The property is set within approximately 4 acres and includes various formal lawns, mixed herbaceous planting, formally clipped yew and Buxus, wildflower area, pleached hedging, small vegetable garden, greenhouse, several espalier trained fruit trees and wall trained roses.
The gardens also contain a swimming pool and tennis court which are generally maintained by contractors. This is a sole gardener position; however, the successful candidate will be required to manage additional contractors when required. Although this garden is established there is plenty of opportunity for the new sole gardener to make an impression as the owners are open to new ideas with regards to its development.
The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be confident planning and executing the seasonal maintenance of the gardens. The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and at least 5 years’ experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, soil conditions, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Ideally candidates will have experience maintaining herbaceous borders, topiary, and wildflower meadows. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit, and confident working autonomously.

An exciting vacancy has emerged for an ambitious and driven individual to join a small gardening team on a prestigious, yet discrete private estate in West Oxfordshire. Working closely alongside the existing team, as well as wider estate staff, the successful candidate will assist in the maintenance of the gardens of the house, ancillary properties and outlying family accommodation to achieve the highest horticultural standards possible year round.
This is a substantial Estate comprising arable and livestock farming, woodlands, 150 acres of parkland and a number of residential properties. The private gardens surrounding the main house cover roughly 8-acres including a walled garden, rose garden, large amounts of topiary, herbaceous borders, formal lawns, a lake, and a greenhouse. A Kitchen Garden is currently in developmental stages with a view to produce a range fruit and vegetables on a small scale for the main house in the near future; therefore, those with experience and a keen interest in kitchen gardening are urged to apply. In addition to the main house, there are also 3 other large properties and some community gardens which are less formal but still maintained to a very high standard.
The main duties of the Gardener/Groundsperson will include border maintenance, grass cutting, pruning, hedge trimming, strimming, spraying, lake management, leaf clearance, care of garden furniture including ornaments and other gardening tasks associated with an estate garden of this stature. Applicants for this role will hold their PA1/PA6 spraying certificates, alongside a valid chainsaw certificate. A recognised horticultural qualification is advantageous, but not essential; however a keen interest and passion for horticulture is a must.
The Client is keen to promote a friendly and rewarding working environment, being willing to support the successful candidate in the development of their skills and experience in order to advance in the country house garden sector, including the opportunity for relevant professional and personal development training.
The estate owns a portfolio of properties on the estate, therefor accommodation is available on site if the successful candidate wishes to occupy a rental property.

Our client seeks a highly skilled Gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis. Applicants should ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as an RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with several years’ experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in propagation. General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, planting, weeding, mowing, strimming, and edging. The owners are open to ideas the Gardener will have with regards to the improvement and development of the gardens.
In addition to gardening responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to be fully competent in maintenance and Groundsperson activities, which include but are not limited to, power washing the paths and driveway, monitoring irrigation, leaf blowing, raking, digging, managing compost and providing logs for the main house. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is also flexible in their work to provide assistance around the house when required. Other general duties will include occasional chauffeuring and valeting of the owners’ cars when needed as well as taking them for MOT’s and services.
Management of external contractors will be an additional feature of this position and therefore previous experience in doing so will be advantageous for prospective candidates. An excellent opportunity has arisen on a private estate in Surrey, for an experienced Gardener to focus on the general maintenance aspects of the 12-acre garden, under the direction of a very talented and knowledgeable Head Gardener. This role would suit a physically fit and experienced gardener with excellent attention to detail and a desire to take on a full-time permanent role on a stunning private estate. There is scope for modernising and developing the garden, therefore candidates with thoughts and ideas with regards to improving the garden are welcome.
The mature 12-acre private garden is situated approximately 1.5 miles from Haslemere train station and comprises expansive lawns, mixed herbaceous and shrub borders, a natural pond and associated planting, a collection of rhododendrons, azalea, and camellia. Also, within the historic garden is a mature pinetum with an impressive selection of native and exotic trees including conifers, sequoias, mature pines and much more. A truly impressive collection of trees with at least 20 champion trees which are recognised by The Tree Register. The gardens also once featured 1920’s Gertrude Jekyll rock garden and hot border, of which the backbone of the original design still remains. Surrounding the house is a variety of grasses with mixed herbaceous. They are trying to modernise the area around the house going down to the existing garden to blend in with the existing mature garden. There is also a greenhouse which is used for propagating when required and storing plants for container displays.
Applicants for this position should be able to demonstrate experience and competence in garden maintenance tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care/mowing, weed control, basic pruning techniques, and the safe operation of a range of garden tools and machinery. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates are desirable but are not essential. The successful applicant will report to the Head Gardener and will complete the small team of three, currently comprising the Head Gardener and one Assistant Gardener.
Applicants for this position should have experience in each of the above areas and must be flexible and helpful in their approach to private estate gardening. The grounds and gardens contain steep terrain; therefore candidates must be physically fit and happy to work outside in all weathers. Our client and its sister company, specialise in the Design and Build of luxury residential Gardens and Landscape projects in the super prime residential market. As a company renowned within the industry, they are expected to deliver faultless service standards to the most discerning of clientele. Growth of the aftersales and client care division requires the strengthening of the Project delivery teams on site with the appointment of a Maintenance Team Leader for projects predominantly in West London, but occasionally extending into the home counties.
Job Brief
Your role will be to nurture a positive and pleasant work environment, ensuring high levels of effectiveness and communication within the office team and with the clients. As Maintenance Team Leader, your responsibilities will include the day-to-day client care and effective management of the projects within your maintenance round. This will involve having overall personal responsibility for maintaining gardens in a truly bespoke fashion, individual to each client. Our client focuses solely on private residential projects and as such the client care element and the ability to maintain the projects in a faultless condition is the sole responsibility of the Team Leader. This will include managing the direct employees of the team, as well as the specialist sub-contractors required to service the bespoke elements of the gardens and deliver the gardens to the company’s exemplary and demanding quality plans.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to produce monthly reports for the clients, and record progress within the gardens. A successful Maintenance Team Leader should also have experience with a variety of office software including e-mail tools and be enthusiastic about learning new skills in a dynamic and creative working environment. The successful candidate should have at least 5-7 years’ experience of maintaining private gardens in a luxury market, including 3-5 years in a similar role as a team leader. A complete understanding of horticulture along with appropriate qualifications is essential. A good working knowledge of pests and diseases is essential in being able to apply this knowledge in real life applications.
Candidate Skills
Ultimately the Maintenance Team Leader should be able to ensure the smooth running of the portfolio and contribute to the organisational effectiveness of the company while managing a small team of 1-2 people. Strong organisational skills and time management along with a natural proficiency in written and verbal communication will be an integral part of the successful candidate’s skill set as well as being able to work calmly and efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Monday to Friday 08:00am - 5:00pm
