This position would suit a talented senior gardener/horticulturist with extensive experience of managing high-end private estate gardens autonomously.
The impressive 3.5-acre formal garden comprises a walled kitchen garden, herbaceous borders, a greenhouse, fruit trees (plums, damsons, cherry, quince, peach and apples) with mature trees (two copses), a natural pool, extensive flower beds and expansive areas of managed lawn. Head Gardener (Live Out) - EC4607
An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener on a beautiful private estate near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. This position would suit a knowledgeable and flexible Senior/Head Gardener with a varied skill set and the desire to secure a long-term role managing a classic English country garden.
Set within approximately 65 acres of paddocks and fields, the majestic main building is surrounded by formal gardens on all sides with mature native woodland (ancient beech forest) providing a stately frame. The managed gardens comprise of formal rooms containing topiary bay, mixed beds and borders, a large parterre, a small enclosed kitchen garden, large pond with bulrushes, yew and laurel hedges, climbing wisteria, roses and extensive areas of lawn.
Some of the surrounding paddocks are managed for weeds and mown, so Head Gardeners with a good grasp of tractor mowers and machinery in general are encouraged to apply. The estate is home to four Highland Cattle as well as six chickens and one pig, though the Head Gardener will not be responsible for the animals. Twelve friendly dogs reside on site and are free to roam so applicants will need to be dog lovers, or at least not have a significant aversion to them. The paved/gravel areas are sprayed for weeds periodically and are raked once a week with a tractor attachment.
Applicants will ideally hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification at level 3 or above, and/or have extensive experience on private estates at Senior or Head Gardener level. Applicants must have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible in their approach to private estate gardening, i.e. be willing to assist with the occasional non-horticultural duties if required, as is often necessary on family estates. The successful applicant will manage two assistant gardeners/maintenance staff, both of whom are capable of providing the majority of basic maintenance requirements within the garden.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Gardener to take ownership of a classic private estate garden. The property owners are based in London but visit the estate at weekends and sometimes during the week. The garden is currently managed from a high level by a genuinely passionate local family member in terms of garden development and overall character. The new Head Gardener will take on this responsibility and will frequently correspond with the owners and the family member with respect to development and progress.

A unique opportunity for an experienced Sole Gardener has just become available for an equally unique modern private estate, situated in an area of outstanding beauty. The grounds are set within 130 acres of farmland, pasture and beech woods. The garden contains 4/5 acres of lawn with a 0.2 acre walled vegetable garden and greenhouse for propagating and growing produce for the family.
The owner is currently seeking a full time Sole Gardener to join the small dedicated team of staff on the estate, which includes a housekeeper and hands-on Estate Manager, the latter of whom will provide assistance to the Sole Gardener when required. Suitable candidates must have good practical skills, be able to operate and maintain large machinery, have previous work experience in propagating, growing vegetables and woodland maintenance. The successful candidate will be able to carry out work to a high standard with no supervision in a tidy efficient manner with a professional approach. Formal gardening qualifications are preferred, but not mandatory.
The majority of the work will be within the walled garden, but candidates must also be willing to undertake grounds keeping to include mowing, strimming, tree maintenance, hedge cutting etc. The owner spends part of the year overseas, so the availability of flowers and produce from the garden must coincide with her being in the UK.
The owner is keen to promote a friendly and rewarding working environment, so it is important that you have a positive attitude with good communication skills and are able to get on well with all other staff members.

Set within 100 acres of farmland with lakes, a stream and wetland, the formal gardens cover approximately 8 acres in total. The garden area also contains a swimming pool, a grass and a hard tennis court, greenhouses and polytunnel which will require management to varying degrees. The new Head Gardener will be responsible for management and enhancement of the gardens in general as well as for one full time gardener, one part time gardener (3 days/week) and two estate maintenance workers who can provide assistance in the garden as necessary. The surrounding farmland is managed by a Farm Manager, who reports to the Head Gardener in relation to the development of an overall management plan. The Head Gardener is responsible for formulating and administering the health and safety policy on the estate for the benefit of all outdoor staff (in relation to which, training will be arranged as appropriate).
