Job Description

With a hands-on approach, you will lead an established retail team and need to be comfortable taking people on the journey with you. You will play a key role in sourcing and developing ranges, merchandising and stock management. You will ensure brand compliance and lead on future projections and business planning and work collaboratively with the property portfolio leadership team to inform & implement strategy. 

You will be responsible for the successful operational delivery of the garden centre, leading the garden centre retail team to drive performance, ensure compliance, maximise profit and deliver best in class service. You will ensure the operation reflects the organisations values and is an integral part of the property’s visitor experience. You will effectively stock and merchandise products to achieve stretching financial targets, maximise income and profitability.

The key responsibilities for this position are:

  • Delivery of sales performance of up to £2m. Buying responsibility up to £1m.

  • Responsible for developing and delivering the retail plan, ensuring compliance with all controls, policies and procedures.

  • Identify and grow new and effective revenue streams.

Key Skills & Experience

The successful candidate must have experience of managing large teams with a proven track record of performance leadership and the ability to analyse issues by holistically applying reasoned judgement to arrive at effective solutions and implement performance improvements. They must also have demonstrated experience in the evaluation and analysis of commercial opportunities and a variety of commercial data. It is essential that the candidate must have extensive experience in garden retail product management. In addition to experience of working within the horticultural retail sector, success in developing businesses and growing market share will constitute a strong applicant.

 Additional Information

The hours of work for this position are 37.5 hours per week, working 5 days over 7 which includes weekend working and a typical working day is 9 am - 5 pm. The position comes with an Outer London Weighting allowance which is £2,828 per annum and is paid monthly. Holiday for this role is 33 days (247.5 hours) with holiday set to increase to 36 days (270 hours) after 3-5 years’ service and 38 days (285 hours) after 5-10 years’ service. In addition, there is a Salary Sacrifice scheme which involves a voluntary contribution of the individuals salary of up to 10% which will be matched by the client.

Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener to develop the gardens and implement the design of six-time Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medallist, Cleve West over the next few years. The position is based near Stow-on-the-Wold and is a full time and a permanent role.

The stunning property is a Grade-I listed medieval manor house which the owners bought 11 years ago. The remnants of the garden are still visible, with a series of pools surrounded by 'Himalayan' plantings - rhododendrons, conifers and bamboos. A gully rock garden, with a spring-fed stream runs downhill from near the house. Surrounding the house is a 5-acre garden which along with the moat and drawbridge is being renovated in starting in 2022. The owners are considering opening the garden through the NGS scheme once per year once the gardens are up to a high standard.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for the management and care of the gardens, and landscapes at the main estate and occasionally assist on the owner’s other estate nearby. With overall direction of the Employer, effectively manage, plan and prioritise your own work. They will be proactive in identifying areas where gardens/grounds can be improved or where current maintenance/working practices can be improved. In addition to the developments, areas of the garden are to be maintained such as the extensive lawns, riverbeds, borders, wildflower meadows and areas on the wider estate. The Head Gardener will lead the gardening team of two part time gardeners and a temporary gardener, effectively managing, planning and prioritising their work and ensure that all work carried out by the gardener’s team is carried out safely and complies with H&S legislation. The successful candidate will lead the programme & plan the gardens/landscape improvements in conjunction with Cleve West and the owners of the property, to include designs and plant/material requirements.

This new opportunity will suit an experienced and qualified horticulturist with excellent attention to detail, with garden planning and staff supervision experience.  Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with an ability to lead a small team of gardeners.

Suitable applicants will ideally possess academic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant identification and management skills. An experienced Head Gardener is sought after on a full time and permanent basis for a remarkable Jacobean mansion set in 12-acres of spectacular and well-regarded gardens nestled in the heart of Kent. Dating back to the 14th century the house and gardens are open to the public and managed by a preservation Trust where visitors can have tours around the house and unravel the 600 years of history, we well as exploring the open gardens. The maintenance of the gardens to a high standard for visitor interest is a priority for the Trust in association with its charitable purpose of preserving the estate.

The estate contains 12-acres of tranquil gardens that have seen four hundred years of changing garden fashions, surrounded by ancient parkland studded with stately oaks and chestnuts. Terraced lawns bordered by a vast yew hedge and topiaried box have been softened over the last century by the addition of long, curvy-edged herbaceous borders and ornamental tree and shrub plantings. All areas of the garden continue to be restored and maintained to an extremely high standard. The garden features a stunning walled garden containing an ornamental greenhouse, as well as fern and alpine houses. Further elements include a blooming rose garden, pan garden and croquet lawn, a wildflower garden, lily pond, and a spectacular Italian Garden.

As an ambassador of the house and gardens, the successful applicant will seek out opportunities to provide visitors with friendly conversation and background information on everything horticultural. Throughout the year the Head Gardener will be required to conduct a series of relaxed, informal, and informative gardening workshops for small groups, as well as giving garden tours and attending in house events. The garden is also host to an active and very successful education programme for local school children.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the management and planning of all aspects of the garden. This will include extensive ornamental plant management, lawn and hedge care, plant propagation, glasshouse work and kitchen gardening. The gardens are currently managed by a team of two permanent, highly skilled gardeners whom the successful candidate will be responsible for, as well as up to two trainees and a team of volunteers. The successful applicant will have substantial practical experience of managing and maintaining extensive grounds and gardens. This is a hands-on role which requires not only strong physical attributes but the ability to lead and communicate effectively with co-workers. It will be a key requirement that the candidate can plan and implement seasonal works programmes as well as delegate duties to the rest of the team.

