Overview

The role will include elements of customer service/stock movement and management/retail work.  You'll be part of a team delivering exemplary customer service at all times. The successful candidate will be involved in the day to day running of this successful garden centre. With responsibilities including but not limited to – driving sales, tilling up, making sure the plant area is kept clean and tidy, helping with ordering, arranging customer deliveries, and leading the team by example.

The Ideal Candidate

This role is ideal for someone with experience in a commercial nursery background or has knowledge within the horticulture sector.  In addition, you will have exceptional customer service skills and an ability to act quickly to changing priorities, workload and concepts.

This role sits within the Forest Research Technical Services Unit (TSU) which provides a capacity to conduct field work across Great Britain. Through a network of field stations and two nursery facilities which work in close co-operation, the TSU provides a wide range of specialist technical skills and knowledge to support the work of the science centres within Forest Research and on behalf of other customers, Forestry Commission, Forestry and Land Scotland, Natural Resources Wales and other external clients.

TSU also provides local contact and liaison between Forest Research (FR) and networks of regional Forestry Commission (FC) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) staff, partner organisations and private woodland owners and managers.

Job description

The Technical Services Unit at Alice Holt’s Research Station are looking to appoint a nursery manager on a three-year fixed term appointment. The purpose of the job is to take the lead in the management and development of high-quality FR nursery facilities at Alice Holt which consist of an intensive nursery facility at the Research Station and a nearby extensive outdoor facility at Headley.  There may also be occasional opportunities to assist with TSU fieldwork. Liaising with FR project leaders, the nursery manager will deliver the nursery services required to underpin their research projects as well as identifying opportunities for development of future nursery work. The successful candidate’s key work areas will be:

 Managing the nursery facilities:

  • Manage agreed budgeted work programmes, occasional staff members and growth facilities to provide a high-quality horticultural service that meets the needs of our clients
  • Oversee the maintenance of the site, identifying seasonal work required
  • Achieve efficient use of nursery resources in all areas of work through planning and efficient management balancing quality and cost effectiveness
  • Care for the plants in the nursery, carrying out watering, weeding and pest control as required
  • Propagate or source plants required for research projects
  • Ensure that work complies with FR’s health and safety, quality assurance (QA) and ISO14001 environmental management standards

Developing future nursery capacity:

  • In collaboration with FR project leaders, you will seek to develop new work utilising the nursery facilities and identify potential new equipment / infrastructure / skills required to support this
  • With TSU management and colleagues in FR facilities, prepare business cases for new investment
  • Assist with the delivery of any agreed investment plans

 Building capability in the nursery team:

  • Share your horticultural skills and experience with members of the TSU team based at Alice Holt so that they can assist with nursery work where necessary; either during peaks of workload, weekend cover or periods of leave / sickness absence
  • Identify development/ training opportunities for staff working in the nursery

 The post requires attention to detail, good record keeping and flexibility in terms of working hours and weekend working as required to care for the plants growing within the nurseries.

Essential Criteria

 Horticultural qualification to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent experience

  • Demonstrable experience of plant propagation, care and maintenance work
  • Demonstrable experience of managing glass houses and polytunnel structures including environmental control and irrigation systems
  • Demonstrable experience of working safely whilst undertaking horticultural work including competent use of risk assessments and COSHH assessments
  • Literacy Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. GCSE, NVQ, Key Skills, Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate, Scottish National Certificate level 5)*
  • Numeracy Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience (e.g. GCSE, NVQ, Key Skills, Welsh Baccalaureate Intermediate, Scottish National Certificate level 5)*
  • Competent IT user with experience of the Microsoft Office suite
  • An ability to work flexibly altering working day pattern where necessary

Desirable Criteria

 Experience of managing staff and contractors

Assistant Gardener

A rare and exciting opportunity has become available for an Assistant Gardener to join an incredible private estate that is going through a monumental restoration of the buildings, gardens and grounds. The position is a full time and permanent role and is based in Surrey.

The 500-acre grounds are entirely new, based loosely on the historic gardens that were lost in the 1960’s. The grounds have been designed to consist of garden areas, a few of those areas are as follows; Forecourt with formal parterre planting beds with hedges and a topiary yew centrepiece surrounded by close cut formal lawns. These beds are intended to have a changing display of bulbs and annual flowering plants to provide year-round interest and will require careful maintenance and regular replanting with the gardeners either ordering in or propagating and growing on the required plants. The grotto entrance will be surrounded by coniferous trees planted to create woodland clump when viewed from the park. Shrub and herbaceous planting above the grotto to frame the sculpture/urn here. The garden walk will be an elegant repeat of shrub and herbaceous ground including planting around the outsides of the garden terrace. The Southern walk becomes part of the Garden terrace with a seat looking back towards the south wing.

