on a rota basis through the terms as follows: Michaelmas and Lent - 1 weekend in every 6 Summer Term - 1 evening each week and 5 weekends through the 10 week term. These hours are in addition to the salary and claimable as overtime on a timesheet.

The beautiful 550-acre estate includes organic grassland, walled gardens, lush pasture, heath land designated as a site of special scientific interest, lakes and banks of woodland to the river Tavy in the valley below. The 12 acre (and growing) formal garden surrounding the main house comprising wildflower meadows, azaleas, rhododendrons, a rose garden full of climbers, floribundas, Hybrid Tea and shrub with scented varieties, an orchard and a variety of mature trees.

The Senior Gardener will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with a friendly disposition. They will have excellent horticultural knowledge, high working standards and be able to work using their own initiative both as part of a team and individually. The successful applicant will join a small team overseeing one other team member and a part time gardener. Sole Gardener

A Sole Gardener is sought after to manage and maintain a beautiful 24-acre estate situated in North Hertfordshire. The grounds comprise 12 acres of paddocks plus formal garden and waterways / ancient moat. The formal gardens consist of lawns, shrubberies, borders, hedging, green house, large patio with pots and planters. There is also a vegetable garden, fruit cage and orchard, plus a shared driveway with trees and grassed areas. The owners have a donkey sanctuary for rescue donkeys on the estate and keep a number of chickens, geese, sheep and pigs.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced gardener who has excellent practical skills in all aspects of craft gardening and is able to maintain the garden and grounds to a high standard. The owners are keen to find someone who is able to use their initiative and has the skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to work closely with them in helping to develop certain aspects of the garden.

The person appointed will be a team player and have a flexible approach to their duties as they will occasionally be required to look after the livestock and assist in the donkey sanctuary, as well as being available for occasional security duties if the owners are away.

The sole gardener will have good knowledge of plants and garden practices. Experience in vegetable and fruit production and propagation work would be an advantage. He / She will have experience using a range of garden machinery as well as drive a tractor with attachments. Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable is not essential. Due to its rural location, it is important that applicants have a current driving licence with own transport.

Following the completion of the project, the successful candidate will be involved in the ongoing maintenance of the property, which is situated in Adstone however, there will also be the potential to assist in the maintenance of the main business park during the busy summer months.

The requirements of this role are to assist with the machinery and landscaping duties relating to the formal grounds as well as the wider estate, such as:

  • Experience driving and operating telehandlers.
  • General laboring to assist the rest of the team cement mixing, barrowing and ensuring the work area are tidy and organised.
  • Planting trees and hedges with appropriate aftercare
  • Experienced at hedge cutting
  • General maintenance of the grounds including spraying weeds with a knapsack, pruning trees and ensuring the woodlands and shrubbery are appropriately planted and remain in good health.

Main Responsibilities

As a Landscape Gardener on this stunning site, the successful candidate will play a key role as a member of the landscaping team on the maintenance of all landscape and infrastructure. Playing an important part of the development and ongoing maintenance of the site.

Main duties will include:

  • Reporting to the Landscape Manager you will maintain and prepare all horticultural and ecological areas as directed, assisting in all forms of landscaping

They are currently seeking a Gardener to assist in the day-to-day maintenance of the various sites.

Job Brief

Our client is looking for a friendly, motivated, and reliable candidate to become part of the Garden Maintenance department and contribute to the quality of the service they provide and professionally represent the company. The successful candidate will be operating from the company offices and depot and will be involved in a range of soft landscaping activities which include:

  • Grass cutting and strimming
  • Hedge cutting
  • Pruning, shrub and rose bed maintenance
  • Weed control

Key Responsibilities

A suitable candidate will have prior experience working within the garden maintenance environment.

  • Deliver first quality maintenance on sites to their specification in a timely and efficient manner
  • Show a good understanding of all health and safety regulations, and always adhering to them.
  • Being able to confidently deal with horticultural maintenance matters on site.
  • The client emphasises the need for excellent communication skills to successfully engage with customers, clients, and team members.

Candidate Skills

Applicants should be physically fit with a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work on their own initiative and willingness to work consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. This role entails being the representative of the company on the ground and candidates will need to conduct yourself that portrays the business in accordance with its values and approach at all times. The company works in a close geographical area travelling no more than 15 miles from the main office.

The ideal candidate will hold:

  • A full UK manual driving licence (required).
  • Experience working within a similar environment
  • Experience using a range of garden machinery

PA1/PA6a spray certificates are desirable, but not essential, and where required the client will assist in the training to obtain the certificates.

Working Hours:

Monday to Thursday 7:30am – 5pm, Friday 7:30am-4pm; with overtime available.
