In a rural village style, the park has formal gardens encompassing the community of commercial properties which are all newly built and constructed from reclaimed building materials – with the family also living next to the business park. The immediate gardens consist of various planting and a mixture of trees, lawns, hedges, shrubs and ponds. Extending into the wider estate, there are paddocks, grass walkways, woodlands, extensive hedges and lakes. The successful candidate will be required to maintain these areas to a high standard throughout the year under the instruction and assistance of the Head Gardener.

This position is suitable for a hands-on and physically fit individual who is experienced in general estate garden maintenance tasks which include but are not limited to weeding, pruning, planting, hedge cutting, grass care and maintenance. They will be required to keep hard landscaped areas such as water features and paths clean and clear with the use of necessary machinery such as pressure washers and knapsacks. An understanding of the correct horticultural practises and when to use them throughout the seasons is essential for this position. The successful candidate will need to be competent in the use of a wide range of general gardening machinery with chemical spraying and chainsaw licenses being advantageous but not essential.

This role offers the opportunity to assist the head gardener in purchasing and propagating plants from a local nursery as well as creating planting schemes for the formal areas. Additional duties included with this role include harrowing the liveries menage twice a month, ensuring that the bait boxes around the site are kept topped up and the maintenance of both water and woodland areas. This position requires a full, UK driving license.

Head Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join a small team on a large privately-owned estate near Northampton.  The gardens are open to the public throughout the summer months and are maintained to a high standard throughout the year.  This position would suit a qualified and knowledgeable gardener with excellent attention to detail and experience of supervising under gardeners.

The formal and ‘wild’ gardens located adjacent to the main house extend to approximately 13 acres and have been developed over the course of the last century by each of the property owners, in association with several distinguished landscape designers.  The gardens comprise a series of ‘rooms’ separated by mature yew hedges and walls which enclose large herbaceous borders, formal ponds, statuary and a fine collection of mature trees and shrubs.  An additional less formal garden is set on the banks of a meandering stream.

The new Head Gardener will work in collaboration with the property owner, though largely autonomously with support from two further members of the gardening team to ensure that the gardens are managed and presented to an extremely high standard.  Applications are invited from either current estate Head or Senior Gardeners with experienced of managing large estate gardens throughout the seasons.  The successful applicant will need to be committed, trustworthy, self-motivated, have an eye for detail and a desire to achieve high standards.  Applicants must possess good supervisory and communication skills as well as a positive attitude.  This is very much a hands-on position that requires good leadership skills and enthusiasm for disseminating horticultural knowledge to those within the team.

Applicants will ideally hold a minimum RHS Level 3 or equivalent horticulture qualification, with PA1/PA6 chemical spray certificates being desirable.  Candidates must have comprehensive plant knowledge and familiarity with most gardening practices, including the use of common garden machinery.  As the role will involve the supervision of under gardeners, a clear understanding and working knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation is required.

Although the position is predominantly based on a 39-hour working week, flexibility is required to cover weekends and Bank Holidays as required for the purposes of watering and open days.  The position can potentially be offered on a live-out basis to candidates already living locally.  This position offers an excellent opportunity to work within the celebrated gardens of a fabulous historic estate, within a close-knit team, and for owners who are genuinely passionate about their gardens.

General day-to-day duties will include garden maintenance, helping with glasshouse and polytunnel operations, help with the management of herbaceous borders, seasonal bedding and containers, pruning, spraying, assisting with routine garden machinery maintenance and checks and ensuring sheds and glasshouses are kept clean and tidy.  The successful candidate will be required to help when the gardens are open to the public, mainly during the summer months, and will be willing to undertake other duties including but not limited to liaising with other estate departments, outside contractors, and helping to look after dogs.
