We are looking for a skilled estate gardener to join our team working on a beautiful estate garden near Helmsley, North Yorkshire.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team of 10 current gardeners working on a beautiful private estate in North Yorkshire, consisting of around 60 acres of gardens and landscapes.

Reporting to the senior gardeners, this varied and interesting role requires an experienced and knowledgeable horticulturalist.

Applicants should possess several years’ experience working in a larger garden environment.  This role will require excellent plant knowledge and technical skills.

The hands on role involves the high level maintenance of a variety of large and differently themed gardens, such as, rose gardens, herbaceous borders, naturalistic gardens, cottage gardens, large scale container gardening, woodland gardens, lakes and, ponds.

There is also a large production glasshouse an an ornamental glasshouse.

In collaboration with the team, you would be involved in different garden-based activities such as pruning, shrubs, climbers, clipped hedges and topiary. Planting, both seasonal and longer-term planting. Weed and pest and disease control. Container planting and feeding, watering. Propagation of both hardy and seasonal garden stock. Dead heading and general tidying of borders.

We also have a program to develop new and varied wildflower meadows.

The garden contains many large, paved areas and steps and you would be part of the team effort to keep these areas clean and tidy.

Desirable: Spray certificate (PA1/PA6)

Head Gardener

An incredible opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Head Gardener to maintain a beautiful private estate garden located on the Scottish Borders in the historic county of Berwickshire.

The established gardens are part of a wider estate. Directly surrounding the property, the 5 acres garden comprise of formal areas including lawns, informal grass areas, thousands of bulbs, herbaceous borders, a cutting garden, fruit trees, hedges and a large Alitex Greenhouse. The Head Gardener is a key position, and the person appointed will be responsible for ensuring that all areas are maintained to the highest horticultural standards in order to preserve its character.

In addition to maintaining all areas of the garden, the successful candidate will work closely with the owner to continue to enhance the beauty and function of the garden. This role will feature the supervision of a full-time gardener.

The successful candidate will ideally hold a horticultural qualification e.g. RHS Level 2 or above and / or equivalent suitable horticultural experience on a diverse private estate. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent plant knowledge and technical skill, a good knowledge of health and safety and hold a spraying certificate. Practical experience with the use and maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery such as strimmers, lawnmowers, hedge trimmers is important. A digger licence would be beneficial.

The salary on offer is £38,000 plus pension contribution and includes accommodation on the estate. The accommodation is a 4-bedroom semi-detached cottage, which is a 30-minute drive from Edinburgh, with the council tax and utilities being the tenant’s responsibility. Partners, children and pets are welcome. Potential additional employment for partner/spouse may be available.

The hours are 40 hours per week worked on a flexible basis with 25 days holiday per annum. Due to the rural location of the property, a clean driving license is essential for this position. Excellent references will be required.

Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener with experience with estate maintenance, to join the garden and grounds of a beautiful residential property located on the picturesque island of Jersey. The owner now requires a skilled gardener with additional handyperson qualities to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the gardens and grounds to become part of the small, friendly, family-like team consisting of a Personal Assistant, Cleaner and live in Housekeeper.

The stunning 2-acre gardens feature fine lawns, one of which at the front of the property provides unspoilt views of the ocean. There is a greenhouse propagating a wide variety of plants such as cyclamens, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs from both cuttings and seeds. The tennis court has been converted into raised bed vegetable garden growing produce for the house, a selection of fruit trees including lime, lemon and orange which need to be wrapped in the winter months. Also, within the grounds is an indoor swimming pool and cutting garden growing roses and dahlias for the main house.

Our client seeks a highly skilled Gardener/Groundsperson to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants should ideally possess several years’ experience working within a private estate setting, in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, kitchen gardening, specialist pruning, spraying, weeding, strimming, edging and rejuvenating beds. The owner is a keen gardener, who is happy to collaborate with the gardener with regards to ideas on the development of the gardens.

In addition to gardening responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to be fully competent in maintenance and groundsman activities, which include but are not limited to, power washing the paths and driveway, topping up bird feeders, monitoring irrigation, leaf blowing, raking, digging, and managing compost. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is also flexible in their work to provide basic DIY assistance around the house as and when required. Other general duties will include occasional chauffeuring and valeting of the owners 2 cars on a monthly basis.

Management of external contractors will be an additional feature of this position and therefore previous experience in doing so will be advantageous for prospective candidates. Applicants should be physically fit and with a ‘can do’ attitude. A self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role.

A full, clean UK driving license, previous experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery including PA1 and PA6 spraying, and chainsaw certification are a requirement for this position; however, external contractors are to be used for large hedge works. The house is well equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. 

This position comes with a beautiful one bedroom, furnished flat, situated on site which boasts glorious views of the surrounding countryside. The flat is suitable for a non-smoking single occupant or a couple, however, not suitable for pets and/or children. A requirement of the role involves completing daily security checks and monitoring the main house when the principle is away. The successful candidate will need to liaise with the live in Housekeeper to ensure that there is no cross over with annual leave or absences with regards to security duties. 

The hours of work for this position are 7:30am-4.30pm, Monday-Friday with a coffee break 10:00-10:30am, and lunch break 1pm-1:30pm. Please note, the successful candidate will be subject to a DBS check.

Skilled Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Skilled Gardener to manage a beautifully diverse 25-acre estate garden. This is a full-time position for an individual with a deep passion for horticulture, and a keen eye for detail.

This 25-acre garden features an array of stunning elements, including a five-acre field. A picturesque lake with an island that holds a topiary garden. A formal parterre, with eight rose beds, and a knot garden. There are also traditional cottage garden borders, shrub borders, a productive vegetable garden, and a 140 year old orchard.

