An enthusiastic and hands-on Senior Gardener is required to manage the gardens of a beautiful private estate situated between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells. This is an exciting position for someone looking to be an integral part of the ongoing design, development and maintenance of the gardens and grounds of the estate.
This historic country house is part of an estate spanning 75 acres, including extensive gardens and woodland. Surrounding this stunning property, the formal gardens include herbaceous borders, informal and formal plantings, with formal and informal lawns, a walled kitchen garden, glasshouse, fruit and specimen tree planting, arboreta, and parkland.
The gardens are currently mid-way through a period of enhancement and redesign, working with an external landscape designer, with the intent to bring the private gardens up to the very highest horticultural standard. The owner is now seeking a Senior Gardener who will work closely on managing and enhancing the extensive garden and associated grounds.
The ideal candidates will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with a friendly disposition. They will be self-motivated as well as possessing the initiative to work with and supervise the other full-time gardener. They will possess the initiative to plan and complete projects in consultation with the estate owners, working as part of a team in a family environment. The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and prioritising the garden work schedule and ensure that they are compliant with Health and safety at all times.
Applicants must have thorough knowledge of plant types and excellent plant identification skills. Experience with various planting schemes as well as detailed knowledge of tree, lawn and plant maintenance is essential. They will have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and be confident with their specialist knowledge such as pest and disease management and nutritional deficiencies. Demonstrable experience of managing a large private garden, with all that entails including coordinating external contractors where appropriate will be important. Duties will include maintenance of the grounds to the highest standards therefore a sound knowledge of garden machinery and their use and maintenance is important. PA1/PA6 spraying certificates are required and CS30/31 chainsaw certificates would be an advantage for basic tree work.

Assistant Gardener
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a hands-on Assistant Gardener to join an internationally renowned site based in West Sussex. This role would suit a horticulturist with drive and a positive character.
Set within 13-acres of gardens, the formal aspect comprises 6-acres around the manor house. A small cottage garden within the grounds is also to be maintained in addition to the above. Garden features within the estate gardens comprise a kitchen garden, wildflower areas, a cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage, an orchard, cloud-pruned box hedging, topiary, a formal courtyard, a large pond and surrounding woodland. The garden areas of the estate are not managed organically, though chemical use is kept to a minimum. Plans are in place to develop two large areas in addition to a significant spend on new planting.
The Assistant Gardener will report into the Facilities Manager and work under the guidance of the Senior Gardener. He / She will be responsible for the general maintenance and development to create a garden environment that is secure and enjoyable experience for residents, guests, and visitors. Key Responsibilities will include; maintaining the formal and informal garden areas, including the herbaceous borders, vegetable & cut flower garden, hedges, formal lawns, pot displays and the formal and informal lawn care, e.g. mowing, edging, feeding, scarifying, aerating, watering, and weeding. The role will be to maintain all areas to the highest standard of horticulture and presentation and that its unique character and excellence is preserved for the benefit of guests and visitors.
The position also entails; working at height to maintain climbers, hedges and trees across the gardens. There is a range of planting and plant care to be carried out as instructed by the Senior Gardener, including topiary pruning of Box and Yew hedging. The gardens, thoroughfares and footpaths are kept clear and free from litter and particular attention is paid to the preparation of the estate for days when the CEO is in residence or for particular events, keeping disturbance to a minimum during these times.
Applicants will have good plant knowledge, ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and a minimum of one years’ experience in private estate gardens and/or horticulturally diverse public gardens. Candidates must be confident in their use and basic maintenance of garden machinery including strimmers, brush cutters, hedge trimmer, pedestrian and ride on mowers, and small tractors and trailers as well as maintaining the irrigation system. The assistant gardener will work within the health and safety standards. Chemical spray certificates (PA1/6) are desirable.
Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden are required, as is the ability to work well with a small team; with diplomacy and a constructive approach. A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is located rurally.

