They are now looking for a Skilled Gardener to join the team at Battersea Power Station.

Main Responsibilities

As a Skilled Gardener on this stunning site, the successful candidate will play a key role as a member of the horticultural team on the maintenance of all landscape and infrastructure. Playing an important part in the development and ongoing maintenance of the site.

Main duties will include:

  • Maintain and prepare all horticultural and ecological areas as directed, assisting in all forms of gardening.
  • Landscape maintenance including but not limited to weeding, trimming, edging, pruning, planting, watering.
  • Operating a wide range of garden tools and machinery and be responsible for the care and day to day cleaning of the equipment
  • Responding to clients and members of the public on site in a polite, courteous and professional manner
  • Work with minimal supervision to consistently deliver objectives, carrying out work in a timely manner
  • Display a wide range of horticultural skills and practices.
Key Skills:

The successful candidate will have excellent horticultural knowledge with a recognised horticultural qualification being highly desirable. A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the horticultural sector with plenty of hands-on experience, as well as a good understanding of a wide variety of landscape strategies and knowledge of plants is also beneficial.

Also essential for the role are:

  • Hands on gardening experience
  • Experience with use of a wide range of garden tools and machinery
  • A demonstratable ability to establish and sustain a good working relationship within a team, as well as holding the initiative to work alone.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

This is a full-time, permanent role. Working days are Monday to Friday with summer working hours 6:30am – 3pm and winter working hours 7:30am – 4pm.

Holiday entitlement is 20 days plus Bank Holidays.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Act as an ambassador of Covent Garden and seek out opportunities to provide visitors and occupiers with friendly conversation and background information of the plants used and upcoming installations.

Senior Gardener

An exciting opportunity for a Senior Gardener has arisen to work within a stunning private estate, near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. The current Gardener has been with the owners for a wonderful 18 years and due to their upcoming retirement, the client is now looking for enthusiastic and passionate horticulturalists to join the estate.

In its entirety the estate covers 250-acres, with 6-acres of both relaxed and formal gardens surrounding the property. These comprise of expansive lawns, an orchard, a walled garden which contains shrubs, herbaceous borders, espalier fruit trees, fruit and vegetables and a cutting garden. Other elements include a Victorian greenhouse, a variety of climbers and a Victorian lido which has recently been converted into a pond. The owners are extremely fond of their garden and have some upcoming projects planned, this includes the development of an area within the walled garden, as well as potentially creating another large pond. Therefore, this role would suit candidates who can offer their creative input and help deliver the new projects to the highest standards.  

Applicants should ideally hold a horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant knowledge and previous experience working on private estates. Experience in planting, pruning, lawn care and propagation is necessary for the role, as is competence in the use of a wide range of machinery and good craft skills. A full UK driving licence is essential. The successful candidate will be passionate about their work and have a positive attitude and will have the ability to work with little supervision and maintain a high level of performance, be dynamic and have the ability to problem solve with autonomy.

The owner is looking for a full time Senior Gardener with a working week of 40-hours per week, Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work for watering purposes, depending on the season. The Senior Gardener will oversee one other part time gardener.

Sole Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to take ownership of a beautiful private estate located near Littlehampton, West Sussex. This position would suit a presentable and time-served experienced gardener/horticulturalist with a good work ethic, good physical fitness and the ability to plan their own work and time.

The three acre private garden is partitioned into areas corresponding to the orientation of the house. Large open formal lawns, multiple herbaceous borders, raised borders, rose gardens, pleached hedging, yew hedging, planted pergola, ornamental pots for bedding plants, mixed shrub borders, paved areas and mature trees make up the stunning character of this stunning garden.

The Sole gardener will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the garden to a high horticultural standard. There are also raised beds used for growing ornamental plants for the garden including propagation, splitting and growing from seed, as well as composting areas.

As the private garden is located adjacent to, and associated with the nearby golf course, some maintenance of the commercial garden area will be required as part of the role and occasionally providing guidance to the greenkeepers from time to time, for maintaining planted areas. In addition, there are two other properties, the adjoining cottage garden and another garden, all within walking distance, that require gardening work to be undertaken when appropriate.

Applicants should ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and have comprehensive plant knowledge including herbaceous borders, rose care and pruning, demonstrable experience of gardening autonomously, and must be able to plan their own work effectively at all times of the year. Possess a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable. Skilled Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, Skilled Gardener to join a historic estate in West Sussex. Set within 13-acres of gardens, the formal aspect comprising of 6-acres around the manor house and barns and surrounded by Vineyards. The nature of the garden is majoritively private, but with some areas that are enjoyed by the public and visitors on open days and for events.

The garden is nestled in a valley, looking out directly onto the South Downs, and includes extensive terraced and sloped herbaceous borders, matured specimen tree collection, large ponds fed by a chalk spring, rose and cut flower gardens, wildflower meadows, cloud pruned Box and Yew topiary, and formal lawns.

The garden underwent an extensive redesign in 2021-2022, and continues to establish, with more opportunity for creative development in the future. Additional to the main garden there is a small cottage with a productive kitchen garden, orchard and apiary, which provides produce to the family house, and to catered events.

Though the gardens are not managed organically, chemical use is kept to a minimum, and there is an ethos of environmentally sensitive gardening, managed for nature. An integrated approach to pest and weed management is expected.

The Skilled Gardener will report to the Senior Gardener, and the successful applicant will be involved in the day-to-day management of the garden, and oversee areas of responsibility or projects, which they will help develop. This role would suit a creative horticulturist with a motivated and a positive character with an ability to work as part of a team, leading junior staff and managing contractors, as well as working upon their own initiative and expertise to cultivate the garden and prioritise workloads.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining the formal and informal garden and soft landscaping such as weeding, mulching, pruning, and tidying;
  • Planting and maintenance of herbaceous, trees and shrubs across the garden including the establishing, pruning and maintenance of cloud topiary;
  • Mowing and maintaining the formal lawns with a variety of machinery;
  • Taking responsibility for some areas of the garden, and developing and improving these areas over time;
  • Working at height to maintain climbers, hedges and trees across the gardens;
  • Management of junior members of staff and contractor gardeners;
  • Prioritising workloads and collaborating with departments to present a garden to the highest horticultural standards.

Applicants will have a comprehensive plant knowledge, ideally holding an RHS Level 2 horticultural qualification (or equivalent) and five years’ experience in private estate gardens or horticulturally diverse public gardens.

Candidates must be confident in their use of garden machinery including strimmers, brush cutters, hedge trimmer, pedestrian and ride on mowers, and small tractors and trailers, and have a good working knowledge of health and safety. A broad range of technical horticultural knowledge and skills is necessary, as the plant collection is diverse, and good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden are required, as is the ability to work well with a small team; with excellent communications skills, with a diplomatic and a constructive approach to their work.

Some paid overtime is occasionally expected if there are important events taking place. The candidate must be comfortable around animals, as the estate lies on several bridleways, and there are regular horses, cats and dogs around the working areas.

A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is located rurally. Chemical spray certificates (PA1/6) and chainsaw certificates are desirable for this role, and training and development will be supplied to the right candidate. References and a current DBS will be required.
