Retail Sales Assistant – Vacancy
Job Purpose:
We are seeking a proactive and people-focused Retail Sales Assistant to provide retail cover three days a week, to include alternate weekends, in our retail shop and external retail area assisting and serving our customers and working alongside our Team Members and Friends to increase sales and provide great customer service. The retail area offers great quality plants, indoor plants and horticultural supplies so a passion and basic understanding of plants and gardening is vital for this role. Occasionally taking over responsibility for the site in the absence of the Retail Sales Supervisor or other senior staff.
A core part of this role is championing the charity’s mission—clearly communicating and promoting the connection between plant sales and the support of adult mental health through therapeutic horticulture. You will help translate this purpose into a compelling retail experience that resonates with customers and encourages ongoing support.

Main Responsibilities:
Shop
- Supervise a small team Friends of the Charity in the absence of senior staff
- Support Team Members working in retail
- Liaise with the Retail Supervisor and create displays in the shop
- Balance and manage tills, cash and chip and pin machines
Retail Area
- Top up of A-Z in partnership with nursery staff
- Liaise with the Retail Supervisor and create vibrant and seasonal plant displays
- Be readily available to assist customers and answer queries in person, via email and telephone
General
- Daily inspection of the retail area to maintain quality control and stock levels, checking watering needs and identifying potential tasks for that day
- Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety law
- Assist with event preparation
- Attend staff meetings, training days and events which may be outside of normal hours
- Open and close the site at weekends in the absence of senior staff
- Take responsibility for the nursery in the absence of senior staff
- Adhere to Plants and Minds Policies
Team Members
- Awareness of the needs of our Team members and their welfare.
- Understanding of Professional Boundaries
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
- Retail experience, ideally with a garden centre or similar
- Strong customer service and complaint handling skills
- Attention to detail
- Financial understanding and accountability of the retail area
- Willingness to learn
- Ability to multitask and prioritise
- Interest in plants and gardening
- Experience or interest in mental health
- To have an overall understanding of the charity and their role within it
DESIRABLE SKILLS
- Full UK Driving Licence and own transport
Salary: £15,000
Hours: Part time 22.5hours per week
