Head Gardener - Live Out - EC4001

Dynamic person required to take full responsibility for the management of a large 12-acre garden made up of lawns, woodland, colourful borders, kitchen/walled garden, pond, greenhouses and pavilion/summerhouse in Rutland.  The successful candidate will also be responsible for up to c. 4 assistant colleagues to help with the busy seasonal schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To ensure the effective responsibility for the property’s gardens and grounds at all times.
  • To report in a timely manner to the owners regarding any decisions, actions and progress relating to the gardens and grounds.
  • To source and actively liaise with all external horticultural suppliers and contractors for the owners approval, and in order to ensure full maintenance to the required standards at all times.
  • Establish good working relationships with all external contractors, whilst prioritising any required works and demonstrating informed decision making.
  • To maintain all service records and manuals in relation to the garden and grounds.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with the under gardener/s to resolve problems and make decisions that enhance overall effectiveness for the gardens and grounds.

Key Activities:

  • Ensure all outside areas and gardens are clean, neat and tidy at all times
  • Maintain outdoor natural swimming pool - supervise contractor visits etc.
  • Clean and maintain garden furniture and lights
  • Clean and maintain greenhouses, pavilion/summer house etc.

Housekeeper & Gardener/Handyman Couple - Live In - EC4032

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a live-in couple to join a historic private estate in Devizes, Wiltshire.  This opening would suit a couple with demonstrable experience in private estate maintenance and housekeeping respectively.  A generous salary of £22,000 each is offered to candidates in addition a two bedroom cottage on site.

The impressive eight bedroom main house is framed by an NGS registered, former RHS garden of six acres.  The 300 year old garden is currently managed by a full-time Skilled Gardener who will require assistance from time to time with basic gardening tasks such as mowing and hedge cutting.  The remainder of the estate maintenance duties will consist of non-horticultural tasks, i.e. DIY/handyman jobs on and inside the property buildings, occasional chauffeuring etc. The full-time gardener welcomes enthusiasm and the desire to learn, so keen gardeners with well-rounded practical estate management skills are invited to apply. 

Housekeeping duties will consist of the upkeep of the main house by way of cleaning, laundry, weekly shopping, and some preparation of food for one child of 8 years old.  Three dogs reside on site and will require care when the property owners are away.  This will be limited to feeding and opening the door to enable them to entertain themselves in the large garden.  The position will be a Monday to Friday role with free weekends except on very rare occasions, as unforeseen circumstances inevitably arise.
