Our client is excited to open a newly established plant nursery and retail site focused on growing, sourcing and supplying a range of high-quality plants for residential and commercial landscaping projects. This ambitious new business is a joint venture between two established and successful companies, who together see a strong opportunity for growth in a new market. They are looking for a motivated, commercial and customer-focused Retail Manager to join them on this opportunity and to grow with the business.
Position Overview:
As the Retail Manager, you will be responsible for the smooth and efficient day-to-day running of all retail aspects of the business. This is a hands-on management role where you will lead a small team and ensure an exceptional service, delivering strong sales performance and seamless operations.
The ideal candidate will have experience in a nursery or retail environment, a strong background in sales, and a passion for plants. You will be a proactive, collaborative and dynamic manager with the ability to compile quotes, manage stock, and drive sales growth. A strong leadership presence is key, as well as the ability to foster a positive and productive work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee all day-to-day operations of the retail business
- Direction of a small, well organised and motivated team
- Actively drive sales through excellent customer service, upselling, and creating a customer-first culture.
- Generate quotes for customers (both retail and trade), ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with customers and suppliers.
- Efficient stock handling both inwards and out – Manage stock levels, order new stock, and ensure proper product rotation
- Implementing processes to ensure the business runs and develops smoothly
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment for both staff and customers
- Working with Directors to implement the business model, review performance and continually improve what we do
- Ensure all health and safety regulations are adhered to, ensuring a safe working environment for staff and customers.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Proven experience in a nursery, garden centre, or retail management role.
- Strong sales skills, with a proven ability to drive revenue and meet sales targets.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and previous experience of leading a team
- Be self-motivated, trustworthy and ready for a challenge
- Bring a strong plant knowledge and plant husbandry skills
- Have equally strong IT skills and confidence using Excel
- Basic financial acumen, including experience with budgets and sales reporting.
- Always be commercial
- Experience of online retail is a bonus
Working Hours:
45 hours per week – Monday to Saturday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with occasional flexibility required for special events or seasonal demands.
SALARY: circa £40,000 DOE
