Job Description
The Head of Production will oversee the entire production team and provide strategic input on the day-to-day and long-term running of the company. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in the horticultural sector or have experience of a similar role within a fresh produce or FMCG business.
The Head of Production is an integral role within our client’s business, predominantly overseeing end to end company-wide operations including the production, growth and dispatch of the product. In reporting to the Board of Directors, the successful candidate will be responsible for the direct line management of the Transport Manager, four Site Managers and Growing Team. A key focus for the Head of Production will be to develop and implement operating methods and procedures including company-wide space planning method, designed to reduce or eliminate operating problems and improve product cost, quality, delivery, performance, and customer satisfaction. In line with the company’s Core Values, they will be required to create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.
Key Accountabilities
- Responsible for managing all elements of plant production (including planning, potting, moving plants, minimising waste and managing budgets) to achieve customer specifications and sales windows.
- Active member of the Leadership Team contributing to the running of the Company and shaping overall business strategy.
- Chair regular production meetings to review, evaluate and improve the performance of the production team.
- Build strong internal working relationships with Purchasing, Production, Operations and QA teams to ensure that purchasing timelines are met; procedures are followed; customer specifications are achieved and goods are dispatched in a timely manner.
- Establish an R&D team and lead on new projects (e.g. new varieties, peat-free trials etc), as directed by the Company.
- Work closely with Stock Control to ensure that production data is accurately captured in the Company’s ERP software (Netsuite).
- Work closely with the space management planning team to ensure we grow the right product in the right environment and at the right time.
- Effective line management of site managers, growers and logistics team. Work with HR and Training Principal to ensure that the production team is continuously developing and meeting skills requirements.
- Work closely with the Quality and Compliance Manager to ensure all operations on site are in accordance with the HSE expectations.
- Create an environment of employee engagement, training and succession to create a high performance, motivated work culture and continuous improvement environment.
- Identify production CAPEX and investment opportunities for the team.
- Have a sound awareness of industry developments and news. Attend tradeshows, industry events and customer meetings, as required.

Our clients supply 90% of garden centres and over five major retailers across the UK, growing within a mixture of glasshouses, polytunnels and outdoor beds. They are now looking for a Key Sales Account Manager to join the experienced and friendly team.
Role purpose:
As the Key Sales Account Manager, you will be the primary point of contact for key retailers and various independent garden centres. Maintaining sales across all accounts and strategically grow others with new and existing products, as directed by the business. Part of the role will be building relationships with these key account contacts and working closely with the Sales Director to analyse and strategically review each account to achieve sales and profit objectives.
Key Accountabilities:
- Deliver sales turnover and margin expectations for the Key Accounts
- Work with the Sales Director to strategically grow certain Key Accounts with new and existing products.
- Ensure the Key Accounts receive the highest levels of customer service, addressing all queries in a responsive and constructive manner.
- Work with the Sales Director and NPD to design and deliver a comprehensive product range for certain Key Accounts
- Ensure that all sales volume nursery forecasts are ultimately sold through to minimise wastage on the nursery.
- Build strong internal working relationships with Purchasing, Production, Operations and GC teams to ensure that purchasing timelines are met; procedures are followed; customer specifications are achieved, and goods are dispatched in a timely manner.
- Take part in regular crop-walks to ensure that all Key Account requirements are met.
- Have a strategic input into internal meetings. Bring new ideas forward on new and existing range, competition analysis and feedback on the wider industry.
- Manage administrative systems – supporting Sales Assistant in all areas, ensuring paperwork is accurate and completed in a timely manner, manage and invoicing queries, oversee any other admin activities and become well versed in the business’ ERP system (Netsuite)
- Have a sound awareness of industry developments and news (e.g., relevant publications, store visits). Attend tradeshows and industry events, as required.
Candidates with be provided with a company phone and laptop as well as access to a pool vehicle, therefore a full clean driver’s licence is required.
This is a full-time, permanent role with working hours 8am-5pm. Holiday entitlement is 31 days including bank holidays.

We have a very exciting opportunity now open specifically within the alpine division of the business. We wish to recruit a skilled Head Grower to join and oversee the experienced team. The individual will be joining a very stable and successful family business with a rich heritage built over 4 generations of growing.
The role encompasses the oversight of over 700 different varieties of alpines across 20+ acres of varying production facilities. This starts at a production level, having a collaborative input into daily production and product placement alongside the Operations Manager. Then continues throughout the growth of the plants, implementing a comprehensive ICM programme incorporating pest and disease management, irrigation and feed management.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
-Manage all areas of an ICM (integrated crop management) scheme across all sites. Areas assigned to the growing team, to include water management, environmental management, IPM and crop protection.
-Implement and manage a weed control strategy across department production and sites.
-Manage daily tasks and working hours of the growing team.
-Manage the wastage recording procedure across division working closely with Head of department and QA team.
-All areas of product selection working with the Operations Manager and Head of department including plug choice, supplier choice, growing media and associated raw materials to deliver quality products that achieve set specification and quality throughout.

