The position will include responsibility for a small team.  The Plant Team pride themselves on giving their customers the very best in product quality and choice.  The team work hard to ensure stock availability, and that high standards of plant care and quality are always maintained.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and developing the team. Focus will always be on the customer, though responsibility for driving sales and profitability are also a key part of the role.

The ideal Plantarea Manager will:

Assistant Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen on a private estate close to Haslemere in Surrey, for an Assistant Gardener to focus on the general maintenance aspects of the 10-acre garden, under the direction of a very talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener.  This role would suit a physically fit and experienced maintenance gardener with excellent attention to detail and a desire to take on a full-time permanent role on a stunning private estate.   

The mature 10-acre private garden is situated approximately 1.5-miles from Haslemere train station and comprises expansive lawns, large herbaceous borders, a wildlife pond and associated planting, a collection of rhododendrons, azalea and camellia, greenhouse, and an impressive collection of mature native and exotic trees including a pinetum and surrounding woodland and fields.   

Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence in garden maintenance tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care/mowing, weed control, basic pruning techniques, and the safe operation of a range of garden tools and machinery.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial but are not essential.  The successful applicant will report to the Head Gardener and will complete the small team of three, currently comprising the Head Gardener and one Assistant Gardener.

Applicants for this position should have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible and helpful in their approach to private estate gardening.  Working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 17:00 with a 1-hour lunch break and additional morning break.  The position is offered with 20-days holiday per annum plus Bank Holidays.  Candidates must live within commuting distance of the property as accommodation is not provided.

A unique position has arisen on a beautiful private estate near Winchester for a hands-on experienced Gardener with a talent for creative plant use, to help complete the re-establishment of a garden.  This is a live-in position with a two-bedroom cottage offered to the successful candidate.  

The property itself is surrounded by expansive views and is set within 117 acres of land (used primarily for livestock and managed by a neighbouring farmer) in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, approximately 8-miles east of the historic city of Winchester.  Due to recently completed landscaping work on the site over the last 14 months, the 3-4-acre garden offers huge potential for the next phase that would incorporate creative input of the successful candidate in conjunction with the owners’ ideas.   

Newly established garden features include a flint Ha-ha, terraced lawns, York stone paving, yew hedging, a roomed and walled rose garden with climbers, and an Orangery/garden room.  Existing areas include maturing trees, long grass with mown paths, orchids, and wildflowers in recently sowed meadows.  Plans to plant an orchard are being discussed, so the successful applicant would be involved with this from the start of their employment.  Plans are progressing to establish an intimate cutting garden/kitchen garden for the successful applicant to advance further this year.  An existing swimming pool will require basic maintenance and is now surrounded with new planting.   

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and flexible Head Gardener with good physical fitness and plant knowledge to play a leading role in enriching the classical nature of the re-established gardens.  The property is in a beautiful location, amongst parkland with far reaching views to the South Downs.  

The ideal candidate will hold spray and chainsaw certification and demonstrable gardening experience on private estates and/or horticulturally diverse gardens. Academic horticultural qualifications are desired but are not essential if considerable gardening experience can be demonstrated via previous work and references.  The ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery is essential, as is possession of a full UK driving licence.  Basic Arboriculture knowledge will be of benefit to ensure successful development and care of young trees.

Skilled Gardener

An excellent opportunity for a Skilled Gardener has arisen on an historic private estate in Cambridgeshire.  This role would suit an academically qualified and experienced gardener with a demonstrable background on private estates.  A generous salary is offered in addition to a cottage on site, if required.

At almost 500 years old, the Grade 2 Parkland estate exudes character and plays host to several archaeological features throughout its several hundred acres of land.  A one-acre walled garden is divided into six compartments and includes a parterre, a rose garden and ornamental planting.  The expansive grounds include lawns and a Ha-ha, a lake, mixed and herbaceous beds and borders, hedging, a sculpture garden, glasshouse (hot and cold), terraces and a ½ acre kitchen garden.  Native and specimen trees provide structure and depth to the property, as well as some privacy. 

The welcoming property owners help in the garden in certain areas and are knowledgeable gardeners themselves.  The estate currently benefits from a team of two part-time contract gardeners, with assistance in general maintenance also being on hand.  The need for a full-time Skilled Gardener has arisen, with the candidate to be employed on a full-time permanent basis and to play a key role in the ongoing development and enhancement of the gardens.

The ideal candidate will have at least 5-years’ experience on private estate gardens and an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 2 or above/similar.  Strong plant knowledge and species-specific pruning skills are essential, as is good physical fitness and a willingness to help on the estate wherever necessary. This is a horticulturally focussed role, with enthusiasm and dedication required alongside a positive attitude and a desire to work with the owners and employees in maintaining a positive, happy environment.  Experience in kitchen gardening, rose pruning, bed/border management and the safe operation of a range of garden machinery is required.  Applicants must be happy to carry out the physically demanding aspects of the role, such as hedge cutting, as well as the finer aspects such as plant propagation and glasshouse work.
