A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen on a large historic estate near in Dorset, for an experienced gardener in search of a rewarding role within a small team. This role will suit a skilled and practical gardener with 3-5 years’ experience and a genuine love for their profession.
This nationally significant ‘Capability’ Brown site of over 40-acres dates back over 400-years, is open to the public and is Grade 1 listed. The gardens comprise of a wide range of ornamental planting, specimen trees and native woodland, a lake, glasshouse, beds/borders, and expansive areas of lawn.
Reporting to the Gardens Supervisor, the successful candidate will assist in the maintenance of the gardens and grounds and conduct a range of horticultural and landscape maintenance operations. The position would suit a knowledgeable gardener with private estate gardening experience and a strong working knowledge of a range of garden machinery including pedestrian, ride-on and ideally, tractor mounted mowers. The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification, spraying certificate (PA1/PA6) and preferably a chainsaw and UTV certificate, though the latter is not essential at this stage.
Applications are sought from experienced gardeners with academic qualifications, e.g. a National Certificate or the first year of an ND or HND, RHS Level 2, or other qualifications in the theory of horticulture. NPTC PA1/PA6 and a driving licence are essential, with Chainsaw and UTV certifications desired but not essential so long as strong horticultural knowledge can be demonstrated. 3-5 years’ experience of practical horticulture is desired, as is an eye for detail, an ability to work well alone and as part of a team, and a willingness to learn and assist on the estate where necessary to ensure the smooth running of the gardens.
This is a full-time permeant role offering 40-hours per week on a year-round basis, with 29-days’ holiday (including Bank Holidays) and an employer pension contribution. Hours of work are 08:00 – 16:30, Monday to Friday.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Wotton-under-edge in Gloucestershire, for an all-rounded hands-on gardener who enjoys a varied role in the gardens, grounds and carrying out handyperson work. Applicants will either come from a horticultural background or have estate work as the owners would be open to recruiting two candidates to complement each other’s skills. Both must possess the ability and willingness to carry out additional maintenance duties when necessary.
The house is surrounded by nearly 75 acres of parkland, landscaped grounds and a series of themed sunken gardens allowing uninterrupted views. The garden surrounding the property is roughly 11 acres and is divided into 4 key areas: a tropical garden, a Japanese Garden, Mediterranean Garden and a fruit Garden with expansive lawns, lakes, kitchen garden and hedges. At the end of the garden are polytunnels used for propagation and growing a variety of plants for the garden. Organic practices are encouraged on the estate.
The role will involve attending to the needs of the garden, grow vegetables for the main house, carry out planned development projects on the garden, improve planting schemes, maintain around the lakes, and additional maintenance duties such as fixing fences, repair the protection surrounding the trees, power washing and general clearing. The welcoming owner is looking to enjoy the property in the knowledge that it remains in safe and capable hands and is kept to a high standard. The successful applicant will work as part of the overall gardens team - two part time horticulturalists and a groundsperson, on the wider estate. The team plant 5 – 6 trees per year in the parkland and the successful applicant will be involved in this.
This is a hands-on and enjoyable role, so applicants must have a good level of fitness as well as genuine enthusiasm for the impressive property and the wider estate in general. Applicants must have a keen eye for detail, an appreciation of quality, and should have a positive character overall.
The successful applicant will need to be hardworking, flexible and energetic with a genuine passion for gardening and good knowledge of plants. Candidates must have demonstrable hands-on garden experience, preferably within an estate environment. Experience using and the basic maintenance of garden machinery is essential such as various mowers. A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener on a beautiful private estate near Ludlow in Shropshire for 4 days per week on a permanent basis.
The 8-acre garden is part of a large farming and shooting estate and contains specimen trees, a woodland walk, fernery, mixed beds and borders, and an ornamental and productive kitchen garden. The estate utilises the kitchen garden and glasshouses on site to propagate plants for the garden and for sale as well as grow heritage vegetables and cut flowers for the main house, local restaurant and occasionally florist.
The owner is a horticulturalist and is very passionate about their garden. They have a vision for the garden and are keen to bring onboard an experienced gardener to drive the garden forward. The gardens are open to the public a couple of times per year to raise money for charity and occasionally to private groups. The owner would like to increase this with time. The successful applicant will work closely with the owner and will work alongside two other gardeners who carry out the general maintenance on the estate allowing the experienced gardener to focus on the finer horticultural aspects of the garden.
Applicants for this vacancy must have extensive hands-on experience working in a private or public garden with comprehensive knowledge of a range of garden plants and their maintenance. They will preferably hold an academic horticultural qualification as well as being someone with a love of gardening who takes pride in their work. Applicants will be hardworking and physically fit, with the willingness to contribute to the smooth running and development of the garden and estate.
The Experienced Gardener must be willing and able to carry out all aspects of estate gardening including pruning, plant propagation, planting, weeding, and general garden maintenance duties. Possession of a chainsaw certificate would be beneficial, but not essential as contractors are engaged for the tree work. This role is an exciting opportunity to work as part of a small and enthusiastic team to continue to develop and maintain the estate’s stunning grounds and gardens and together with the assistant gardener be responsible for the mature, private 2-acre walled garden. The walled garden features glasshouses, a fruit cage, vegetable beds, cut flower beds, mature fruit trees, herbaceous border, rose garden, mature yew hedging, box hedges, water features, ornamental trees, shrubs and perennial flowers.
Duties include full management and together with the assistant gardener upkeep of the walled garden and glasshouses, growing of organic vegetables and cut flowers from seed to serve the needs of the house and holiday cottages and growing perennial plants and shrubs from seed and by propagation to continue to develop and enhance the gardens. The gardener will work alongside the groundskeeper / gardener on the maintenance and development of historic rock gardens, meadows and ponds and support with the maintenance and development of holiday cottage gardens on the estate.
Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification and a chainsaw safety, cross cutting and tree felling certificate to assist alongside Estate Groundskeepers on the winter woodland management, including planting, felling, pruning, and wood chipping/ log cutting. A passion and experience or qualification in garden design and permaculture would be advantageous. The successful candidate will work well in a team and have the ability and willingness to support and train student gardeners on summer placements, junior groundskeeper/ gardeners and host gardening courses and workshops with members of the public. Attention to detail, good housekeeping and timekeeping are important as well as a high level of maintenance of plants, equipment and tools.
This position would suit an experienced and passionate person who can commit to the maintenance and development of the gardens and grounds, who works well as part of a team. A passion for biodiversity, team working and growing vegetables and flowers from seed is essential.

- To ensure that the mechanical condition and security of vehicles and machinery used in operations is maintained in a safe and secure manner and that any defects, damage or breakdowns are reported promptly
- Ability to respond to emergency situations in a calm and decisive manner
- Ability to communicate in a clear and polite manner with colleagues, clients and members of the public.
- To work outdoors at all times of the year in all weather conditions
- To understand work requirements and work to deadlines.
Other preferable skills are UK drivers’ license with BE entitlement (trailer) and first aid certification.
Where the employee is qualified to drive company vehicles and tow company trailers, he/she may be required to carry out the following additional duties:
- To drive any Company vehicle in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and Company procedures.
- To clean vehicles and plant assigned to you and keep the vehicle in a tidy condition.
- To ensure vehicles and plant are prepared ready for out of hours emergencies.
- To perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicles, as necessary.
- Ability to undertake basic vehicle checks and to identify maintenance needs.
