Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Topiary Specialist to join the horticultural team at a prestigious private estate/garden. The successful candidate will take the lead in maintaining and developing the estate’s extensive and mature collection of topiary, hedging, and formal plant structures to the highest horticultural and aesthetic standards.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out precise trimming, shaping, and maintenance of a wide range of topiary, including traditional forms, cloud pruning, pleached trees, and formal hedging (e.g. yew, box, hornbeam, beech).
- Maintain the overall health and vigour of the plants through appropriate feeding, pruning, pest/disease control, and seasonal care.
- Plan and execute topiary development projects, including training young plants, repairing damaged structures, and enhancing existing designs.
- Use and maintain a range of hand tools and powered equipment with care and precision, ensuring safety and high-quality results.
- Work closely with the Head Gardener to ensure the topiary reflects the vision and style of the garden.
- Assist with wider garden maintenance tasks when required, particularly in formal areas of the grounds.
- Support and train junior staff or volunteers in the correct techniques and care of topiary if needed.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience and expertise in topiary work, ideally within a high-end private garden or similar environment.
- Excellent plant knowledge, particularly of species commonly used in formal design and topiary work.
- Strong attention to detail and an artistic eye for proportion, symmetry, and structure.
- Confident using hand shears, topiary clippers, ladders, and electric/petrol-powered hedge trimmers safely and efficiently.
- Good physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- A methodical, patient approach with pride in producing fine horticultural work.
- A relevant horticultural qualification is desirable but not essential with sufficient practical experience.

Position Overview
Our client is looking for a reliable and experienced Tree Surgeon (Arborist) to join a small but busy team. The tree surgeon will be working with 100-year-old redwood trees and therefore will require a specialised set of skills, combined with arboricultural knowledge and technical climbing and safety expertise. Due to the height and age of redwoods, the tree surgeon must be proficient in rope access and canopy climbing techniques, as well as understand the structural biology of mature trees to assess stability and identify disease or decay without causing harm. The job involves all aspects of tree work – from pruning and shaping to full removals – always with a strong focus on safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
Tree Maintenance & Care
- Inspect trees to assess health, structure, and potential hazards.
- Climbing, pruning, and removing trees of all sizes.
- Carrying out crown reductions, thinning, and shaping.
- Felling trees safely, either in one piece or dismantling in sections.
- Using chainsaws, woodchippers, stump grinders, and climbing gear.
- Spotting tree health issues (disease, pests, decay) and helping decide the best action.
- Keeping the site safe, tidy, and leaving a good finish for the customer.
- Working closely with ground staff to get jobs done efficiently.

- Strong knowledge of tree biology, diseases, and modern arboricultural practices.
- Competence in using chainsaws, stump grinders, rigging equipment, and climbing gear.
- Physical fitness and ability to work at heights in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent risk assessment and problem-solving skills.
- Full, clean UK driving licence (HGV licence an advantage).

Our client is a well-established landscaping firm with over 40 years of experience in the commercial and residential sectors, specialising in large-scale projects. Based in Surrey, the company offers a wide range of landscaping services, including soft landscaping, grounds maintenance, and specialist environmental work such as tree surgery. With a focus on commercial construction, their portfolio includes high-profile projects such as hospitals and major residential developments. They also operate a dedicated nursery for contract growing and containerisation services. The company prides itself on delivering quality, safety, and competitive pricing, with a strong commitment to maintaining health and safety standards across all operations.
Role Overview:
As a Site Supervisor, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the day-to-day management of operations on-site, primarily focusing on soft landscaping. The successful candidate will serve as an essential link between the Contract Managers and the on-site teams, ensuring projects are delivered to the highest standards, while maintaining a strong focus on health, safety, and environmental compliance.
The successful candidate will also oversee key logistical and administrative tasks, ensuring the smooth running of site activities, as well as assisting in the effective delivery of project programmes and procurement plans.
Predominantly site based, this role offers the opportunity to grow and progress within the company. The hours are 08:00am – 16:00pm.
Key Responsibilities:
Contract Management
- Oversee daily on-site operations, primarily focused on soft-landscaping, acting as a critical liaison between the Contract Managers and site teams.
- Ensure strict adherence to company Health and Safety as well as Environmental standards.
- Assist Contract Managers in developing, updating, and executing project programmes and procurement plans.
- Manage administrative tasks such as collating site paperwork (e.g., delivery notes), verifying deliveries against orders, completing daily site diaries, attending daily site briefings, and conducting regular health and safety checks.
- Ensure project sites are clean, well-protected, and free from any damage caused by others.
- Supervise more complex site tasks, ensuring all works are completed to the required standards and tolerances, including the accurate setting-out of works from technical plans.
Commercial Management
- Identify and communicate any potential variations or additional works to Contract Managers that could add value without compromising quality.
- Assist in the pricing and execution of additional works, ensuring these are processed promptly upon receipt of a Valued Instruction.
- Manage the fleet of vehicles and machinery used by Team Leaders, including collecting mileage and machinery usage reports and coordinating maintenance with the Asset Register.
- Conduct regular van inspections (monthly), perform PPE and hand tool inventory checks, and arrange for restocking as required. Ensure Team Leaders are aware that any losses may result in charges.
Requirements:
- Possession of a valid CSCS card and other relevant industry certifications.
- Solid understanding of commercial landscaping and operational planning.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety practices.
- Proficiency in IT and digital tools for managing contract information and project schedules.
- Proven leadership and team management experience.
- Highly organised, with the ability to plan profitable projects efficiently.
- Ambitious and a desire to grow and progress in a leadership role within the landscaping industry.
