Sole Gardener

An idyllic vacancy has arisen for an experienced and skilled Sole Gardener to take ownership of a stunning private garden near Altrincham, Greater Manchester. This position would suit an energetic and knowledgeable plants person with a creative eye and fine attention to detail.

The residence is surrounded by roughly 6-acres of formal gardens, pond, and woodland. The gardens feature formal lawns, glasshouse trained fruit trees, an organic kitchen garden which grows a variety of fresh produce for the main house such as seasonal vegetables and soft fruit. Also within the gardens are mixed herbaceous borders, annual display beds and a rose garden. There’s also knotted hedging, lots of topiary and yew hedging plus a wildflower meadow, two ponds and ancient woodland. The grounds were almost entirely reworked back in 2021 however are already well stocked and matured to create a beautiful and horticulturally diverse open space.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for all aspects of garden care and ornamental horticulture as well as kitchen gardening, propagation, lawn care and maintenance, operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, species specific pruning and any other horticultural duties that may arise.  The owners are passionate about their garden and often take inspiration from other gardens they visit and are open to new ideas the Sole Gardener may have. As such, it is hoped the successful candidate will have a keen interest in design to advise and aid the principles in getting the most from their garden as it continues to develop and mature.

Occasionally the Sole Gardener will be required to help on the wider estate, woodlands or other tasks appointed by the Estate Manager, so flexibility within the role is necessary. Additional ad hoc tasks may occur and will include but are not limited to helping set up for any events or functions at the property, pathway clearance, fence maintenance and other such tasks.

The ideal candidate for this role will be knowledgeable and experienced at Skilled/Sole/Senior level, holding a recognised horticultural qualification with extensive experience working within a similar environment, with a PA1 & PA6 spraying certificate desirable but not essential. Demonstrable skill and experience in all aspects of garden care is essential, as is excellent knowledge of garden management, good time management skills and excellent attention to detail. This is a private residence therefore applicants must be loyal and be trustworthy, self-motivated and interested in assisting with ongoing development of the garden through discussions with the owner. The owners have two small dogs as pets, plus there are guard dogs that live on site; therefore, the successful applicant should be at ease with dogs.

This is a full time, permanent position based on a 40-hour week, Monday to Friday with start and finish times dependant of the season. Holiday entitlement is 28 days per annum including all public Bank Holidays. Please note the successful candidate will be subject to reference checks, a DBS check and will be required to sign an NDA.