Additional to the focus on alpine growing the role oversees the management of over 1/2 million Hardy ornamental container grown plants, including shrubs & herbaceous perennials.
The role also involves the leadership of the growing team currently made up of 4+ skilled growers. These work over various sites and have varying horticultural specialisms. The individual is in charge of staff rotas, delegating tasks, managing workloads, monitoring output, providing training and ensuring the development of each individual.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished alpine Grower with a wealth of experience and knowledge within the specific field. Additional experience working with HNS and herbaceous perennials is essential also. An extensive understanding of the entire alpine production and growing process is required, including an appreciation for all frequently used machinery. A track record within the horticultural sector must be held including relevant training and qualifications. They must be a breast of industry changes including new laws and regulations. A thorough understanding of both indoor and outdoor growing techniques is required.
The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills able to lead and inspire the growing team and collaborate on a daily basis with the Operations Manager. The ability to provide feedback and weekly reports to Managers and the Company Board is essential as well as reporting concerns and working collectively with the QA team. Competent computer skills are needed, including the ability to manage Microsoft Word, excel, outlook plus internal programs. Good organisational skills are essential in order to manage schedules and ensure product specifications are met on time.

A new vacancy for a Nursery Maintenance Manager to lead the existing maintenance team has arisen on their large site in the North West of England. This is a hands-on technical role, with the successful candidate being responsible for ensuring equipment and buildings are maintained to a high standard, plus the management of a small team of skilled operatives. The successful applicant will also manage all ongoing maintenance projects/refurbishment programmes and plan resources.
The ideal candidate will have a wide variety of skill and qualifications in various horticultural nursery maintenance techniques, including but not limited to glasshouses, production equipment and vehicles. Applicants must have experience in implementing preventative and planned maintenance schedules and must be able to work within set budgets. Demonstrable relevant managerial experience is essential, as is a full UK driving licence.
Experience in a similar role as well as relevant qualifications in relation to the duties below, are essential:
- Repairing and improving nursery sites including internal and external fittings
- Repair of glasshouse structures including glass replacement and any repairs in greenhouses.

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and ambitious Head Gardener to develop and manage the private garden in the Leyland area, Lancashire.
The family house is newly built, and the garden covers about twenty-seven and a half acres of land to undergo substantial development. The project is in the early stage of development, the grass has been laid and the hedges have been planted by the landscaper. The new Head Gardener will join at a time where their involvement will be valuable and rewarding in equal measure.
To the west of the house is the Arboretum, the shrubbery and the church woods containing a variety of mature trees. To the east, there is a 1-acre walled kitchen garden (to be implemented), the kennels, expansive lawns and the east wood. The successful applicant will have significant input in the development of the site in terms of overall design, implementation, planting, after care and ongoing management. There is currently a handyman / gardener onsite to support the Head Gardener and as the garden develops, the Head Gardener will have the opportunity to recruit.
Applicants should hold a level 3 horticultural qualification or higher as well have demonstrable experience of developing gardens. Garden project management and budgeting experience is essential for the role. He/she will have experience managing garden staff, excellent plant identification skills, competence with a full range of garden machinery, kitchen gardening experience and a working knowledge of plant propagation and glasshouse work. Spray certificates (PA1/6) and a chainsaw certificate (CS30/31) are desirable but not essential.

A Skilled Gardener with excellent plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticulture is required to assist the Head Gardener, and in his absence be responsible for the garden and associated areas. The successful candidate will be required to provide direction and supervision to employees less skilled than themselves, in the absence of the Head Gardener.
This stunning and diverse site, nestled at the foot of ancient beech woodland at the foot of the eastern side of the Lune Valley, contains many features designed to impress at every turn. The Skilled Gardener will assist, and in the absence of the Head Gardener be responsible for, supervision of garden staff and the management of any delegated projects, maintenance and daily garden tasks. Contribution to all appropriate garden meetings and assistance of the Head Gardener will be expected in order to promote open and effective communication on work related issues amongst staff. Applicants for this position must be confident in character, well presented and be willing to promote the public’s enjoyment of the garden through high standards of presentation and customer care. The successful applicant will be required to share the weekend responsibilities with Head Gardener on a rota basis, i.e. greenhouse and nursery management, feeding the chickens and outing them to bed, and checking the security of the Hall and the grounds as a matter of course.
Applicants for this role should hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above as well as extensive experience of gardening at a skilled level on horticulturally diverse private estates. Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence, be physically fit and must be happy working in all weather conditions. Continued professional development by way of relevant training courses will be offered to the successful candidate, to which attendance is expected.
Accommodation is provided in the local village by way of a two-bedroom house. Council tax and rent are covered by the employer, with the successful candidate being liable for their own utility bills.

A highly skilled and motivated experienced gardener is sought after to maintain and enhance 3 locations in Preston, Lancashire owned by our client; retail park, commercial site and a beautiful country private estate. This position would suit a presentable and time-served gardener with demonstrable experience.
The experienced gardener will take responsibility for the enhancement of the sites to a high horticultural standard and the general maintenance i.e. mowing, pruning, strimming, hedge cutting, pest control, weeding as well as horticultural practices such as planting, soil and shrubbery, and some developments. The private property contains 10 acres of formal gardens with a walled garden including a parterre and sunken garden. There is a full-time gardener at the private property with whom the experience gardener will work with on the days they are onsite.
The successful candidate will have excellent horticultural knowledge, hold a horticultural qualification and be fully conversant with planting methods, soil properties, pruning and pest control. He / She should be comfortable working autonomously on multiple projects, highly organised with the ability to complete projects to an extremely high standard. He / She should be highly self-motivated, well presented, with a good eye for detail, able to organise and carry out work with minimum supervision. Good health and safety knowledge is important, a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and PA1/PA6 is preferred. A full clean driving licence is essential for the role.

From their huge plantarea to the beautiful gift department and popular restaurant, this centre has something for everyone and is a destination centre for the keen gardener. They are currently seeking a Garden Centre Manager who can think on their feet and run this small but successful business.
