The Project
The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden is a new botanic garden that curates its Living Collection in designed landscapes, shaped and constructed using natural rock and water features, engineering and earth moving. A collaboration including the estate team, designers, botanists and other specialists ensure that each landscape provides experiences and opportunities for learning, conservation and enjoyment. The wider estate continues to enhance the countryside by creating and establishing wildlife habitats that will define specific areas as well as developing a program of creating sustainable, regenerative systems for the environment and edible crops.
Role Summary
A Landscape Supervisor is needed to support the continual development of its landscapes, growth of the Living Collection and creation of a large, professional team. Reporting to a Landscape Manager, the Landscape Supervisor will be hands on, applying their knowledge and experience to a wide range of work including plant introduction and establishment, garden maintenance and mentoring. They will also be required to maintain digital records, help with procurement and be involved with team decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with coordinating work programmes and initiatives to achieve specific objectives.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and visitors.
- Ensure adherence with the SBG SOPs.
- Contribute to decision-making, work planning and scheduling.
- Provide empathetic, professional guidance to team members.
- Operate construction and horticultural machinery and equipment.
- Participate in relevant training.
- Undertake work-related travel.
- Contribute to staff performance reviews and appraisals.
- Assist with updating health and safety practices and ensure adherence to company Health and Safety Policy.
- Participate in education, training and mentoring programs for SBG staff and visitors.
- Drive a vehicle on public highways and estate land
Qualifications and Experience
Hold a relevant academic qualification, ideally to level 5 (HND)
Have 3-5 years of experience in a notable landscape, garden or commercial business, such experience to include personnel management
Understand large landscape maintenance
Possess competent knowledge of temperate plants and their requirements
Have a good understanding of soils and management techniques
Show dynamic methods of mentoring to encourage progress and professionalism
Demonstrate drive, determination and adaptability to achieve success
The successful candidate will need a full UK driving licence as the role involves working at different sites.
