A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a sole gardener to develop the gardens surrounding a stunning converted Barn in Bolton and occasionally provide support with the client’s portfolio of properties.  

The converted barn is surrounded by 16 acres of land consisting of 6 acres of formal gardens, mature trees, a small paddock, stables, an outdoor swimming pool and a summer house. The formal gardens contain extensive yew hedging, a walled garden, formal lawns, wildflower meadows, kitchen garden and mixed and herbaceous borders.

The owners of the property are very passionate about their garden. The garden will host a wealth of plants and shrubs and the owners are looking for someone to really take ownership of the gardens and work closely with the architects and landscapers to achieve the vision. The owners are investing significantly in their garden and following the implementation, the sole gardener will support development plan.

Initially the position is for a sole gardener however, the successful candidate may have the opportunity to recruit as the grounds are developed. The sole gardener will have excellent horticultural and plant knowledge as well as plant husbandry skills. A knowledge of pest and disease control is important with either the knowledge of organic methods or the successful candidate will hold a PA1/PA6 spray certificate.

Applicants will ideally possess a level 3 horticultural qualification plus at least 5 years garden development experience on a private estate. He / She will have good communications skills and the ability to work alongside other staff and oversee contractors. A driving licence and the ability to operate (as well as basic maintenance of) a range of garden machinery would be an advantage.

The position would suit a sole gardener with experience in developing and managing gardens looking for an exciting long-term opportunity.

A wonderful new opportunity has arisen on a large private estate located close to Inverness in Scotland.  The position is offered with a generous salary and accommodation, and will suit a knowledgeable gardener with experience of managing a horticulturally diverse property on their own.  This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated gardener to continue the upkeep of newly developed gardens and inspire new ideas within them.  

Based just 20 minutes’ drive from Inverness, this stunning privately owned estate features a partridge and pheasant shoot as well as a traditional diverse formal garden, surrounded by woodland and within easy reach of several Lochs, including Loch Ness.  The family travel extensively and divide their time between their other homes in Shropshire and West Scotland. 

The two-acre formal garden grounds include formal lawns, herbaceous borders, a walled kitchen garden, large greenhouse, polytunnel, tennis court and dell.  A nearby holiday let has a comparatively smaller and more basic garden, which will fall under the responsibility of the Sole Gardener in terms of general maintenance.  Applicants must be comfortable around dogs as several reside on site, with one cat.

Outline of Key Responsibilities:

  • To maintain gardens and grounds to a high standard throughout the year.
  • Produce vegetables, fruit and cut flowers for the household.
  • Propagate plants for border planting and pot displays.
  • To carry out any other reasonable duties and small tasks as specified by the Principals.
  • To coordinate and supervise any contractors whilst working in the property grounds.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Good plant knowledge and horticultural skills.
  • Excellent timekeeping, flexibility and attention to detail.
  • Must work well as part of a team and be able to liaise well with other estate staff and others on the estate.

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00, with flexibility required as determined by weather conditions.  Some evening and weekend work will be required, including harvesting of fruit and vegetables, summer watering and similar season-dependent tasks.

This role is offered with a 2–3 bedroom detached cottage (unfurnished) with its own garden and driveway.  Council Tax is included, with the utility bills being the responsibility of the Sole Gardener.

Garden Maintenance Manager

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Garden Maintenance Manager to join an established company located near Canterbury in Kent.  The company has been in business for over 30 years - a testament to their continued provision of quality service in the gardening and landscape industry.  The primary desire is to increase the presence of the company around Canterbury and as such, this role presents a genuine opportunity to become more involved with the business following exemplary performance and longevity in the role.  The company offer a generous incentive scheme in addition to the stated salary.

The company now requires a Garden Maintenance Manager to work alongside and supervise a small team of existing gardeners on a full-time basis.  The successful candidate will manage the small team in terms of scheduling and supervision across approximately 20 sites between London and Kent.  The role will involve tending to numerous commercial and residential properties on a scheduled, rotational and hands-on basis.  A driving licence is essential for this role as the successful applicant will drive a company vehicle on a daily basis.  The post holder will be required to drive to London from the Canterbury area on 1-2 days per week to tend to gardens alongside the team in the summer months (fewer days in winter), which will involve leaving the depot at approximately 05:00 and returning for an early finish around 15:30.  The role will be client-facing, so applicants must be well presented and sociable with a commercial awareness.  Typical hours are between 06:00 – 15:00/16:00, Monday to Friday.  The business closes down between Christmas and New Year.

The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification and/or considerable gardening experience in a similar role.  Previous experience in the supervision of other gardeners is desired, as is strong horticultural knowledge.  Applicants for this role must have good plant identification skills and garden management experience, ideally on horticulturally diverse estates.  Applicants will need to be competent with a range of garden machinery (and basic maintenance thereof).  Typical daily duties will include hedge cutting, lawn maintenance, pruning, planting, bed/border maintenance, as well as a range of other gardening tasks as they arise.  Competence with back-pack sprayers and a spray ticket (PA1/PA6) is required.

Candidates must be diplomatic and have a positive in approach to the management of gardeners in training, be flexible in their approach to work, physically fit and have a ‘can-do’ attitude.  Uniforms are provided.  A full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

We have attained gold standard under the David Bellamy Conservation Award for the past 9 years.  Our grounds are not formal gardens but more like a park.

