Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Sole Gardener to assist with the maintenance and future developments of the grounds and gardens for a stunning site based near Bromley.

The property is owned by a charitable organisation that has been providing residential care for over 300-years and is dedicated to maintaining beautiful gardens that contribute to their resident’s well-being and quality of life. The 5-acre site contains a wealth of diverse horticultural elements including a central quadrangle that features herbaceous borders, shrubs and bedding plants, putting lawn and fishpond. Other elements include formal lawns, box topiary, wildflowers, strip trees and raised beds.

The successful candidate will initially be based at the charity’s headquarters located only 7 miles away, so they can meet and get to know the wider horticultural team, before moving over to the other site. The substantial gardens make up much of the 11-acres at headquarters, wrapping around the various and historic buildings, instilling a relaxed and homely feel for the beneficiaries, staff and visitors alike. The award-winning gardens feature sweeping lawns, box topiary, lily pond and box parterre. Also on site is a rose garden, memorial garden, woodland walk and allotment areas which allow the residents to grow fruit and vegetables and produce honey from on-site beehives.

Reporting to the Gardens Manager, the Sole Gardener will be responsible for all aspects of garden care and ornamental horticulture as well as lawn maintenance, operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and any other horticultural duties that may arise. There is considerable scope for development of the grounds and gardens and the Gardens Manager is open to new ideas with regards to developing new areas, getting the residents involved with the gardening, operating tours and workshops etc.

The successful candidate will have excellent horticultural knowledge with a recognised horticultural qualification being highly desirable. A minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in the horticultural sector with plenty of hands-on experience, as well as a good understanding of a wide variety of landscape strategies combined with a strong knowledge of plants. A demonstratable ability to establish and sustain a good working relationship with the clients residents and horticultural team, as well as holding the initiative to work alone with excellent communication and customer service skills.
