Head Gardener
An opportunity of a Head Gardener’s lifetime has arisen in Gloucestershire for an ambitious and creative client, on a project that will allow the successful candidate to create their legacy. This is a long-term collaborative venture between the owner, Chelsea Gold Medallist designer, and the new Head Gardener. This is a full-time permanent role and will suit Head Gardeners or a deputy Head Gardener with the drive and hunger to be a key part of an exciting and extensive garden project development.
With the aim of being ‘the jewel in the Cotswolds crown,’ this garden development project is being spearheaded by a respected garden designer and now requires the input of a talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener. The position is offered with a generous salary and on-site accommodation.
The 75-acre parkland estate is of a Capability Brown style in a varied landscape with woodland, a lake, paddocks, and undulating topography throughout. The main house is undergoing refurbishment and improvement, such that the new owner expects to move into the building in 2023. The garden/grounds design is complete, with implementation to commence by late summer, preferably with the new Head Gardener in position and ready to play a leading role. Accommodation will be provided from the outset but may be temporary to allow the on-site cottage to be refurbished, ready for the Head Gardener to move in.
The Head Gardener’s role will initially involve horticultural input and project management, including that of contractors, whilst liaising with the garden designer and the owner. Initial work will involve some ground-based tree work such as clearing, thinning and planting, restoration of existing hedges and improvement of the formal garden area. Following implementation of the design, the role will involve management and maintenance of the gardens to include an orchard, numerous trees (including extensive new planting), a rose garden, a 2-acre formal garden, 5-acre wildflower area with bulbs, a 3-acre lake with island planting to commence following dredging and shaping. The owner has an interest in rewilding, thereby providing an opportunity for a knowledgeable Head Gardener to implement sustainable management methodologies on the estate.
The Head Gardener will initially be the sole gardener on the estate; however, an assistant will be required in due course which will allow the Head Gardener responsibility for sourcing and hiring for this purpose. Additional seasonal staff may also be required as the garden nears completion and as the maintenance requirements increase.
Applicants for this role must be physically fit, hands-on Head Gardeners at a high level with project management/development experience in a similar setting, i.e., on large country estates with a high diversity of horticulture and landscape features. Garden staff and contractor management experience is desirable but not essential. The management of health and safety considerations in relation to large landscape/garden development projects and associated staff is a requirement. Strong ornamental plant knowledge is essential, as is an ability to carry out species-specific pruning, soil treatment/management, pest and disease control and the safe operation and basic maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery. An academic horticultural qualification at RHS level 3 or equivalent/above is desired, as is the ability to operate a chainsaw safely, though the latter will not discount otherwise suitable applicants as training can be provided. Applicants with landscape management experience in addition to extensive horticultural knowledge are encouraged to apply.
This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a talented and highly experienced Head Gardener to make their mark on a project designed to impress. The resulting estate will be a legacy for the owner, designer and the new Head Gardener.

Senior Gardener
Senior Gardener required
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable gardener to play a leading role on a beautiful, historic, Arts and Crafts garden near Cirencester. This position would suit a qualified and knowledgeable hands-on gardener with experience at senior level.
The private estate is open to the public at certain times of the year and (during a normal year) attracts approximately 8000 visitors per year, however the family aims to increase this significantly in the future. The property is privately owned and has remained in the same family since its construction in the early 20th century, with the fourth generation now enjoying the estate and playing an active and hands-on role in its maintenance and development. The estate plays host to a small number of events each year.
Set within a small rural village and surrounded by agricultural fields and paddocks, the estate comprises an impressive main building of Cotswold stone with formal gardens extending to 8-acres. The gardens follow a traditional formal English manor house style with generous planting of yew and box topiary, extensive hedging, herbaceous borders, planters, a variety of shrubs, native and exotic tree species, manicured lawns and climbing wisteria. A walled garden is currently undergoing renovation.
The gardens are currently managed by two part-time gardeners, apprentices and volunteers. A requirement therefore exists for a new Senior Gardener to take the lead on garden management and development, which will involve working closely with the owners.
The ideal candidate will possess suitable academic horticultural qualifications as well as extensive hands-on garden management experience on private estates. Applicants must have good knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices, species-specific pruning techniques and the ability to manage a garden budget, supervise part-time gardeners, volunteers and contractors with diplomacy and positivity in order to ensure a happy and effective team. Experience of creating and maintaining topiary, mixed borders, lawns, kitchen gardening and plant propagation, is essential. Applicants must be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery, with spray certificates (PA1/PA6) desirable. This is a hands-on role that requires dedication, excellent time management and good physical fitness.
The Senior Gardener role will primarily involve working with the owners to develop the garden as both a private residence and visitor attraction, by way of maintaining excellent standards of presentation throughout the year. As a key player on the estate, informal conversations with visitors about the garden will be expected, as well as developing towards conducting tours of the garden to groups of visitors. Applicants should therefore be positive in their approach, confident in character and should find enjoyment and reward in passing on their expertise to visitors and colleagues alike.