Applicants will hold excellent plant knowledge alongside a relevant horticultural qualification. Previous experience as a Head Gardener with a proven track record in a leadership role responsible for performance management and in supporting and developing a team. Candidates will need good communication skills, and enthusiasm and confidence to engage with visitors and lead educational groups. The newly appointed Head Gardener will join a team of skilled gardeners, reporting into the principles and will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and on-going development of gardens. Job Brief

Your role will be to create and maintain a positive and pleasant work environment, ensuring high levels of organisational effectiveness, communication, and safety. The successful candidate should have at least 10 years’ experience in landscaping in a luxury market, and 5 years in a similar role.  Existing skills should include a CSCS card.  SSSTS or SMSTS would be preferable, but training can be provided.

Ultimately the Site Manager should be able to ensure the smooth running of the construction site and contribute to the timely completion of the project to the required standard while managing between 5 and 15 people. Strong organisational skills and time management along with a natural proficiency in written and verbal communication will be an integral part of the successful candidate’s skill set as well as being able to work calmly and efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Head Gardener

A talented and experienced Head Gardener is sought after to join a growing team on a family-owned estate in the Cotswolds.

The 96-acre estate consists of rolling parklands, formal lawns, immaculate hedges, small mixed borders, a small orchard, walled garden areas, a beautiful and productive kitchen garden, mixed and conifer woodlands and a large pond. There are also a few farm animals kept as pets and dogs who live in the house. Much of the parkland is in transition from hay meadow to wildflower, while other smaller areas are still managed as hay meadows. The orchard contains a few heritage apple and pear varieties, espalier fruit and ornamental cherries.

The Head Gardener will oversee all finer horticultural aspects of the estate, they will be supported by a small team comprising of gardeners and grounds workers. The ideal candidate will have experience in landscape design, and some ability to either draw design concepts or use C.A.D. to present ideas to the owners.

The estate is always developing, currently with a designer led natural pond project nearing completion, more large projects to begin soon and owners who welcome ideas and inspiration to develop smaller areas in-house. The successful candidate will have the ability to offer their own design ideas and implement those designs using external contractors, ensuring all work is carried out to the highest standard.

The role does require some time spent in the office as well as practical gardening tasks. Computer literacy is a must and a basic knowledge of record keeping and Health & Safety requirements is needed. The Head Gardener is responsible for tracking the garden and grounds finances and therefore must maintain up to date records which can be used by the owners accountants and financial management team. The role also requires facilitating all external contractors completing outdoor tasks, i.e., walling, gate servicing, machinery servicing etc. Therefore, a good all round practical knowledge of estates is necessary, as well as a desire to learn new skills from the current staff members.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for all outdoor areas of the estate being kept to the owners high standards and therefore a keen eye for detail is required. Estate work is varied and some flexibility is needed, occasional ‘other’ duties may be required such as driving errands, assisting the house staff moving furniture, harvesting vegetables, cutting flowers for the house etc.

The garden is equipped with a range of machinery hence basic knowledge of most powered garden tools and experience using them safely is a must.

Applicants will have a relevant horticultural qualification, ideally level 3 or above and proven experience managing a team and an estate. Further qualifications and experience with design would be advantageous. Strong communication skills are a must in this role, as well as physical fitness and being well presented. The Head Gardener is expected to keep the owners informed of progress and updated regularly, as well as seeking approval on certain projects and spending when needed. The successful candidate will be able to work alongside other department managers well. A minimum of 3 years experience as a Head Gardener on a private estate is required, as well as some design knowledge and experience with kitchen gardens.

This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and skilled Head Gardener. Normal working hours apply however flexibility is required depending on the needs of the principles and the season.

An incredible and rare opportunity has become available for a Head of Estates and Landscapes to be responsible for the care and development of the garden areas and the continuous smooth running of a beautiful English landscape garden in Surrey. 

Our client is a Grade I listed 18th century landscape garden of international renown, attracting over 250,000 visitors a year. Inspired by landscape paintings and the Grand Tour through Europe, the restoration of the garden began in the 1980’s with the aim to restore this “living work of art” and now is enjoyed by the public. The garden is set in a wooded valley and covers 158 acres with dramatic follies, calming waters and simply stunning views.

The Head of Estates and Landscapes will manage the garden to ensure it is maintained and developed to the highest horticultural standards in accordance with the masterplan and conservation management plan as agreed. As part of the property team, the post holder will promote the visitor experience within the gardens. This role involves line management responsibilities for the supervision and training of staff, students and volunteers. The Head of Estates and Landscapes will be expected to take the lead with administrative responsibilities such as keeping up to date records on Health and Safety, machinery records, plant data base information, training records, COSH assessments and relevant other records for the effective management of the estate.

The successful candidate will be an excellent collaborator / leader as they will be part of the leadership team managing a team of 6 full time staff and over volunteers. They will also enjoy a hands-on approach with the team and be confident in giving presentations/talks to groups. Applicants should have a National Diploma, NDH or HND in Amenity Horticulture or NVQ Level 2/3 (or equivalent) as well as practical gardening/horticultural experience. An understanding of the importance pf the spirit of place in maintaining and developing a historic garden and be committed to climate-conscious and sustainable gardening is important. As is, the ability to produce and implement garden maintenance and planting plan for the estate. A good degree of plant knowledge is required as well as the ability to keep accurate records. A full driving licence & tractor licence is essential.

It is desirable that candidates have experience of being involved in garden restoration projects and holds (or is happy to obtain within a 6-month period of starting; spray certificates and first aid at work certificate).

A beautiful 3-bedroom (on two floors) grade I listed cottage within the grounds is provided as part of the package for the successful applicant at a reduced rental fee. Partners, children and pets are welcome.

SALARY:  £37,000 - £40,000 depending on experience plus accommodation
