An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced General Manager at a very well established and respected plant nursery in central western England.  This permanent full-time vacancy is open to experienced managers with a strong background in nursery production and operations.  An excellent negotiable salary is offered in line with experience.  With decades of history and over 100 acres of container production for quality retailers, this company has secured its place as one of the leading nurseries in the country. 

The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for production and operations and will need to lead and manage the planning, organisation and implementation of key aspects of the business plan. The General Manager will ensure the delivery of performance targets and business strategy by managing and developing departmental teams so that they work efficiently and continue to deliver outstanding quality and customer service, on which the company has built its reputation.

The General Manager will be a key developer and driver of business SOP and polices and will train, mentor, lead, recruit and develop a high-performance team, in order to ensure the smooth operation and running of many millions of pounds-worth of Horticultural equipment.  The General Manager will also be responsible for and/or assist in key project development areas with the Managing Director, will be responsible for Health and Safety, and to continually observe operations and suggest how the business can increase its effectiveness, efficiency, quality and customer service across all areas.

Applicants for this role must be excellent communicators with experience in a similar role, i.e., at managerial level.  Strong IT skills including the use of Microsoft Excel are essential, as is an understanding of process improvement, LEAN and Quality systems.  The successful candidate will be an inspirational team player and must have a good track record of being a successful senior manager or being in a leadership role within the Horticultural sector.  A thorough understanding of the technical requirements of production horticulture is required, as is a good understanding of horticultural machinery, as the General Manager must be able to direct the maintenance team and contractors, as necessary.  Competency in negotiation and procurement is also required to be successful in this role.  Applicants should hold academic horticultural qualifications and must be able to demonstrate competency, via previously held positions, in each of the above areas.

Sole Gardener (Live out) - EC4990 - This position has been filled

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and skilled Sole Gardener to take ownership of a stunning family-run private estate garden in Ross-on-Wye.  The estate owners and employees are passionate about the application of organic gardening principles and associated seasonal produce and as such, are looking for a talented horticulturist with experience and enthusiasm in these areas.

The ten-bedroom manor house is set within a wider shooting estate with wildflower meadows, paddocks and resident horses providing an idyllic backdrop to the classic English country garden itself.  The two acre garden comprises formal lawns, herbaceous borders, mature trees and shrubs, small ponds, three bee hives, a kitchen garden, glasshouses and a polytunnel supplying seasonal produce and cut flowers to the house. 

Suitable applicants will be experienced and qualified horticulturists/gardeners, ideally holding academic horticultural qualifications at Level 3 or higher.  Responsibilities will include the management of the above garden features as well as that of the formal lawn, care and ongoing development of wildflower meadows and management of an ornamental lake.  An additional much smaller residential garden will require basic maintenance to the same level of standard as the main manor house garden. 

Applicants must be personable and presentable with good time management skills and excellent attention to detail.  Candidates must have excellent communication skills and be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Importantly, a genuine passion for plants, wildlife and organic growing methods is essential; however spray certificates (PA1 and PA6) are required as herbicide is used on driveways and paths only.  A full UK driving licence is necessary as the estate is located rurally.

With the outgoing Sole Gardener moving on to study after 9 happy years in the role, this is an excellent opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic gardener to join the estate at an exciting time in its development.

Sole Gardener (Live Out) - EC4907 - This position has been filled

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and experienced Sole Gardener to work alongside a keen plants woman within her family garden. Sitting near to the Malvern Hills, this is a garden that is developing, and the owners seek a candidate with passion to maintain and continue the story.

In keeping with the owners’ ethos, the entire garden is managed organically and planted to attract pollinating insects and wildlife. Management of pests is via use of biological controls, judicious planting and crop management. The client has adopted a no-dig policy through much of the site. Encompassing an area of rough mown grass, yew hedging and mature trees.  The core estate is currently comprised of a walled kitchen and herb garden, a small orchard, croquet lawn, wild flower meadow and greenhouses. In all, the garden is approximately one and a half acres with a mown field of similar size. Abundantly planted borders are full of interesting and rare plants; bulbs, herbaceous, grasses, roses, dahlias and annuals with more mature specimens.

Successful applicants should be able to produce a solid body of evidence with regards to their work history along with horticultural qualifications relevant to the role. The Sole Gardener will be involved with all aspects of garden care; planting, pruning, bed and border development and maintenance, mowing and lawn care, kitchen gardening and plant propagation utilising the existing greenhouses. The owner is planning extensions to the current garden and would wish the applicant to be involved in the planning and implementation of the new areas. The new areas will comprise new gardens and a small area of new, trees totalling approximately half an acre.

Applicants will ideally hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification at level 3 or above and/or extensive experience on private estates at a similar level.  Applicants must have excellent practical and theoretical knowledge in each of the above areas and should also have extensive experience of managing private estate gardens efficiently throughout the seasons.  This role requires a well-rounded knowledge of horticulture, efficient time management and excellent attention to detail at all times.  Applicants should be well-versed in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and should have a good level of physical fitness.