Experienced Gardener
An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced gardener to maintain a stunning 15-acre estate in West Sussex, situated between East Grinstead and Ardingly. The grounds to the estate were laid out in the 1930’s and owners have spent time restoring the gardens to their former glory.
The garden consists of terraced lawns and beds around the house, a formal parterre hidden away, a woodland dell, a paddock that has been planted up with fruit trees and a soft fruit cage, and informal shrubs /trees /plantings leading down to 2 natural ponds at the far end. There are several shaped yew hedges and topiary as well as a greenhouse, large, raised beds for vegetables within a netted structure next to an oak barn that houses much of the equipment, and with a heated gardener’s loft above.
The historic gardens cover a wide spectrum from formal lawns and borders to woodland and an orchard, with varied and diverse plantings, specimen trees. Although the gardens are well established, the gardener will continue to renovate certain areas from time to time. There is a full range of gardening equipment available including a Kubota ride on mower, a Kubota Mid-sized tractor and associated implements, Kawasaki Mule and other relevant powered and non-powered machinery.
The successful applicant will have a high level of horticultural knowledge and the experience necessary to both maintain and develop the garden’s vibrancy. There are 3 part time gardeners who each work one day per week and the experienced gardener will manage them. The garden is set on a slope and the experienced gardener will need to be physically fit as well as comfortable with ladders as some of the hedges and topiary are quite tall. Spray certificates as well as chainsaw are desirable but not a requirement.

The Supervisor reports into the Production and Operations Manager and is responsible for assisting in the daily running of work schedules, to deliver safe and compliant services, to meet contractual specifications on time and with consideration to the budget (finance and budgeting being the responsibility of another post holder). This role involves managing Landscape Operatives and Team Leaders, ensuring landscaping is completed to the highest standards, co-ordinating the supply of equipment and materials and managing client relationships on site.
Responsibilities
Operations
-Ensure the company is adhering to, and exceeding, its Health and Safety objectives
-Focus on meeting daily production targets.
-Produce and distribute daily worksheets and brief the Team Leaders and Landscape Operatives on the tasks to be completed during the working day, answering any questions and addressing any issues raised.
-Work to maintain a motivated and disciplined team of Operatives by communicating and managing the individuals.
-Ensure resources are used efficiently and works are delivered within the agreed timeframes.
-Work with the Team Leaders and Yard Operative to ensure that all Landscape Operatives are fully equipped each day with the necessary tools, equipment and materials to complete required tasks.
-Undertake regular site visits to ensure that operations are carried out to the expected quality and timescales, and that site plans and instructions are followed. Identify any substandard work to be rectified and organise staff training to prevent reoccurrence.
-Ensure operatives’ time is managed effectively; at the beginning and end of each day.
Clients/Customers
-Where requested by The Production and Operations Manager conduct site audits, inspections and operational reviews with site managers/clients to ensure contract compliance and arrange for quotes to be made for any variation work discussed.
-Promptly respond to phone calls and emails, deal with any client/customer enquiries and complaints, effectively, manage any operational issues, and communicate all corrective actions back to the site managers, clients/customers within agreed timescales.
Compliance
-Follow systems and procedures for effective operations in a compliant manner, implementing company policy as appropriate
-Proactively take responsibility for Health and Safety matters relating to staff, sites, contracts and vehicles, equipment and machinery under the authority of the Production and Operations Manager.
-Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with the correct policies and procedures, and develop new working procedures, if required.
-Work with the post holder responsible for ensuring that all vehicles, equipment and machinery used to deliver the contracts are properly maintained. Make sure that general maintenance is carried out by the operatives in accordance with their weekly vehicle and machinery inspection sheets. Ensure that any damage/faults are effectively reported and any required actions arising from this are dealt with promptly.
-Ensure all vehicles are kept clean and tidy by operatives
Finance/Budget
-Check the quality of stock delivered during site visits and report any issues with supply and/or quality to the post holder responsible for placing orders/purchasing.
-Give due consideration to the budget when managing contracts to ensure profitability for the company.
Competency
-Ensure each Landscape Operative is trained and competent for the operations they will be undertaking and that they understand their responsibilities in relation to their role;
-Conduct regular Toolbox Talks with operatives to provide training and refresher sessions on operational best practice and the use of equipment, Health and Safety, environmental and quality priorities and updates on company news or any other developments.
-Praise excellent work and promote continued professional development, such as tractor, trailer towing or spraying courses, to keep staff motivated and upskill the workforce to meet the needs of the company.
