Job Description:
The successful candidate will work on their own initiative and organise themselves to deliver an effective service delivery including:
- Analysing clients BOQs and technical specifications
- Extracting information from tender drawings including taking off quantities both manually and using IT software
- Compiling bills of quantities
- Collating quotations to calculate materials, equipment and labour costs
- Liaising with clients, suppliers and subcontractors
- Utilising several computing packages and online tendering portals
- Preparing and submitting compliant tenders to meet required deadlines
- Liaising with other parts of the business to assist in the handover of projects
- Following up on tender submissions, monitoring and updating the tender index and compiling reports for senior management

An experienced and talented Head Gardener is sought to play a leading role on a stunning 80-acre estate located in Ascot, Berkshire. This position would suit a proactive, committed hands-on Head Gardener with demonstrable experience in all aspects of garden and staff management. The client is offering accommodation for the successful applicant, if required, in addition to a generous salary in line with experience.
The Head Gardener will be responsible for managing the 13-strong garden team; overseeing day-to-day garden management and maintenance operations, as well as for providing horticultural training for all team members. Applicants must be friendly, hard-working, trustworthy and honest, with common sense, initiative, and a positive character. Due to the nature of the private estate, the Head Gardener must be discreet and respectful of the family’s privacy when in residence.
This Grade II listed property is part of the Crown Estate and includes approximately 60-acres of Grade I listed gardens. The estate is privately owned and is not open to the public but is meticulously cared for by the dedicated team of gardeners. The Head Gardener will be responsible for ensuring all the gardens and grounds on the estate and surrounding family-owned properties are maintained to the highest possible standard. This will include hands-on management of the lawns, tennis courts, swimming pool area, lake area, rose garden, fountain garden and greenhouse, as well as supervision and direction of the garden team and management of the garden budget. The Head Gardener will be required to manage contractors when on site and to work alongside various garden designers where necessary. A report will be required, with photographs, to present to the family on a monthly basis with regard to progress and development within the garden.
Applicants for this role should hold extensive experience at Head Gardener level as well as an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above. Suitable applicants will have demonstrable experience of garden staff management on horticulturally diverse privately-owned estates and must have excellent plant knowledge. The Head Gardener must have a strong knowledge of a full range of garden features, including kitchen gardening, roses, specialist pruning techniques and seasonal garden management considerations, plant propagation and cut flowers, with competence in managing house plants. The Head Gardener will report to and will work alongside, the Operations Manager, particularly with regard to special events at the estate.

The young and welcoming family spend the working week in the city and return to the property most weekends. Due to the relocation of the current Head Gardener to another part of the country, a new full-time Head Gardener is required on a permanent, full-time basis.
The relatively young gardens have been designed by the reputable and award-winning designer Arne Maynard, and consist of two acres of mature trees, herbaceous borders, climbing roses, drifts of flowering shrubs as well as impressive herb and vegetable gardens. As a very recent addition, the neighbouring property is now under the ownership of the client, so a new garden project will be underway in the near future. The new property will require the successful applicant to manage an assistant gardener when the time comes, i.e. following implementation of the new design, as well as the combined gardens as a whole. The position requires a highly organised individual with a good eye for detail and experience of managing high-end private estate gardens. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the garden in conjunction with the property owner and the garden designer on a permanent basis.
Applications are encouraged from Head Gardeners with excellent plant care knowledge, including that of pest and disease management / Integrated Pest Management. IPM is a significant part of horticulture and arboriculture in the USA and as such, applicants must have a good working knowledge of this aspect of garden management. Typical Head Gardener duties will apply, i.e. management of contractors and grounds crews where applicable, seasonal garden planning, equipment operation/maintenance and hands-on gardening to a high standard.
Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at degree level or equivalent, at least eight years’ practical experience in private estate gardens, excellent horticultural knowledge, a chemical applicator’s licence (or the ability to obtain one in the first 90 days of employment), with a clean and valid New York driver’s licence and the legal ability to work in the United States being desirable. Experience with digital data collection applications and programs is therefore required of all applicants for this role.
