Skilled Gardener

From English Country Gardeners

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join the gardens of a residential property located near Hindon, Wiltshire. The owner now requires an experienced gardener with a proven track record of working within a large and horticulturally diverse garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds. This is a permanent role, based on a 5-day week.

The beautiful gardens have been created over 60 years by previous and current owner who is a keen horticulturalist. The 9-acre garden is evenly divided between cultivated gardens near the house and ancient woodland behind it. Southeast facing it warms up quickly in spring, bringing early bluebells each year. The gardens boast extensive herbaceous borders, plantings of rhododendrons, maples, camellias, azaleas and many other small trees and shrubs. There is a woodland garden with a stately row of magnolias, a French garden edged by yew hedges, low box hedging and finely shaped topiary. Also within the grounds is a cutting garden dominated by roses for much of the year, bred by the late David Austin, but the planting is informal and they are mixed with dahlias and peonies; this is adjoined to the immaculate potager. The old croquet lawn has been converted into a formal garden of lavender-filled parterres with a long reflecting pool, lined by Persian ironwood trees.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, kitchen gardening, specialist pruning, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. The owner is passionate about their garden and open to the public each year through the National Garden Scheme, therefore they want like minded people to help showcase the gardens.

A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large mature English country garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work within a small and friendly team and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery is essential as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification being desirable for this position.

A 2-bedroom cottage on site is available to the successful candidate with partners, dependants and pets welcome (within reason); with all bills covered for by the owners besides electricity and oil.

This role is based on a 5-day week with working hours 8am – 4pm, however there is some flexibility with the hours.
