Our client is seeking a Centre Manager to lead their well-established award-winning garden centre. They pride them self on offering a wide range of Plants, Gardening, Christmas, gifts, great restaurant food and experience and Pets and Aquatics. The Centre also has an onsite ice rink and will be adding more leisure options to the site in the future. This role involves profit management, operational oversight, team leadership and business development.

Responsibilities:

The Centre Manager will oversee the Garden Centre's profit and loss to optimize profit contribution, managing an annual turnover of £4 million. The centre is going under a large redevelopment and will be increasing to another 5 acres, and the centre has invested 2 million in its aquatics department. This will require the Centre Manager to be adaptable and be able to manage projects outside of normal retailing. The Centre Manager will work alongside the directors to recruit, motivate, and manage a team of 80 staff to achieve annual objectives. Additionally, the Centre Manager will ensure high levels of customer support, satisfaction, and loyalty.

Required Skills:

  • Supervisory experience in a customer-oriented retail environment (essential)
  • Commercial awareness: Understanding the retail market, including knowledge of competitors, market trends, and customer behaviour.

We specialise in bedding plants, produced on site by our skilled plants-people.

The ideal Plant Area Manager will: 
  • Have a minimum two years' experience of working in garden centres, although we are open to talking to candidates from any horticultural background.
  • Have an enthusiastic personality with an ability to easily engage with and connect with our customers.

  • Have excellent knowledge of plants, plant care and maintenance.

Duties Involved:

  • Inputting this data onto our CSY Vector EPOS till system. Training can be provided.
  • Making labels using in-house software, and other POS items. Training can be provided.
  • Giving great customer service through expert plant knowledge.
  • Maintaining good quality plant stock by watering, feeding, weeding, pruning, dead-heading etc.
  • Keeping the shrub area tidy and well merchandised.
  • Maintaining a strong and up-to-date horticultural knowledge.
  • Supervising a small team

The varied nature of the role means that alongside a team of departmental managers you will be required to oversee garden sundries retail, plant area, giftware, Christmas, nursery plant production and catering.

The position requires someone with a strong business focus. It is important that the right candidate has a combination of commercial (retail) experience and horticultural interest. We are looking for someone with at least five years’ experience in a similar retail environment, with at least two years in a management role. This does not have to be restricted to a garden centre environment, but does need to be in a similar retail environment attracting A/B customers. You will need to have had experience with EPOS software and have excellent computer skills.

The right candidate is someone who possesses excellent customer service and people management skills. You must be well organised and a good, calm communicator. You will be well motivated and enjoy growing sales and profitability.

The following summarises the main responsibilities

RESPONSIBLE TO: Owners and General Manager

MAIN DUTIES
  • Manage, develop, and train staff
  • Advise on external training required
  • Advise on team numbers required
  • Be responsible for the day to day management and monitoring of the gardens and maintenance team including routine staff monitoring, timekeeping and setting objectives
  • Ensure that all work carried out by the team is carried out safely and complies with H&S legislation and Mercia Marina H&S Policy
  • Monitor performance against schedules
  • Check daily the repair log and arrange/undertake repairs as required
  • Be proactive in identifying areas where gardens and maintenance can be improved or where current working practices can be reviewed
  • Ensure site safety is maintained through regular inspection of above ground infrastructure

  • Liaise with owners/General Manager and landscape consultant on new and replacement planting, seasonal bedding plants & other horticultural materials as required

  • Be responsible for carrying out or arranging maintenance/repair/replacement of equipment
  • Be responsible for safe use and return to store of all tools
  • Compile list of any new/replacement tools and PPE required
  • Ensure site is kept clean and litter free through ongoing litter picking and emptying of bins
  • Ensure weekly collection of site rubbish and cleanliness of bin stores
  • Supervise/direct team to co-operate with external contractors for works on site

Flexibility required covering weekend duties on rotation.