The Kitchen Terrace and Pool Terrace planting will be in entirely in large timber planters. Small clipped standard trees surrounded with seasonal annuals. Both terraces will have the same layout, but the Pool terrace is in the shade of the house for much of the day whereas the Kitchen Terrace is mostly in full sunlight. The walled garden will be divided into a quartered layout with a gravel paths on the cross axis and around the perimeter walls. The central area will be a simple meadow and fruit trees with feature arbours in each quadrant. A new glasshouse will be built to accommodate house plants, seedlings and tender plants. Applicants for this position will possess previous professional experience in hands-on gardening.  Suitable candidates will preferably hold a suitable horticultural qualification and have extensive knowledge of plants combined with good all-round practical skills in craft gardening.  Applicants must be physically fit and must be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery. The successful applicant will work under the guidance and supervision of the Head Gardener and within a team of four but must also be able to work efficiently on their own as required.

The position is a 5-day working week but may vary when family are in residence or through busy periods, a watering rota for weekends is in place. An excellent full time and permanent opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener / groundskeeper with a passion for lawn care and garden maintenance to work within the beautiful gardens of a private estate in North Surrey.

The private estate encompasses 13 acres of land, which includes a 9-acre modern garden designed by a renowned contemporary landscape and garden designer. The garden contains formal lawns with wild meadow grass sections and grass herbaceous borders. Set out geometrically, the garden also contains extensive hedging made up of Yew, Beech and Box, with a stream to one side of the garden and woodland / parkland on the other.

The successful candidate will be fully responsible for the estate’s lawn care, which equates to approximately 40% of the extensive grounds. Separated into wild meadow and high standard lawn, in addition the estate includes formal lawns up to a bowling green standard. You will be reporting into the head gardener and join him along with one other team member as custodians of the grounds, working as part of the small gardening and maintenance team ensuring the lawns are kept to the highest standards throughout the seasons, aligning with the estate owner’s requirements.

It will be the responsibility of the gardener / groundskeeper to ensure all turf care is maintained and well kept, including mowing lawns, treating, feeding, fertilising and when necessary, assisting the rest of the team with their duties. Both formal lawns are fully irrigated thus an understanding and knowledge of the maintenance and operation of irrigation systems would be beneficial. Duties will vary naturally throughout the seasons and will include leaf collection and clearing snow. Other responsibilities may include planting, watering, transplanting, controlling diseases, insects, and weeds.

The ideal candidate will have had experience in all aspects of lawncare; could be from or working within a greenkeeping environment; a non-smoker with a keen eye for details, meticulous in the maintenance of high standards, taking pride in their work, reliable and able to work with complete discretion.

Responsibilities will include ensuring that all formal borders, shrub beds and lawn areas are kept to a high standard, oversee the management and seasonal maintenance of the vegetable garden as well as general grounds maintenance including planting, pruning, weeding, strimming, clearing leaves, and watering. As well as ensuring pots and window boxes are watered, fed, clean and well presented.

The Senior gardener will occasionally be required to assist at the principal’s other property in London from time to time. Overall additional duties may also include caring for the house plants, ensuring they are watered, deadheaded, clean and well presented. Compost bay management and mulching maintenance as well as create budgets and place orders for tools, plant, and other necessary equipment. A good understanding of Health and Safety is important to comply with health and safety legislation and safe working practices.  

Applicants will have Horticulture Level 2, or 5 years working in a horticultural environment coupled with sound knowledge of standard horticultural practices (planting, pruning, fertilising, etc.), growth characteristics and identification of a wide variety of plants as well as good practical skills in soft landscaping and grounds maintenance. A practical knowledge of indoor plants and their presentation as well as pond maintenance would be an advantage. The gardener will be physically fit, have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills as well as good written and verbal communication skills. Experience with a range of machinery skills including use of strimmers, leaf blowers, mowers and tractors etc. is required. A driving licence is essential.

This opportunity would suit an enthusiastic, self-motivated and knowledgeable gardener with experience working on a private garden and understands sensitivity of working within a private estate and household.

SALARY:        £30,000 – 35,000 DOE
