The 50-acre property comprises beautiful gardens and grounds including equestrian facilities; stables, a hay barn, paddocks and a ménage, and surrounding farmland.  The 9-acre formal aspect of the gardens comprise expansive areas of lawn, mature trees, mixed/herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, lakes, woodland, ponds, a variety of ornamental planting and plans for a glasshouse.  Although the majority of the grounds are well established, there are plans for the development of the gardens and grounds as a whole.

The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of garden/grounds maintenance as well as any developments making the role varied and exciting.   This position would suit an enthusiastic gardener with a strong work ethic and good attention to detail.  Excellent plant knowledge and garden maintenance skills are required.

Typical duties will include lawn care, pond and water feature care, general pruning, planting, hedge cutting, weeding, establishing and tending a kitchen garden, maintenance of boundaries/fences and more.  Applicants should be well-versed in the operation of garden machinery, i.e. hedge cutters, mowers and petrol-powered strimmers, blowers etc.  An academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 2, spray certificates (PA1/6) and chainsaw licence are desired but are not essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced gardener to join a stunning private estate.  Standard working hours of work are 08:00-16:00 Monday-Friday.  Salary is offered commensurate with experience.  Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence and their own transport, as the estate is located rurally.

Head Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join one of the country’s most beautiful gardens on a full-time permanent basis.  This position will suit an experienced Senior Gardener looking to take the next step in their career, or an existing Head Gardener with a desire to take on a large and diverse garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.  The successful applicant will work closely with the property owner on all aspects of the garden and its management, including conducting private tours for the public on open days.

Set within 80-acres of meadows and ancient woodland, the all-seasons garden comprise stunning herbaceous borders, a potager, kitchen garden, woodland rockery and a Japanese garden, with a vast array of ornamental species and features, each thoughtfully planted throughout eight acres of formal garden.  The gardens are open to visitors, with numbers constantly growing as a result of excellent management and the resulting exposure in numerous publications, features, and on television.

The gardens are meticulously planned and managed to ensure efficiency and maintenance of the highest standards of horticulture and presentation.  The small team are proud of the garden and work closely together with clearly assigned duties and responsibilities.

This new opportunity will suit an experienced and qualified horticulturist with excellent attention to detail, with garden planning and staff supervision experience.  The successful applicant will work with and report to the owner and co-creator of the gardens and as such, the role will suit a senior level gardener looking for a step up in their career.  Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with an ability to lead a small team of assistants and volunteers in close collaboration with the Grounds Manager and Garden Administrator.

Suitable applicants will possess academic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant identification and management skills.  The Head Gardener and owner will share the responsibility for guided tours and visiting groups while ensuring health and safety standards are met.  Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is desired, including tractors and attachments, chemical spray certificates, chainsaw operation, garden budget management experience and confidence/interest in public speaking.

Working hours typically range between 08:00 – 15:00/16:30 depending on the season and planned events.

Job description

Working with the Client Services Team, you will assist the Senior Parks and Greenspace Officer with the day to day monitoring and organisation of the work on open spaces, verges and parks including dealing with contractors, forward planning, refurbishment projects, events in parks, play areas, tree and shrub management, GIS mapping systems, budget control and all other aspects of open space management.

There will be the occasional need to assist with enforcement issues such as abandoned cars, fly tipping and PSPO’s.

Key Skills

The successful candidate will need a relevant qualification in Horticulture or substantial experience in Horticulture (or a closely related subject). Previous experience in dealing with customers/public in a relevant field of Horticulture/Landscape would be beneficial plus lots of enthusiasm and a flexible approach to work.
