Groundsman/Gardener - Live Out - EC5369

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Groundsman / Gardener to work with a two-generation family based in the Heathfield Area.

The grounds consist of two family properties adjacent to each other with two gardens covering 20 acres of land. One of the properties is well established with 1-acre of formal gardens whilst the other property is undergoing development, providing an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to get involved with an ongoing project. The grounds consist of formal gardens, paddocks, large woodland, greenhouses and numerous out buildings. On site, there are also two greenhouses, a Victorian kitchen garden with raised beds, herbaceous borders, beds, shrubs, ornamental plants and lawns.

The key responsibilities of the Groundsman/ Gardener will be the overall maintenance of the grounds including the formal gardens, paddocks and woodland. Strong knowledge and experience in ground-based tree work is required and as such, it is essential that applicants possess chainsaw certification for this role.  A key family member will assume the Head Gardener role, therefore good communications skills and a positive character are necessary.

A rare opportunity has arisen on a stunning private estate located close to Littlehampton, West Sussex, for an experienced grounds person/maintenance gardener.  This position would suit presentable and time-served maintenance gardener with demonstrable experience of working on private estate gardens.

The property spans 50-acres in total, of which 15-acres is managed as a formal garden.  Large expanses of lawn are interspersed with mature trees, areas of ornamental shrubs, potted plants/trees, herbaceous borders and sculptures.  A separate cottage is also located within the estate, with its own garden areas.  The majestic main house provides a focus for the estate, which benefits from views across the garden and to the paddocks beyond.

Two part-time gardeners ensure the ornamental planting aspect of the site is maintained on an on-going basis.  The new opening will therefore require the successful candidate to take responsibility for the general maintenance of the gardens and estate, i.e. mowing, strimming, leaf blowing, hedge cutting, pest control, weeding and other basic horticultural practices.

Applicants should have a demonstrable background in horticulture and possess a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Experience with garden maintenance equipment (including ride-on mowers) is essential, as is the ability to manage your own time efficiently.  Academic horticultural qualifications are beneficial but not essential, as are spray certificates (PA1/PA6).  Candidates must be presentable, positive in their approach to the job at hand, physically fit, and be able to apply excellent attention to detail at all times.

In return for your commitment to the role and the estate, an hourly rate of pay is offered; £11.67/hr over a 40 hour week, with a statutory pension scheme.  Seasonal variation in work hours may apply during periods of very hot or cold weather, for example, as expected.

Head Gardener (Live out) - EC4884 - This position has been filled

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener to manage a 4-acre garden on an historic private estate.  The role would suit a dedicated and enthusiastic plants person with excellent organisational and staff management skills, interest in organic gardening and an observant eye for detail.

Set in the heart of a 3,500-acre rewilding project in West Sussex, this historic property has been inhabited by the same family for over 200 years.  The stunning 1.5-acre topiary garden around the house, designed by Georgia Langton, sits above a ha-ha, and beautifully echoes the shapes and tones of the wider landscape. Cloud-clipped box and yew create free-form Henry Moore-style shapes around standard hornbeam, holly and cloud-pruned box trees, with straight yew hedges providing structure. A patch of the lawn is managed for wildflowers, and the pebble paths around the house flower with forget-me-nots, creeping thyme, alpine Alchemillaerigeron, wild strawberries, violets and alliums.

Leading from the topiary garden is a 1.36-acre Victorian walled garden, half of which is devoted to fruit, vegetables and flowers for the house. A greenhouse provides year-round salads; summer tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, peppers, aubergines and chillies etc, and potted plants for the house. Raised vegetable beds provide a wide range of produce on a year-round basis, and the herbaceous beds are planted with architectural edibles such as sea kale, rhubarb and artichokes. Cutting beds contain roses, dahlias, sweet peas and peonies etc. for the house, and the fruit cage; raspberries, loganberries, red and black currants, pots of blueberries and wall-trained peaches.

A grass acacia walk, bordered by a beech hedge and punctuated with mop-head acacias, leads to the other half of the walled garden with a croquet lawn and Mediterranean-style swimming pool garden featuring cypress, olive trees, extensive lavender beds and two loggia shaded by grape vines, roses and honeysuckle. Outside the walled garden, a restored orchard has been planted with apples, pears, plums and medlars. The walls of the Victorian walled garden support clambering roses and clematis, and the walls of the main house and associated buildings feature impressive stretches of wisteria, as well as climbing roses, clematis and vines, which are clipped using a cherry-picker. The topiary theme is continued in a small patch of garden at the front of the house and by the Estate Office.

In keeping with the ethos of the rewilding project, the entire garden is managed organically and planted to attract pollinating insects. Control of pests is managed through use of nematodes and judicious planting and crop management.  The garden is open to the public at least once a year and for occasional charity events and visiting groups.

Applicants for this role must share the owners’ passion for the garden and its ‘green’ ethos, such that they are able to present themselves as an ambassador for a non-chemical regime of gardening through the occasional delivery of garden talks and guided tours. There may be opportunities to increase public engagement with the garden and, perhaps, in conjunction with the rewilding project safaris, run workshops on ‘gardens for pollinating insects’, ‘organic vegetable gardening’, ‘managing orchards’, and scrumping days for locals, for example.

The successful applicant will be required to efficiently manage one part-time under gardener and a two-day/week WRAGS trainee, and contractors who may be brought in for mowing, hedge-cutting, path maintenance in the walled garden, the improvement and maintenance of the croquet lawn (which will become the focus of family croquet tournament) and pruning the climbers around the walls of the main house. It is important that the gardens are presented and maintained to the highest standard at all times.

Applicants for this opportunity should possess excellent horticultural knowledge and demonstrable experience in the management of each of the above features. Candidates should have experience of garden management, health and safety knowledge from a training and practical aspect, experience of supervising staff and maintaining tools and machinery.  Excellent time and staff management skills are essential as is a good level of physical fitness and the willingness to lead by example.

The Head Gardener will be required to set up and manage nursery propagating facilities to provide plants for the garden as well as some plants and cut flowers for the house.  The position is full-time and will require some weekend work during the summer. The Head Gardener will be encouraged to discuss new ideas with the owners. There are no non-horticultural duties required of the Head Gardener in this role.

The position is a wide and varied role with great scope for personal and professional in-house development.

Set in 100 acres of parkland, the impressive gardens provide a complimentary frame for the historic building itself.  Future development of the gardens will be considered following successful appointment of a suitable Skilled Gardener; an acre of Victorian walled-garden, new glass house, as well as the development of other innovative business plans such as educational programs, veg/flower sales, arts exhibitions, music events and promotion of the estate’s vineyard tour.  The estate owners also have opened the garden/arboretum to the public in the past for national/international specialist groups and charitable fund raising events, and would like to do so again should the new Skilled Gardener demonstrate the capacity and willingness to contribute to such events in future.

You should be a practical hands-on gardener; able to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery such as mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters.  Good practical experience and/or an entry level qualification in gardens and/or landscape management is desired (e.g. a Level 1 or 2 qualification in Horticulture).  Applicants should have a keen interest in gardens and landscapes and be willing to work alongside and support other estate staff and volunteers.  You should be well motivated with a keen eye for detail, a desire to achieve high standards and an ability to work on your own initiative.  The successful applicant will be expected to assist with preparations of events in general as well as ensuring that the garden is presentable at all times.
