Skilled Gardener - Live In - EC3827

A rare opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced gardener to join a small friendly team on a private estate in Bavaria, Germany.  The garden is currently being managed by an English Head Gardener couple, though the new employee must have a reasonable grasp of the spoken German language.

The stunning privately-owned 12th century castle estate covers approximately 14 acres in Bavaria.  The estate also owns a brewery, game shooting sites and a farm, though the new gardener will be based in the main estate gardens on a permanent basis.  The property owners are not permanent residents of the estate, though they are very passionate about the gardens and like to be involved in the overall planning and decision-making when possible.

The 12-15 acre garden is predominantly laid to lawn, with large wildflower areas currently being developed.  The garden comprises areas of woodland, formal lawns, clipped hedges, pleached trees and topiary, a rose garden, herbaceous and mixed borders, ponds and streams, a swimming pool and a small greenhouse and nursery area.

The ideal candidate will possess experience of each of the above, an academic horticultural qualification with good experience of hands-on gardening on private estates or large gardens.  Training will be provided for passionate gardeners to improve their existing skill set and knowledge, though applicants must have good plant knowledge, be physically fit, and must be able to operate a range of garden machinery competently.  Routine responsibilities will include general garden maintenance, pruning, planting, turfing, hedge cutting and general seasonal horticultural duties.

The candidate must be willing to commit to the role on a long term basis, have a good comprehension of the German language and be able to converse confidently.  The new Experienced Gardener should be able to take charge of the garden and Under Gardeners at times when the Head Gardener is absent.  Candidates should possess a driving licence and ideally, have experience of driving tractors and trailers.  Assistance will be required with non-gardening tasks at times.

Working hours are typically 07:30 – 16:30 with a one hour lunch break.  Expected seasonal variation to these hours will apply in relation to weather and daylight hours.

The Aldingbourne Country Centre is located on the edge of the South Downs National Park - we grow and sell a range of bedding plants to members of the public at our established visitor attraction that draws over 60,000 visitors a year. The Aldingbourne Centre provides vocational training for people with learning disabilities (our clients) across a range of activities including working in our gardens and greenhouses.

We are looking for a person with experience in growing and selling plants in a commercial setting to carry out the following duties:

  • Grow bedding plants in green houses
  • Buy plugs and grow them on to bed plant stage
  • Display the plants in attractive ways for customers to view and buy
  • Talk to customers about the plants
  • Supervise clients' working and assisting in the greenhouses and gardens
  • Maintain Aldingbourne's grounds, including planting our own plants in the beds around the site and trimming hedges, cutting back trees occasionally etc

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Commercial experience of growing and selling plants (perhaps you will have worked in a garden centre or horticultural business)
  • Have an understanding of financials regarding buying, growing on and selling of plants
  • Be happy speaking to customers
  • Have a kind and understanding nature in supporting our clients. You do not need to have experience in a care role - provided you have a kind nature and are willing to be guided in working alongside our clients we will provide training in this aspect of the role.

The role will have some staff supervision responsibilities as you will manage our gardener/horticultural support staff member.

You will be required to develop excellent working relationships with Country Centre staff, volunteers, the people we support and visitors to the Country Centre. You will be supported by the Senior Support with responsibility for Horticulture, Events, Farm and Retail and the Country Centre team.

Due to the nature of this role, some weekend working is required including public holidays. Rotas will be agreed on a monthly rolling basis.

Head Gardener - EC3747

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Head / Senior Gardener to manage an existing team in Tonbridge, Kent.  The position would suit senior gardeners with demonstrable staff and garden management experience and excellent attention to detail.

The expansive gardens encompass sports fields, mature trees and shrubs, mixed beds and borders, manicured lawns, ponds, tennis courts, mixed hedges, as well as numerous paths and hardstanding.  Numerous greenhouses are located within the site and as such, development and plant propagation will also be the responsibility of the new Head Gardener.  In addition to the main grounds, approximately 20 small gardens will require scheduled management by the garden team.

The successful applicant will be able to provide supervision and guidance to a small team and will report to the Commercial and Operations Director on a regular basis in relation to seasonal plans and overall improvement of the gardens.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience and confidence in the management of garden budgets, planning and scheduling, external contractors, health and safety, and associated record keeping.  A basic level of computer literacy is required in order to ensure the above records and processes are managed efficiently.  Basic knowledge of Arboriculture would also be of benefit.

The new Head Gardener will be able to appoint landscape architects and associated contractors, ensuring correct checks are in place and with a view to developing the site through major projects.  The development work will be overseen by the Head Gardener in order to ensure the quality of work is to specification and within budget.

Applicants should hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification as well as spray (PA1/6) and ideally a chainsaw certificate (CS30/31).  Experience with a full range of garden machinery is required, i.e. hedge cutters, ride-on and pedestrian mowers, blowers etc.  Candidates should be capable of carrying out annual reviews of the garden team members and will be an effective manager in terms of staff development and discipline.  A good level of physical fitness is required as this is a hands-on garden management role.
