Our client is a modern, family-owned garden centre with multiple locations, seeking a Garden Centre Plant Area Manager for one of their sites in south Hampshire. Priding themselves on excellent customer service, the business offers a variety of gardening, lifestyle, giftware and fine food products. There is a coffee shop on site, as well as an indoor soft play area.
Role Overview:
This is an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable and passionate plant area manager to work within a friendly, family-run business. The purpose of the role is to manage the day-to-day operation of the plant area within the garden centre in order to maximise profitable sales. The plant area manager will be responsible for the garden centre assistants in the plant area working underneath the garden centre manager.
The working hours for the role are 8:00am – 5:30pm, 40 hours per week, inclusive of every other weekend.
General duties:
- To ensure that all customers are treated in a courteous and efficient manner.
- To ensure that all instructions by the Garden Centre Manager are carried out in a timely and efficient manor.
- To ensure Sales Assistants work efficiently and are focused on their work tasks.
- To act as part of the garden centre management team including as Duty Manager when required.
- To identify strengths and weaknesses amongst the Plant area team and to assist in the training and motivation of individuals to achieve the required standards of performance.
- To ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner and that all matters affecting Health & Safety at Work are carried out in accordance with regulations.
- To ensure a safe working environment within the centre for employees, concessionaires, customers and visitors.
- To ensure that customers receive a high standard of service at all times and responding to customer complaints and comments.
- To ensure that all equipment used within the shop operation is maintained in good condition and held securely.
- To help ensure the security of all company property on-site.
- Managing and forecasting stock levels and requirements.
- Maintain an awareness of market trends and report significant developments to the Garden Centre Manager.
- To provide input into the design, layout and stocking of the plant area.
- To perform any other duties and objectives as required to contribute effectively to the achievement of the business aims and objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure sales assistants know the plant area layout and can help customers find the plants and products they require.
- Tour the plant area regularly to ensure high standards of housekeeping and merchandising.
- Ensure sales assistants provide advice to customers or ask for help and pass customer to others if required.
- Organise watering and house keeping systems in the plant area and be part of the rota as needed.
- Ensure the plant area is stocked, replenished and cleaned as needed.
- Place orders to replenish stock to levels agreed by the Garden Centre Manager.
- Implement plant area display and promotional changes including production of POS.
- Routinely review Health & Safety practice to ensure that a high standard is maintained, and suggest training needs.
- Maximise product sales through effective merchandising and in-store promotion.
- Maintain security of all cash (including HTA and garden centres own gift tokens).
Person Specification:
- Strong plant knowledge.
- Prior management experience.
- Ability to perform garden centre administrative duties.
- Ability to motivate and inspire staff members.
- Good organisational skills.
- Ability to work on own initiative.
- Able to focus on key tasks and details being consistent and methodical under pressure.
- Buying experience would be advantageous but not essential.
