The Role

What You’ll Be Doing:

We are looking for a gardener to work and manage our very productive organic garden on the beautiful island of Iona.

The Argyll Hotel is a 17 bedroom hotel and restaurant located off the West Coast of Scotland on the island of Iona. Iona is a very popular holiday destination with tourists being attracted by its beautiful beaches, outstanding views and ancient abbey. Both the hotel and restaurant are highly regarded, this is in no small part due to its organic garden and its produce, which is showcased in the restaurant on a daily basis.

We currently have a vacancy for a gardener, starting on 1st April (or earlier) and whose duties will come to an end in November. (Usual length of contract February – November though option for winter work available).

The position involves working 5 days out of 7 on a 42.5 hour week, depending on seasonal demands.

The main duties of the position are to manage the garden of the Argyll Hotel, with particular focus on: -

· Annual ordering of seed, compost and other growing materials

· Maintaining the grounds, hedges and lawns of the Argyll Hotel

· Planting and tending the garden

· Organic weed & pest control

· Training and supervising the garden assistant

· Liaising with the kitchen regarding produce required on a daily basis

· Acting as the public face of the garden by providing tours and entering competitions

· Ensuring that the garden is run in line with the standards set by the Soil Association.

· Maintaining records to ensure continuity in garden production.

The ideal candidate will be punctual, hardworking and conscientious. They should be able to work independently, have excellent communication skills coupled with previous experience of working within a vegetable garden.

A Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 gardening qualification would be preferable though is not essential.

The position will pay £14.80 per hour and also includes a share of tips (Averaged over £250 per month last year (not guaranteed)

The Department

The Senior Gardener would join the Gardens Team. The Garden Team are part of the Grounds Department and are made up of 29 professional and highly motivated individuals who pride themselves on the maintenance and upkeep of the prestigious gardens and lawns, including herbaceous borders, woodland borders, a lake, hot border, conservatory, extensive rose borders and mature shrubs and trees. The team pride themselves on a high standard of visual aesthetic as well as a strong engagement with biodiverse and sustainable horticultural practices.

The Senior Gardener Role

  • Allocating duties to the team of Gardeners.
  • Working with the Head Gardener on weekly and monthly operations logistics.
  • To place orders and manage data spreadsheets.
  • To manage the IPM systems and biological controls.
  • To ensure all Gardeners are appropriately trained and carry out all duties in line with the Club’s Health & Safety Policy.
  • To provide horticultural knowledge and guidance to the team of Gardeners informally and as a part of the Annual Training Schedule.
  • To undertake all horticultural duties to ensure that the Club gardens are maintained and developed to a high standard.
  • Take maintenance and development responsibility for a portion of the Club’s gardens.

Working Schedule

As Senior Gardener you will work a 39-hour week, plus regular weekend overtime – one in three weekend mornings.

The Candidate


Candidates will be passionate and qualified horticulturalists (minimum RHS Level 2, PA1 and PA6 Spraying Qualifications) coupled with an extensive plant knowledge. Previous experience of supervising teams and managing budgets would be advantageous. A sound knowledge of computers and IT systems is also required.

The ideal Nursery Production Manager will:

  • Keeping the bedding and vegetable retail area tidy and well merchandised.
  • Maintaining cleanliness across the nursery.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Plant Buying Manager to join our client's esteemed and independent Garden Centre in Inverness, Scotland. If you have extensive horticultural knowledge and purchasing experience, this full-time, permanent position could be your perfect next step.

Responsibilities

As the Plant Buying Manager, you will play a crucial role in overseeing and developing our client's thriving plant sales department. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and managing a small team of dedicated staff.
  • Driving plant quality and sales and supporting related initiatives.
  • Providing face-to-face sales assistance and managing customer enquiries.
  • Collaborating with suppliers to ensure well-stocked departments that meet customer demand.
  • Maintaining high standards of presentation, merchandising, and pricing strategies.
  • Attending trade shows including foreign locations and purchasing large quantities of suitable plants.
  • Site visits.

 Key Qualifications:

Your role is integral to maintaining our commitment to exceptional customer service, offering friendly and informed advice that has been a cornerstone of our success. Your expertise will ensure continued customer satisfaction and uphold our distinguished company reputation.

  • Strong horticultural knowledge and experience
  • Proven supervisory or managerial experience in a Garden Centre or similar environment
  • Ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a team
  • Ability to confidently buy large quantities of plants for multiple sites
  • Energetic, creative, and positive attitude
  • Strong IT and numeracy skills
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Relocation support is available.

This role is ideal for someone currently holding a Plant Buyer / Manager position or a similar role, ready to advance their career. You will bring energy, creativity, and a passion for engaging with the public, ensuring our Garden Centre continues to flourish. Please note that regular weekend work on a rotational basis will be required. Relocation support is available.
