Our client is a well-established garden centre with multiple locations, looking for a garden centre manager at one of their sites in Buckinghamshire. It also serves as the company’s nursery, where they grow hundreds of thousands of plants each year, catering to both retail customers and landscaping projects.
Role Overview:
As the Garden Centre Manager, you will lead and develop a team to deliver the highest level of customer service while working closely with Directors and Managers to shape the future of the business. The successful candidate will bring proven experience in managing garden centres or retail businesses, overseeing all departments and ensuring efficient operations that align with the company’s strategic goals.
Key Experience and Skills:
- Extensive experience in garden centre management or a related retail field.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to manage both people and operations across various departments.
- A customer-centric mindset, with the ability to drive sales while delivering exceptional service.
- Proven knowledge of stock management, buying processes, and liaising with suppliers and representatives.
- Expertise in managing all aspects of retail, from product display to customer experience, ensuring seamless site operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the team to uphold exceptional retail standards throughout the site, maintaining a welcoming, positive atmosphere for customers.
- Manage department heads, setting clear goals to drive sales and meet targets.
- Foster a culture of ownership and accountability, promoting a productive and enjoyable work environment for all staff members.
- Collaborate with department leaders to ensure the right product mix, staffing, and customer service levels.
- Oversee the management of both indoor and outdoor plant areas, ensuring they meet high standards.
- Work closely with Directors to introduce new ideas and initiatives to enhance the business.
- Manage staffing rotas, ensuring adequate coverage in collaboration with site supervisors.
- Liaise with the maintenance team and source quotes for site repairs or improvements when necessary.
Person Specification:
- Strong retail management background with a proven sales record.
- IT proficiency, including experience with Office and EPOS systems.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to foster strong relationships with both staff and customers.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle challenges effectively.
- Passion for team development, with a focus on creating a positive, motivated team culture.
- Approachable, outgoing, and able to work well with Directors, HR, team members, and customers alike.=
