Sole Gardener

A genuinely exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Sole Gardener to play a key role in the development and ongoing management of a private garden in rural Oxfordshire.  Kitchen gardening will be a primary focus of the role, though ornamental horticulture and garden design/development and maintenance will also play a significant part.  Applications are sought from academically qualified gardeners with excellent horticultural knowledge and experience of managing/developing large private estate gardens.  Passion, energy, discretion and importantly, a good sense of humour, are essential requirements for this role.

Set within 1000-acres of active farmland, the estate is being developed from the ground up.  The house sits on a 70-acre plot with fields of sheep and an as-yet undeveloped formal garden.  Among other features, shrubs and several beds/borders as well as a sunken garden will need to be designed and built by the Sole Gardener in collaboration with the property owners.  The property includes various ponds which offer the opportunity for creative planting and design by the successful candidate.

Following completion of the initial design and implementation of the ornamental gardens, the role will involve maintenance of these areas and any additions and improvements in line with the owner and Sole Gardener’s suggestions.

An on-site farm shop offers high quality traditionally British produce, grown in the immediately surrounding land via traditional methods.  Although a small kitchen garden (including 15 raised beds) exists at present, this will continue to grow in line with demand from the farm shop and according to any experimentation in produce diversity.  Plans are already in place to plant an orchard as well as three polytunnels, where tomatoes, chillies and other fruit and vegetables may be grown for the farm shop and the house.

Suitable candidates for this role will hold an academic horticultural qualification, ideally at RHS Level 3 or above, though applicants will not be discounted if extensive experience in each of the above areas can be demonstrated through their work history.  The Sole Gardener must have strong horticultural knowledge and time management skills with experience in a similar role; either in a position of seniority and/or responsibility as a Sole Gardener.  Excellent knowledge of and experience in kitchen gardening are required to ensure the timely production of edible fruit and vegetables throughout the seasons, with minimal waste.  Good physical fitness is essential, as is an ability to operate safely a full range of garden machinery and equipment.  Experience in species-specific pruning, seasonal garden management, basic plant pest and disease control (including that of fruit and vegetable species), is essential.  A full driving licence is required of all applicants.

The successful applicant will have genuine enthusiasm for their work, excellent technical and physical horticultural abilities, a positive and personable character and a good sense of fun.  Discretion is also important in this role as client confidentiality is of paramount importance.

As the principal gardener, applicants will need to coordinate with one junior gardener, house staff, a groom and occasional contractors.  The position is hands-on, with everyday work involving typical seasonal gardening duties such as pruning, planting, mulching, weeding, mowing, propagation etc. The role also includes more specialised tasks such as planting design, irrigation management, small arboricultural jobs (formative pruning and mulching of young trees etc.), composting of garden waste, as well as regular consultation with the owner, who is very receptive to new ideas and expertise.  As a live-in employee, candidates should also be willing and able to undertake estate security as well as occasional jobs within the wider estate, e.g. tree planting.

Experience with plant pest and disease control/treatment is required, as is experience with chainsaws (PA1/PA6 spray certificates and a chainsaw certificate; CS30/31 or similar) desired.

Suitable applicants will be positive, enthusiastic individuals with a ‘can-do’ approach.  Candidates should be non-smokers with good physical fitness and a fondness for dogs, as the three friendly house Labradors may wish to assist in the garden from time to time.  A full UK driving licence is essential.

This role is offered with a generous salary and on-site accommodation by way of an impressive and recently refurbished four-bedroom ground-floor house, located close to the main property.  The accommodation comprises an open-plan kitchen/dining room and a very large lounge with log burner, and a brand-new conservatory at the rear extending to a private garden.  Heating, power and electricity are the responsibility of the occupant.  This property is unsuitable for pets.  A standard 40-hour week is required; Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work when necessary, e.g. watering during periods of hot weather.  Holiday entitlement comprises 20-days plus bank holidays (28-days in total).  The estate is located in a rural setting amongst beautiful rolling hills, pocketed with beech woods.  Nearby towns include Henley; 3 miles, and Marlow; 8 miles away.

Skilled Gardener

Skilled Gardener required

A rare and wonderful opportunity has arisen for a qualified and experienced horticulturist to join an historic estate in west Oxfordshire.  This opening will suit a horticulturist with exceptional plant knowledge, particularly of glasshouse and border work.  The role is offered with a generous salary and first-class accommodation by way of a three-bedroom property at a significantly reduced rate of approximately £200/month, if required.

The majestic eighteenth-century country house is surrounded by parkland and pleasure gardens with stunning woodland walks, one of which leads to one of Britain’s finest water gardens.   The original walled kitchen garden remains and provides shelter to an area that exemplifies ornamental gardening through each of the four seasons.  Great expanses of lawn, large mature trees and considered ornamental planting allow the formal Italianate garden style to be highlighted further by the traditional English parkland landscape.  Specimen trees and sculptures provide perspective as the eye is drawn along avenues that culminate at a pinpoint in the distance, with undulating landscape and vistas at every turn.

A small team of skilled gardeners (full and part-time) care for the gardens with great attention to detail for the benefit of the owners and the visiting public, the latter being invited to explore the estate every other weekend between April and September each year.  This vacancy has arisen due to the current skilled horticulturist returning home to France in July, thereby leaving an opportunity for the successful applicant to be rewarded by way of generous and considerate employers in addition to the unique and spectacular gardens.

Suitable candidates for this role will hold an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or above/equivalent in addition to extensive practical experience in private estate gardens.  The focus of this role is fine horticulture, so excellent plant identification skills are essential in addition to a thorough understanding of garden management principles throughout the seasons.  As the estate is open to the public, a willingness and ability of applicants to confidently hold discussions and present to the visiting public on occasion would be a considerable advantage.  Applicants should be flexible, energetic and cooperative in nature with a positive and friendly outlook and must always be presentable.  Some experience of chemical-free garden management methodologies would be helpful, though chemicals are used in some areas of the garden at present due to the size of the estate.  As the primary focus of the position will be glasshouse work as well as management of the large borders, candidates must be competent and experienced in plant propagation.  Good physical fitness and an eye for detail are required, with an ability to work well within a team as well as alone where necessary.  During the peak of summer, watering in the glasshouse may be required over the weekend until the plant stock has been sold.  This is carried out by the team on a rota basis and will be required once in every three weekends for a total of approximately half an hour each day, typically until July.

The stated salary offering will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s level of knowledge and is offered in addition to life insurance, an 8% employer pension contribution and a heavily subsidised first-class accommodation by way of a three-bedroom property.  This is a fabulous opportunity for a skilled horticulturist to join a stunning and historic estate, and to work for genuinely warm and welcoming employers.
