Head Gardener

A rare and exciting and opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to play a leading role in the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of a beautiful estate, located at the foot of the Austrian Alps.  The role will involve day-to-day hands-on gardening, leadership and supervision of two Assistant Gardeners and to identify the requirement for additional assistance as required.  Applicants must speak fluent German to be considered for this role.

The successful candidate must be happy to work with the owners and a Landscape Architect to enhance and develop the garden.  This role will suit an experienced garden manager with strong leadership skills, excellent horticultural knowledge and desire to take on a dynamic garden on a permanent full-time basis.  The position is offered with on-site accommodation in addition to a salary as stated below.

The impressive traditional Austrian castle estate is rurally located and set within conifer woodland.  The 3-acre formal gardens comprise a variety of ornamental areas with a parterre, hedges, mature and young native and ornamental trees, expansive lawns and mixed beds/borders.  The Head Gardener will work alongside a Landscape Architect on the designing of new areas, for which competence in plant use and function will be required.  Applicants must have strong horticultural knowledge, good physical fitness and a constructive approach to the supervision of assistant gardeners.

Due to the climate in the region, a heavy covering of snow is likely each winter.  Applicants must therefore be happy to take their annual holidays within this period where possible, as although some indoor plant work will remain during winter, the garden workload will be comparatively light during this time.

Accommodation is offered with this role in addition to the salary and will take into account the successful candidate’s personal circumstances in terms of property size.  Rent is covered by the employer, with utility bills remaining the responsibility of the postholder.  As the garden team and some external contractors do not have good comprehension of the English language, and due to the administration requirements of the role, the Head Gardener must be fluent in spoken and written German to be considered by the client.
