Our client is a modern, family-owned garden centre with multiple locations, seeking a Garden Centre Assistant Manager for one of their sites in south Hampshire. Priding themselves on excellent customer service, the business offers a variety of gardening, lifestyle, giftware and fine food products. There is a coffee shop on site, as well as an indoor soft play area.

Role Overview:

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to advance their retail management career within a friendly, family-run business. The purpose of the role is to manage the day-to-day operation of the garden centre site to maximise profitable sales while maintaining health and safety standards. The assistant manager will be responsible for the entire site including assistants, shop, plant and catering manager. The candidate will share the role with an already established assistant manager, working underneath the garden centre manager.

The working hours for the role are 8:00am – 5:30pm, 40 hours per week, inclusive of every other weekend.

General duties:

  • To ensure that all customers are treated in a courteous and efficient manner.
  • To ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner and that all matters affecting Health & Safety at Work are carried out in accordance with regulations.
  • To ensure a safe working environment within the centre for employees, concessionaires, customers and visitors.
  • To ensure that customers receive a high standard of service at all times and respond to customer complaints and comments.
  • To help ensure the security of all company property on-site.
  • Maintain an awareness of market trends.
  • To provide input into the design, layout and stocking of the garden centre site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure that all instructions by the Directors are carried out in a timely and efficient manner.
  • To ensure that all instructions by the Garden Centre Manager are carried out in a timely and efficient manner.
  • To ensure Assistants and managers work efficiently and are focused on their work tasks.
  • To identify strengths and weaknesses amongst the retail team and to assist in the training and motivation of individuals to achieve the required standards of performance.
  • To ensure that all equipment used within the shop operation is maintained in good condition and held securely.
  • Managing and forecasting stock levels and requirements.
  • To complete paperwork conforming to company policy.
  • To perform any other duties and objectives as required to contribute effectively to the achievement of the business aims and objectives.

Person Specification:

  • A strong retail or horticultural background.
  • Prior management experience.
  • Ability to perform garden centre administrative duties.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire staff members.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Able to focus on key tasks and details being consistent and methodical under pressure.
