An experienced, enthusiastic and responsible Head Gardener is required to work in a private garden near Andover.  It is an extremely exciting opportunity to be involved in a site that is both an existing landscape as well as a new project.

The garden requires work to bring selected elements back into shape. They will have the chance to have an input into the setting up of some of the supporting garden infrastructure (e.g. contribute to the internal layout of the Machine Store). Some parts of the garden are also currently under construction, so they will be joining the project during the on-going implementation phase. The candidate should have strong horticultural knowledge, as well as extensive experience in both administrative and practical management of gardens and landscapes throughout the year and proven supervisory experience.

The position is fulltime, and they will be required to work with and manage other garden staff and coordinate with external contractors, as required, for specialist horticultural projects. They will be expected to manage, programme and oversee any external maintenance and service contractors for items such as the irrigation, cascades, water features, lighting, energy systems etc. It will also be necessary for them to gain a working understanding of the relevant equipment for day-to-day management. They will be expected to keep up-to-date records and daily diaries accordingly.

The site incorporates existing woodland, which has been enhanced with recent planting, mature specimen trees, veteran trees, and arboretum, mixed shrub and herbaceous borders, formal and informal planting, formal lawns, hedges, cascades, formal water features and a working walled garden planted for both produce and cut flowers with a mixed zone greenhouse, including one for houseplants and display plants. There will be a working compost area and they should be comfortable around animals, including horses.

The successful candidate will be expected to maintain the grounds to the highest horticultural standards throughout the seasons and have a sound understanding of general garden machinery, their uses and maintenance.  They should be willing to undertake training as required and have qualifications in spraying (PA1 and PA6). Hedge-cutting and chainsaw use would be an advantage. They should be good at budget planning and have a comprehensive understanding of the relevant Health and Safety Regulations, environmental management, manual handling and risk assessment.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be self-motivated, capable of working as part of a team and have a valid driving license.
