Skilled Gardener - Live Out - EC6160 - This position has now been filled
A Skilled Gardener is required for a private country house hotel estate, situated in a beautiful area of Cotswolds. Of approximately 45,000 hotels in the UK, this site is rated in the top 200, and includes an impressive garden designed by an eight-time Gold Medal winner at the Chelsea Flower Show, who continues to play a leading role on a consultative level.
The grounds extend to approximately 8-acres and are maintained to a high standard. The garden features formal lawns, herbaceous and mixed shrub borders, a walled garden with glasshouse, raised beds, box and yew hedges with simple topiary, top fruit (apple, plum and walled-trained pears and fig), wild flower meadow areas, a stream frontage, small lake, croquet lawn (used for marquee events) and a recently planted bog garden.
The gardens have been developed as a sequence, each highlighting the quintessential Cotswolds countryside in which the hotel is positioned. Surrounding the historic Cotswold Stone building itself, the garden consists in part of manicured lawns and a wildflower meadow, leading down to the River Eye on one side. The lake and rare bog garden, featuring a 19th century ice house, play host to some fascinating plant species that provide a unique atmosphere and character to the area.
The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will include lawn mowing, edging and turf care, hedge trimming and ongoing treatment to box hedges, maintenance of existing beds and borders and establishment of new plantings; incorporating use of drip-line irrigation. Other duties will include glasshouse management, leaf clearance; keeping paths and car park areas tidy, maintaining the compost heap and recycling green waste, day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of horticultural machinery and equipment (pedestrian and ride-on lawn mower with trailer, brush cutter, hedge trimmer and backpack leaf blower).
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, energetic and creative with excellent practical skills in all aspects of garden maintenance. This should be supported by good plant knowledge, a relevant academic horticultural qualification and proven horticultural experience; preferably within a small estate or similar garden open to the public. Applicants should have a good eye for detail, an organised, methodical and flexible approach to your work, the ability to work alone to a high standard and be able to apply initiative. The ideal candidate will fulfil the above, and will hold spray certification (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certification (CS30/CS31), though the latter is not essential as training may be provided for suitable candidates.
The successful candidate will be required to liaise with various stakeholders and take direction from the property owners, the aforementioned garden designer and the General Manager when necessary. The post holder will be responsible for supervising and motivating an assistant part-time gardener to achieve the above while working within a monthly budget, and be responsible for safe working practices via appropriate application and adherence to risk assessments. Some weekend work may be required in relation to seasonal conditions and events.
This is an excellent opportunity to work in a stunning garden alongside a highly-respected garden designer and horticulturalist, and for owners who are genuinely passionate about their garden.