Experienced Gardener

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener to manage, maintain and enhance the beautiful gardens and grounds of a private Grade II listed Georgian property located in the Southeast of Bath. The vacancy is part time, self-employed 3 days per week with the assistance of a part time gardener or potentially 4 days per week if required.

The well-established 9 acres gardens surrounding the main house comprise of well-maintained formal gardens featuring a walled garden with rose garden, herbaceous borders, productive kitchen garden, cutting garden, espalier trees and greenhouse. There is an orchard, with brook and wildflower meadow, a field (with seasonal grazing) with wooded copse, lawns, mixed beds, woodland walk and extensive yew and hornbeam hedging. Other areas include a swimming pool, compost areas and bonfire.

The Gardener will be involved in all aspects of garden maintenance, plus any enhancements, using a primarily organic approach. Regular gardening duties to include plant establishment, propagation and management; cultivation and harvesting of fruit and veg; species specific pruning; hedge cutting; weeding; crop rotation; general health, pest and disease control; tending to herbaceous borders; plant identification; composting.

Additional duties as part of the role include ground keeping such as chopping firewood; overseeing bonfires; rodent control; gutter clearance; basic machinery and pool maintenance; and ad hoc garden event support. The Gardener will occasionally oversee contractors (e.g. tree surgeon) and a Part-time assistant gardener.

Applicants will have all round seasonal gardening experience and must be happy to work outside in all weathers. A formal horticultural qualification is desirable (RHS Level 2 or equivalent) and / or proven extensive and relevant expertise in a similar setting. The role requires the experienced operation of wide range of garden machinery, including strimmer, flail mower, ride on and pedestrian mowers, chain saw, hedge trimmers and more. The successful candidate will have the appropriate proficiency, and where necessary licenses, to operate the range of gardening related machinery and processes such as spraying. A clear understanding of the relevant Health & Safety legislation, Manual handling, and risk assessment associated with gardening work is important.

A valid driving license and own vehicle is essential due to the location of the property. A Gun license is desirable.

Sole Gardener

A fantastic opportunity has opened for an experienced Sole Gardener on a stunning 15-acre estate near Cirencester, responsible for maintaining a beautiful 3-acre garden. This is a permanent, full-time position offering either live-in or live-out options.

Surrounding the property are picturesque pastures and the 3-acre garden boasts an array of features including a historic 180-year-old wisteria growing on the front of the house, expansive lawns, mixed beds and borders, vegetable garden (parterre and pots), a tennis court, swimming pool and water features, and various terraced areas. There are two glasshouses, one for seed propagation and the other for growing produce such as tomatoes, chillis and peppers. Additionally, the gardens include a fruit cage that requires restoration, as well as pleached hedging and a mix of young and mature trees scattered throughout the estate. The estate is in an area of natural beauty and attracts a range of wildlife.

The gardens have been enhanced in recent years with assistance from external design consultants. There are plans to add additional beds and borders once the gardener role has been filled and the appointee will be involved in the implementation of these plans.

As this is a sole gardener role, additional responsibilities may be required such as general handyperson duties as and when the season allows, clearing and preparing garden furniture and occasional driving. This is a dog-friendly environment as the owners have a working cocker spaniel and a Norfolk Terrier. The Sole Gardener will ideally have a flexible and adaptable approach.

The successful candidate will be passionate about plants, physically fit, and have proven experience working on private estates. Minimum qualifications will include chainsaw certification, RHS level 2 and spray certification. The estate owners are willing to support further training. This is a full-time position, a fantastic opportunity to be part of a small and close-knit team and an exciting long-term development project. The successful candidate will be hands on, motivated and capable of undertaking all aspects of gardens and grounds work with its physical challenges. He / She will be very organised, and eager to grow further as a horticulturalist with good initiative. The skilled gardener will work in collaboration with the rest of the estate team to promote a positive culture.  

Candidates should have excellent plant knowledge and either a horticultural qualification and/or the relevant experience working on a similar private estate. Propagation experience as well as specialist pruning knowledge e.g. Rose pruning would be advantageous. PA1/PA6 spray certificates are desired as well as knowledge of health & safety at work. He / She will have the ability to operate a range of garden machinery and have good craft skills. Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join the garden within a private estate located near Lewes, East Sussex. The owners now require an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a horticulturally diverse garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds. This is a full-time permanent position which will give the successful applicant an opportunity to collaborate with the friendly principles to develop the gardens further.

The 18th century property sits within 7-acres of formal gardens surrounding the main house which, were previously designed by a multi-award-winning Garden Designer.  The quintessentially English country garden features an ornamental walled garden, 2 large ponds.  The gardens also boast impressive and intensive planting schemes bursting with colour and texture throughout the seasons as well as formal lawns and a collection of exotic trees. The garden is well established and has been professionally designed and maintained, therefore the owners are looking for a highly skilled candidate to keep the gardens at a high standard.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Suitable applicants will possess a recognised horticultural qualification as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, weeding and rejuvenating beds. The owners are seeking a candidate who is keen on sustainability and organic gardening, mirroring their values. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a diverse garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

The owners are passionate about their garden and are open to ideas the Gardener will have with regards to the development of the gardens. Some works are cared for by external contractors, therefore previous experience in managing contractors will be advantageous for prospective candidate. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery, which ideally the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.

The client is open to candidates who are seeking both a live out or a live in role with accommodation on offer to the successful candidate with partners and pets welcome; unfortunately the property would not be suitable for children.

Working hours are Monday – Friday with timings flexible depending on the season with statutory pension and holiday entitlement being 20 days plus Bank Holidays. Please note, the successful candidate with be offered subject to extensive reference checks, both written and verbal. Candidates will also need to provide evidence of qualifications held and hold a full driver’s licence.

SALARY:  Up to £35,000 depending on experience
