They will oversee the digital data collection (tree inspection programs and associated tree work), ensure compliance of all Health and Safety legislation and requirements in accordance with current Health and Safety at work and other relevant legislation.  It is paramount that the Gardens Manager captures the health and safety inspections using a digital data collection system. Experience with digital data collection applications and programs is therefore required of all applicants for this role. Sole Gardener - Live Out - EC5831 - This position has now been filled

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to manage and develop a new garden in Woodstock, Oxfordshire.  The successful applicant will be based at the Oxfordshire property for four days per week but will also take responsibility for the owner’s garden in Holland Park, London, on a one-day per week basis.  Suitable applicants will have excellent horticultural skills, a proven ability to manage a private garden autonomously and the ability to work with associated Landscape Architects with regard to garden development.

The main garden, based in Oxfordshire, comprises 3.5-acres and is being created in two phases.  The first phase is due for completion summer 2019 and will include a large walled garden with lawns and mixed borders, a swimming pool, cricket net and lawns, a small orchard, with planting adjacent to the house.  There is approximately 1-acre of mature woodland that requires basic management.  

The second phase of development, due to be completed 2020-21, comprises formal gardens with expansive formal lawns, mixed borders, box hedging, with surrounding mature trees and hedges.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a gardener at senior level to apply their horticultural skills and creative eye from a plant-use and design perspective, as well as to utilise any hard and soft landscaping skills.

The successful applicant will be required to manage an additional garden, located in Holland Park, London, on a one day per week basis.  This formal garden measures approximately 1200m2 and comprises topiary, lawns, beds and climbing plants.  

Applicants must have demonstrable experience of working as a Senior/Sole Gardener on private estates to be considered for this position.  The ability to work with Landscape Architects, other consultants and landscape contractors is essential.  Applicants must have excellent communication skills, the ability to plan and implement projects, excellent attention to detail, organisational skills and be self-motivated as they will be working largely by themselves once the garden is completed. 

As the Sole Gardener, excellent plant knowledge and creative use of plants is required, as is an ability to maintain the garden to a high standard, maintain excellent standards of health and safety, operate garden machinery and to adhere to the aims of the client.  A proven ability and understanding of turf management is also necessary.

Suitable candidates should hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above and/or extensive experience at Senior/Sole Gardener level on horticulturally-diverse private estates.  Candidates with a background, qualifications and/or experience in garden design (in addition to hands-on garden management) are also encouraged to apply.  Possession of spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial.  The successful applicant will be expected to liaise with the Landscape Architect team and property owners on a regular basis in order to assure continued and efficient implementation of garden renovations, and of day-to-day maintenance.

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced hands-on gardens manager to take responsibility for two crematoriums and seven members of staff in the NW11 and N2 areas of London.  This role would suit an experienced gardener with good horticultural knowledge, a diplomatic management style and an ability to provide excellent customer service.

The two sites, of 12 acres and 10 acres respectively, are located within approximately 2-miles of each other in north West London.  The sites are managed by one team of 7 gardeners for whom the successful applicant will be responsible on a full-time permanent basis. 

Applicants for this role should have good horticultural knowledge and extensive experience of managing teams of garden staff in a commercial or private setting.  The ideal applicant will hold spray certificates as well as a recognised academic horticultural qualification and good physical fitness.  Applicants should be able to demonstrate a history of budget management, staff management, a full UK driving licence, extensive experience with gardening equipment operation and maintenance, and an instinctive ability to work to excellent standards of health and safety at all times.  An ability to be diplomatic and calculated is necessary when dealing with team members, members of the public, and other departments associated with the company.  Applicants must have a keen desire to pass on their knowledge to the garden staff at every opportunity to ensure continued development, upskilling and efficiency of the team.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for the daily management of the gardens and public areas, including the car parks, and to delegate and take part in the daily duties as required.  Consideration to seasonal garden management requirements must be given at all times, with initiative applied with respect to the development and enhancement of the grounds.

The successful applicant will ensure the most cost effective and best use/deployment of the gardening team and equipment across both sites.  He/she must ensure full, daily and timely use of the BOS (Business Operating System) in relation to the department.

