An enthusiastic and hands-on Sole Gardener is required on a full time and permanent basis to maintain and develop the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated near Weybridge, Surrey. The property is set within approximately 4 acres and includes various formal lawns, mixed herbaceous planting, formally clipped yew and Buxus, wildflower area, pleached hedging, small vegetable garden, greenhouse, several espalier trained fruit trees and wall trained roses.

The gardens also contain a swimming pool and tennis court which are generally maintained by contractors. This is a sole gardener position; however, the successful candidate will be required to manage additional contractors when required. Although this garden is established there is plenty of opportunity for the new sole gardener to make an impression as the owners are open to new ideas with regards to its development.

The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be confident planning and executing the seasonal maintenance of the gardens. The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and at least 5 years’ experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, soil conditions, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Ideally candidates will have experience maintaining herbaceous borders, topiary, and wildflower meadows. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit, and confident working autonomously.

This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery. Generally, the gardens are maintained without the need for pesticides however, PA1 & PA6 qualifications would be useful for the control of weeds on the hard surfaces.

Previous experience of high end groundskeeping is essential and examples of previous work would be advantageous.

The owners are looking for a fantastic all-rounder who will possess & be able to demonstrate excellent grounds maintenance, lawn care and maintain the garden machinery.

Applicants must have a good working knowledge of cylinder, rotary and ride on mowing. Candidates with PA1/PA6 spraying certificates and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous, however, the owners would be willing to support the training if required.  Attention to detail is important, so is dedication, commitment and genuine pride in a job well done is required of all applicants. A driving licence is required.

Excellent communication skills are a must as you will be working alongside other gardeners. Willingness to be adaptable and flexible in your daily duties is also essential due to the varied nature of the role.

The Skilled gardener will work closely with a knowledgeable and friendly Head Gardener to maintain the garden to a high horticultural standard. He / She will be responsible for the general maintenance such as the mowing, weeding, hedge cutting, strimming and topiary work as well as maintain the specialised areas such as the borders and the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.

The successful applicant will have good horticultural knowledge and technical skills. PA1 / PA6 and chainsaw certificates would be advantageous, however, the owners would be willing to support the training if required.  The gardener will be organised and enjoy working to a high standard. The ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are essential for the role as well as a full UK driving licence.

The position would suit a gardener with a real passion for horticulture and has good attention to detail. He / She will be hands-on, physically fit and have the willingness to continue to grow as a horticulturalist.

We are looking for a skilled gardener, who can contribute towards the creation and maintenance of the gardens and policies. We are at an early and exciting stage in the development and the candidate must be competent in the planting & maintenance of a young and developing garden.

The gardens cover 30 acres and comprise of woodland, meadows and lawns, an arboretum featuring Chilean collection, kitchen garden, polytunnels & glass house, Himalayan Garden and manicured grounds around properties. We are starting to plant the gardens around the new estate house. The role will include work within all these areas.

We also house a collection of conservation importance on behalf of The International Conifer Conservation Program, the ideal candidate will have an understanding of ex-situ conservation collections and their importance.

As a skilled gardener, the candidate will be part of the team working under direction of the head of gardens or first gardener. Ideal skills are.

  • Strong decision making ability.
  • The capacity to work both alone and as part of the team.
  • Working knowledge of machinery use and maintenance.
  • Experience of lawn and ornamental care.
  • Basic propagation skills.
  • Keen to work on the west coast of Scotland and in all weather conditions.

The successful Head Gardener candidate will have excellent plant, pest and diseases identification skills, knowledge of how and when to prune shrubs and trees, how to care for herbaceous borders and experience of planting new gardens. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a confident and experienced Gardener to work within a private Estate in the North Cotswolds.

This is a key position within a recently acquired private Cotswolds Estate that comprises of traditional parkland area, fields and paths, traditional walled garden, kitchen gardens, formal and informal lawns, ponds, orchard, woods, arboretum, bed and borders of large Grade II listed Hall and its various guest houses and cottages.  The successful applicant will work within an existing of four other gardeners and on occasions will be required to assist with general handyperson duties.

Ideally candidates will have proven practical experience working within a private estate. Reporting to and working closely with the Head Gardener the Gardener / Handyperson will be involved in the regular maintenance of the formal gardens, whilst assisting with the ongoing development planned over the coming years. This role would suit someone hands on and able to carry out handyperson duties as and when required. Handyperson duties could range from putting up a shelf in the main house to repairing the boundary fences.

The vision for the estate over the next couple of years is to transition the current farming practices to more to natural wildflower rich fields, meadows, hedgerows with new additional woodlands and wetlands with the objective of increasing flora and fauna diversity.  The owners are keen to move towards self sufficiency and are keen to source produce from the kitchen garden, orchards and through foraging across the wider estate. Therefore, they are open to ideas moving forward to increase the productivity of the estate. Overall, the Gardening team will work with the Kitchen team to utilise the wider ingredients (e.g. Game meats) harvested within the Estate to produce healthy and nutritious meals.
