From English Country Gardeners
Working For: English Country Gardeners
An enthusiastic and hands-on Sole Gardener is required on a full time and permanent basis to maintain and develop the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated near Fawley, Hampshire. The previous Sole Gardener who was with the family for 35-years has now since retired, therefore the family are now looking for their successor on a full time, permanent basis.
Located on the banks of the Solent, with breath-taking views of the Isle of White, the property has been with the same family for over 250 years, passing through 7 generations. The garden is part of a wider estate of 2,500 acres. The 10-acre gardens boast Capability Brown’s smallest surviving pleasure ground that sits directly on the shingle banks. Browns original plans show the house encircled by a planting of trees and shrubs and was adapted to suit the coastal conditions. Following the storm of 1987 an extensive programme was put in place to restore the gardens to Browns design and to replant them authentically, using the original drawings.
Within the grounds are two Victorian walled gardens; encapsulating the first walled garden is the longest surviving glass fruit house in Hampshire which has recently been restored. A now substantial kitchen garden that feeds the family all year round, and that has been organically grown over 10 years growing fruits such as apricots, white peaches, and nectarines as well as 4 muscat grape vines. The second walled garden acts as a gardener’s parterre housing rare and interesting trees and shrubs. Outside the walled gardens are expansive lawns with Cedars of Lebanon and a collection of oaks which can be seen from the woodland paths, as well as flurries of wildflower meadows.
The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, soil conditions, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Experience maintaining herbaceous borders, shrubs and a strong knowledge of kitchen gardening is required. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit, and confident working autonomously.
This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery. Additional duties will include the care of chickens and pets when the principles aren’t in residence. Occasional chauffeuring for the family will be a requirement for this role, therefore a full clean driver’s licence is essential.
A cottage is provided rent free with the position should the successful candidate require. The property has 1 main bedroom with an additional room which can be used as a small single bedroom or a study. Council tax, and water will be covered by the employer whilst electricity will be the responsibility of the tenant. The gate house contains a log burner and storage heaters and comes with its own garden for the gardener to enjoy. Please note white goods are not included with the property.
