An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic gardener to be part of a team who care for the gardens and grounds surrounding a magnificent property in Somerset.

This is an idyllic setting with stunning views across the valley with many magnificent and unusual specimen trees, as well as sweeping lawns which slope down to a heart shaped lake. There is an enclosed formal garden next to the main property, shrubbery, pergola with wisteria, walled formal garden in an Italianate style, box hedges and topiary work and a rose-bower garden.  There are also two vegetable gardens, a cut flower garden, orchard and three heated greenhouses used for propagation.  The property is well equipped with a range of garden machinery.

This is a “hands-on” position and the gardens and grounds are maintained to a high standard.  Suitable candidates will have some horticultural knowledge and a genuine interest in herbaceous plants, shrubs, basic pruning techniques, and the ability to identify weeds.  Experience with propagating, planting, weeding and general plant care of flowers, fruits and shrubs would be beneficial. Spray certificates PA1 and PA6 would also be an advantage but training can be provided by the owners.  Applicants with experience in common garden machinery use is desired; strimmers, mowers and blowers. 

This position will report to Head Gardener and there are currently two other gardeners working onsite. Candidates should have a positive attitude towards their work and colleagues, be reliable, punctual, physically fit, and well presented.  He / She should be prepared to work outside in all weathers and have the determination and drive to get the job done to a high standard. Applicants will ideally hold a full UK driving licence.

Our client is Grade 1 eighteenth century landscape garden of great importance. The garden is set in a wooded valley and covers 158 acres with a serpentine lake, a Chinese bridge, a walled garden, vineyard, ruined abbey, a Turkish tent and a remarkable grotto. The restoration of the garden began in the 1980’s with the aim to restore this “living work of art” and now is enjoyed by the public.

As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the garden and surroundings are maintained to a high standard. You’ll become driven, passionate and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden and its significant position within history. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of vegetables, vines, annuals, trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

As a member of the team you’ll also support garden volunteers/students and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering questions and passing the time of day. Helping out with gardening workshops, tours and the setting up/take down of events when needed.

The ideal candidate will have good plant knowledge and have a minimum of 3 years practical experience, ideally on a historic garden. A horticultural qualification is beneficial but not essential, and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage.  Candidates must be presentable, positive in their approach and comfortable with participating in garden activities, events and interaction with visitors. A rare and interesting opportunity has arisen for a River Keeper/ Estate Gardener/ Water Bailiff to join a Paper Mill Estate within the heart of the Kent countryside.

Our client owns a fishery which includes course and trout fishing lakes as well as river fishing and clay shooting. The 26-acre estate comprises a Trout Lake, Coarse Fishery, River, Woodland and Lawn. They currently seek an enthusiastic and driven River Keeper/Estate Gardener/ Water Bailiff to maintain the fishery, as well as carry out other general gardening and maintenance duties around the estate.

The successful candidate will maintain the garden consisting of grass, flower beds, trees, hedges, gates and fences on site. He / She will be responsible for the security of the house and fisheries site including the care park and fire station. Controlling the levels of the River and the Lakes is part of the role and must be managed at all times, therefore the candidate is responsible for the handover of this duty to a specific individual when leaving the site. He / She will test the fire pump, hydrants and fire hoses on the site in conjunction with the Mill Engineer.

In additional, the successful candidate will be responsibility for all mowers, boats, tools and equipment owned by the client. He / She will manage the upkeep and maintenance of the stock, fishery and shooting grounds including vermin control. Other duties may be necessary for the smooth running of the estate, the fishery and Shooting Grounds including maintenance of the swimming pool. He / She will assist in the organising and the running of corporate let days as well as the organising and leading of working parties to carry out specific tasks at the fishery / shooting grounds.

You must be able to use your own initiative, work efficiently and should be able to use a chainsaw, back pack sprayer, tractor mower and be able to swim. He / She will be dog friendly as they would be expected to look after the owner’s dogs in their absence.

The position requires being based on site therefore a 2-bedroom unfurnished cottage is offered with this opportunity. All bills including council tax, water and electricity are the responsibility of the tenant. Logs to fuel the central heating boiler may be gathered from the estate.

The Rota (Hours and days of work) will be mutually agreed in advance and set on a weekly / monthly basis.  You will be entitled to four weeks paid holiday per annum in addition to the Statutory Bank Holidays. Should any of these need to be worked, time off in lieu will be given.
