The ideal candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 2 or above, have a good level of gardening experience, good plant knowledge, experience with a range of grounds maintenance equipment and will be used to working with common garden plants and features.  The role will primarily involve acting as a mobile gardener, working under and alongside the existing small team of likeminded employees on behalf of private residential clients.  In addition to general garden care, the role will include collaborating on soft landscaping installation projects – including new planting schemes, tree & hedge planting, turfing and seeding of new ornamental and wildflower lawns.

The successful applicant will be conscientious, well presented, able to work under their own initiative and have a positive attitude when it comes to working with colleagues, and for the benefit company’s loyal client base. Skilled Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced gardener to maintain and manage the private garden surrounding a 13th century house near Canterbury, Kent. 

The two-acre garden consists of mixed herbaceous borders, shrubs, roses, mature trees, lawns and spring bulbs.  The owners are largely self-sufficient in vegetables in the kitchen garden with a 4-course rotation.  There is a heated greenhouse for propagation and tender plants. A well-used conservatory is attached to a period house and the owners take pride in having it full of flowering plants in the dull winter months.

The owners are garden enthusiasts and are looking for an experienced gardener able to work alone with drive and initiative to manage their garden.  They would be required to undertake a range of normal gardening duties, including weeding, planting, deadheading, pruning, mowing, propagation etc.  As there are extensive hedges on site, the owners engage a contractor to cut the hedges.

The ideal candidate will have a positive outlook and friendly character.  He/she will be organised, able to plan and prioritise workload and have good time and record-keeping skills. Applicants should have good horticultural knowledge, good plant identification and, ideally, a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification.  Spray certificates PA1/PA6 are required; however, the owners would be willing to support the training if required.  Experience growing vegetables would be an advantage.  Ability to operate a strimmer and lawnmower are also needed for the role.

The position involves working an average of 39 hours per week - Mondays to Fridays and alternate weekends (non-negotiable) with a fixed day off during the week. 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. It will also include working late nights on Thursdays until 8:00 p.m. on a rota basis (once the garden centre is back open on Thursday evenings) and assisting at company events as and when required.

The company has blossomed into a trusted, reliable establishment, priding themselves on creating gardens that take people’s breath away. The owners have also begun to propagate and supply their own plants, providing clients with an even more personal, homegrown experience.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and skilled gardener or Team Leader to join their team. The focus of the role will mainly be with one of their clients on a beautiful diverse private estate garden with occasional assistance on other sites. This may change in the future according to the client base. Reporting into the owner of the business, the gardener will be working with and ideally guiding three to four other gardeners onsite. The private garden mentioned above is about 10 acres and consists of formal lawns, pond, vegetable garden, herbaceous and mixed borders, beds, topiary, orchard that has recently been planted and a lake.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the maintenance and further enhancement of the garden to the specifications agreed between the owners of the business and the clients. The team work to a high horticultural standard and all members are very hands on. The garden equipment is all provided by the company and all gardens worked on are always left in neat and tidy at the end of the day.

Applicants should have excellent horticultural knowledge and plant identification. PA1/PA6 spray certificates are desirable. Excellent technical skills and experience with vegetable growing, specialist pruning including roses, wisteria and fruit trees is required for the role.  The position is open to candidates who are organised, able to plan and prioritise workload and have either managed other team members previously or have the ability to move into a Team Leader role. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery, good craft skills and a full UK driving licence are also essential.

The working hours are 7.30 am to 4.30 pm with a half an hour break in the morning and a half an hour break for lunch. The team all meet at the office first thing in the morning and from there take a van to the site they would be working at. Due to Covid restrictions, the team now drive directly to site, although are required to come to base only if they are working on alternative gardens. This practice will continue going forward, as it suits the staff. All clients are roughly in a 10 – 15 mile radius from the base. A competitive salary is offered and will be depending on experience.

Job Description:
  • To support the nursery manager in fulfilling the nursery growing and production plans.
  • Supervising the growing team duties to include weeding, irrigation, feeding, pruning, disease and pest control also ensure all records and database are maintained and updated.
  • Ensuring the nursery team deliver to expectation in terms of picking of correct plants to the required standards for customer collection, despatch or hire.

Head Gardener

The new Head Gardener will be responsible for management and enhancement of the gardens in general as well as manage a team of one full time groundskeeper /handyman and two part time gardeners, who can provide assistance in the garden as necessary. He / She will be hands on in their role and nurture and lead the team.

Applicants must have excellent plant knowledge and ideally hold a horticultural qualification to a level 2 or above, experience with plant propagation, kitchen gardening, garden staff management, and be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  He / She will have a solid understanding of horticulture and an in-depth knowledge needed for planting schemes as well as have an excellent understanding of the seasons and specialist pruning knowledge to execute and carry out the role to a high horticultural standard.

Job Description:

Good organizational skills are essential, as are excellent communication skills, the ability to work successfully as part of a team, and good problem-solving skills. Most work is in the Home Counties, but stay-aways will often be required, and a fair degree of travel will be involved. Full driving license essential, as is a professional appearance. References will be required.