The following summarises the main responsibilities

RESPONSIBLE TO: Owners and General Manager

MAIN DUTIES
  • Manage, develop, and train staff
  • Advise on external training required
  • Advise on team numbers required
  • Be responsible for the day to day management and monitoring of the gardens and maintenance team including routine staff monitoring, timekeeping and setting objectives
  • Ensure that all work carried out by the team is carried out safely and complies with H&S legislation and Mercia Marina H&S Policy
  • Monitor performance against schedules
  • Check daily the repair log and arrange/undertake repairs as required
  • Be proactive in identifying areas where gardens and maintenance can be improved or where current working practices can be reviewed
  • Ensure site safety is maintained through regular inspection of above ground infrastructure
  • Programme & plan gardens/landscape/maintenance improvements in conjunction with owner/General Manager and landscape consultant, to include designs and plant/material requirements
  • Plan and schedule seasonal maintenance to include lawn areas, shrubs, borders, planters/hanging baskets/hedges/ trees & weed control
  • Liaise with owners/General Manager and landscape consultant on new and replacement planting, seasonal bedding plants & other horticultural materials as required
  • Liaise with owners/General Manager and landscape consultant on new and replacement equipment including tractors and other mechanical equipment
  • Be responsible for carrying out or arranging maintenance/repair/replacement of equipment
  • Be responsible for safe use and return to store of all tools
  • Compile list of any new/replacement tools and PPE required
  • Ensure site is kept clean and litter free through ongoing litter picking and emptying of bins
  • Ensure weekly collection of site rubbish and cleanliness of bin stores
  • Supervise/direct team to co-operate with external contractors for works on site
  • Supervise/direct team and external contractors in maintenance of ditches, ponds, drains and pumping stations
  • Supervise/direct team in estate maintenance tasks such as installation and repair of fences, pontoons, jetties, painting, erecting signage, etc
  • Supervise/direct team/outside contractors in installation of like for like electrical equipment and simple repair of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Supervise/direct team to clearing and control of ice and snow to ensure pathways are safe
  • Supervise/direct team in preparing for and clearing away after events
  • Advise on team development and resources/numbers required

Flexibility required covering weekend duties on rotation.

Head Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to join a small team on a large privately-owned estate near Northampton.  The gardens are open to the public throughout the summer months and are maintained to a high standard throughout the year.  This position would suit a qualified and knowledgeable gardener with excellent attention to detail and experience of supervising under gardeners.

The formal and ‘wild’ gardens located adjacent to the main house extend to approximately 13 acres and have been developed over the course of the last century by each of the property owners, in association with several distinguished landscape designers.  The gardens comprise a series of ‘rooms’ separated by mature yew hedges and walls which enclose large herbaceous borders, formal ponds, statuary and a fine collection of mature trees and shrubs.  An additional less formal garden is set on the banks of a meandering stream.

The new Head Gardener will work in collaboration with the property owner, though largely autonomously with support from two further members of the gardening team to ensure that the gardens are managed and presented to an extremely high standard.  Applications are invited from either current estate Head or Senior Gardeners with experienced of managing large estate gardens throughout the seasons.  The successful applicant will need to be committed, trustworthy, self-motivated, have an eye for detail and a desire to achieve high standards.  Applicants must possess good supervisory and communication skills as well as a positive attitude.  This is very much a hands-on position that requires good leadership skills and enthusiasm for disseminating horticultural knowledge to those within the team.

Applicants will ideally hold a minimum RHS Level 3 or equivalent horticulture qualification, with PA1/PA6 chemical spray certificates being desirable.  Candidates must have comprehensive plant knowledge and familiarity with most gardening practices, including the use of common garden machinery.  As the role will involve the supervision of under gardeners, a clear understanding and working knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation is required.

Although the position is predominantly based on a 39-hour working week, flexibility is required to cover weekends and Bank Holidays as required for the purposes of watering and open days.  The position can potentially be offered on a live-out basis to candidates already living locally.  This position offers an excellent opportunity to work within the celebrated gardens of a fabulous historic estate, within a close-knit team, and for owners who are genuinely passionate about their gardens.

This position is offered with accommodation on site by way of a 3-bedroom house.  Water rates and Council Tax are the responsibility of the successful candidate.  A partner, children and a dog or cat are welcome though will be at the discretion of the employer.

He / She will work on their own initiative, researching, trialing and growing edible plants with a maximum potency for minerals and supplements.  The Plant Scientist will work closely with the production manager on the full lifecycle of the product; propagation, growing, analysing, drying, processing and packaging,

The candidate can be based anywhere in the UK however, occasional travel to the growing unit, currently in Devon, is required to oversee the growing.

Key Skills:

The successful candidate will have experience with hydroponic growing techniques and mineral uptake into growing plants. They will be happy to learn and explore new techniques to optimise uptake potential for nutraceutical formulations. He / She will have horticultural experience in plant propagation and plant husbandry as well as the scientific interest. The Plant Scientist will be strong mathematically to accurately calculate the potency of the solutions.

This role would suit someone with experience as a Plant Scientist and a driven and focused personality to effectively achieve goals. Good organisational skills and the ability to manage a number of tasks at once is important.