General and additional responsibilities of the successful applicant are as follows:

  • To organise the purchasing of supplies and equipment and associated paperwork as required.
  • To liaise with external contractors when relevant in relation to works being carried out at either site.
  • To manage a gardens complaints system, liaising with clients and colleagues as necessary.
  • To participate in the compilation, control and operation of an annual budget, including materials, equipment, training and overtime.

  • To be aware of and manage health and safety matters relating to the department, including the use of garden equipment and the storage and use of garden chemicals and fuels. In addition, advise on and implement where necessary legislation pertaining to health and safety, particularly hazardous substances (COSHH).
  • To ensure that all equipment and premises relating to the department are secure at all times.
  • To ensure that the departments staff welfare facilities are always kept clean and tidy to a set and agreed standard.
  • To carry out any reasonable requests or instruction for the better fulfilment of duties, and at all times to behave and act in a manner befitting the position held and the nature of the company’s business activities.

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener/ Grounds Manager to play a leading role in the development, maintenance and management of an established garden and associated staff.  As part of the management team, the role also encompasses aspects of the wider estate grounds.  This impressive and unique country destination provides multiple service offerings to valued guests, each of whom visit the site to indulge in fine food, high-end accommodation and relaxation at the hand of true professionals in their respective field.  This is a ‘land to table’ operation and as such, applicants with an interest in food production are encouraged to apply.

As the successful candidate, you will work under the direction of the General Manager and the business/estate owner to oversee all outdoor areas of the estate.  You primarily will be responsible for the garden team, farm workers, volunteers, contractors and the direction of consultants.

On a horticultural front, the Garden and Grounds Manager will be responsible for border maintenance, plant propagation, growing on and planting a wide range of plants, pruning (including fruit trees), kitchen garden production (in association with the Head Kitchen Gardener), woodland and meadow maintenance and conservation.  A private garden encompasses 4-5 acres, with and additional 4-5 acres in meadows to be managed.  The role will require the care of poultry and sheep alongside a Farm Manager, and assistance with other duties that may be necessary to ensure the smooth running of the estate. Applicants should be willing and able to deliver informative talks about the gardens and the overall business to guests and other members of the public where necessary.

The successful applicant will lead and contribute to major projects including garden design and development, farm development, and will oversee some of the ongoing projects whilst ensuring the garden maintenance team continue to work to a high standard.  As the Garden and Grounds Manager, you will also be required to ensure systems are in place to safeguard the smooth running of departments and that each department is managed cost effectively and is profitable.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team in a hands-on capacity as well as from a managerial perspective.  You will be required to demonstrate and train staff in the use of a range of garden machinery; tractors, quad bikes, mowers, strimmers, blowers, hedge cutters etc. and oversee the associated servicing and maintenance schedules. 

Applicants must have an understanding of environmentally sensitive practices, organic growing, pest and disease management (including pesticide usage in certain areas).  The estate play host to ducks and hens, so applicants with knowledge of poultry management are encouraged to apply.  Excellent communication skills, a passion for horticulture and the outdoors, attention to detail and self-motivation are essential qualities necessary for this role. 

Candidates for this position should have a relevant academic horticultural qualification and a good understanding of Health and Safety Regulations, as well as demonstrable experience of gardening at Head or Senior level.  Candidates must be physically fit and capable of heavy lifting and may be from a private estates and/or commercial background.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and certification of chainsaw competence are desirable.  A full UK driving licence is essential.

You will deputise for, and assist the Group Manager in meeting the requirements of current legislation and develop, implement, manage and monitor new initiatives to improve the performance of the Green Care Section.

You must possess a recognised managerial qualification to at least NQF level 5, and a NQF level 4 Certificate in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent qualification. You will have at least 5 years practical experience working in an amenity grounds maintenance environment with 3 years’ experience of managing a front line workforce within a competitive framework. You will also be competent in ICT skills including MS Office applications and working with databases. Some Arboricultural experience would also be beneficial in carrying out this role.

You must have the ability to communicate at all levels, be able to work to deadlines and targets, design and implement management plans and work schedules and have a flexible approach to your work. You must have a current full driving licence.
